A New Sheriff In Town for Golf
Monday, April 13th, 2015 by WLOY Staff
“Well…I’m glad that wasn’t a dream.”
This was the tweet that 21-year-old Jordan Spieth sent out just hours after winning the 79th Masters. Actually, “winning” just doesn’t encapsulate exactly what Spieth did this weekend at Augusta National.
Spieth led wire-to-wire, set a new 36-hole scoring record for the most storied golf course in the United States, hit the most birdies in tournament history, and tied an all-time Masters scoring record. So, yeah, “winning” doesn’t quite cut it.
What he did win or earn was America’s attention.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the 21-year-old Spieth is finding success this early in his career. He’s got a near-flawless technique, he’s incredibly intelligent, he’s strong between the ears, and he has a respect for the game that extends far beyond his years.
Of course, comparisons are already being made to Tiger Woods, especially since Spieth is the youngest player to win the Masters since…well, Tiger in 1997. (more…)

Sports Saturdays: McClure Tennis Center To Open
Saturday, April 11th, 2015 by WLOY Staff
Loyola’s brand new tennis complex will be unveiled on Saturday at 11:30am, in time for the tennis teams to play Bucknell later in the day.
In a happy and well deserved twist, Loyola will be dedicating the new tennis center to the man who has been at the helm of the tennis program since 1979, and has earned over 700 wins during his tenure, Rick McClure.
The McClure Tennis Center is a stunning eight-court, lighted facility on the grounds of Ridley Athletic Complex. This new complex is only possible thanks to a generous, anonymous $3.2-million donation.
An opening reception will take place at 11:30am, and the dedication ceremony itself will start at 12:30pm. After the festivities end, the Hounds will play their first matches ever in the new complex when they play host to Bucknell.
All who attend are welcome to join McClure and the players in a post-match reception in the Class of 1968 Suite at Ridley.

The Birds Are Back In Town
Thursday, April 9th, 2015 by WLOY Staff
Get ready to hear some “O’s” screamed during the National Anthem for the first time this season.
The birds are back in town this Friday as the Baltimore Orioles head back to Camden Yards for their 2015 home opener against the Toronto Blue Jays.
For the first time in 17 years, the O’s head into a season as the defending AL East Champs. They finished last year’s regular season with a 96-66 record and made it all the way to the ALCS before being swept by the Kansas City Royals.
O’s fans will shake off the pain of how last season ended, and proudly welcome the birds back to Baltimore on Friday when Bud Norris will take the mound against Mark Buehrle. (more…)

A Final Four of Great Mentors
Friday, April 3rd, 2015 by WLOY Staff
The stage is set. It’s next stop: Indianapolis for Kentucky, Wisconsin, Duke, and Michigan State.
While these may be the Final Four teams, the true Final Four consists of four men who have proven themselves to be experts of their coaching craft for years. These greats are John Calipari, Bo Ryan, Mike Krzyzewski, and Tom Izzo.
Four men that have ascended to the top of college basketball, all using completely different styles, and all taking very different paths to get to this year’s Final Four.
Like Iron Man in The Avengers, let’s do a headcount, shall we? (more…)

Can Anyone Stop Kentucky?
Friday, March 27th, 2015 by WLOY Staff
They’re tenacious. They’re efficient. They’re on the hunt for perfection. This March Madness, no one is safe from…the Kentucky Wildcats!
*Insert maniacal laughter from John Calipari here*
All horror movie-style jokes aside, Kentucky has looked to be in a league all their own this basketball season. After advancing to the Elite 8 after a 78-39 beat down of West Virginia in which the Mountaineers never came close to even competing with the Wildcats, there has been one question on the minds of everyone watching college basketball.

Sports Saturdays: UAB Win Means Victory Beyond the Court
Saturday, March 21st, 2015 by WLOY Staff
The University of Alabama at Birmingham shocked the sports world on Thursday when they topped 3-seed Iowa State, 60-59, providing the first major upset of the 2015 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
According to brackets submitted on ESPN.com, more people picked ISU to go all the way to the Final Four than picked them to lose to 14-seed UAB in the first game.
The major upset win speaks for itself, and obviously it was an emotional win for the UAB players.
“For us, it was just huge,” UAB junior Robert Brown said. “We come here, not just to play games, but to actually make some noise and to win some games. To be able to do that and win for Birmingham, win for Coach [Jerod] Haase, it’s a great feeling.”
Brown led all scorers in the upset win with 21 points.
However, the win means so much more for UAB than just advancing. For them, it was a deep feeling of achievement and euphoria that this program, its students and its fan base desperately needed. (more…)

Loyola’s Herreweyers On Watch For Tewaaraton Award
Thursday, March 19th, 2015 by WLOY Staff
Loyola junior attackman, Zach Herreweyers, has officially been added to the watch list for the 2015 Tewaaraton Award.
The Tewaaraton Award annually goes to the top men’s lacrosse player in the country, and now two Greyhounds are on watch for it.
Herreweyers joins his fellow attackman, Nikko Pontrello, on watch for the prestigious award. Herreweyers currently sits at No. 3 in the country in terms of goals with 29, and at No. 5 in the country for goals per game with an average of 3.63 per game.
The junior from Ontario has recorded five hat tricks so far this season, and has been named the Corvias Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week twice.
Herreweyers, Pontrello and the Hounds will try to shake off a tough loss to Georgetown when they face Lafayette on the road this Saturday.
