Sports Saturdays: How Amazin’ Are The Mets?

Saturday, April 25th, 2015 by WLOY Staff

Sports SaturdayMeet the Mets!

Don’t look now, but the New York Mets seem to be back in their “Amazin'” form for the first time in ages.

As the Mets prepare to start the Subway Series against their Bronx rivals, the New York Yankees, they find themselves at the top of the MLB with a 13-3 record, while also riding the momentum of an 11-game win streak.

They’re finally in a position to take New York and all of the major leagues by storm, but just how Amazin’ are these Mets?

Just going by the numbers, you have to be impressed with this team. Their 11-game win streak is the longest they’ve been on since 1986, when they also started 2-3 before the streak started.

They also accomplished these win totals at the start of the season with a win streak in 1969.

The Mets won the World Series both of those years. (more…)

Saturday, November 15th, 2014 by WLOY Staff

278717-330-0 soc_u_showalter11_288x162The Balitmore Orioles can say they are home to the 2014 MLB Executive of the Year, and the 2014 AL Manager of the Year.

Dan Duquette, who is the executive vice president of baseball operations for the Orioles, was given the award on Monday after his leadership in the front office helped the O’s to their best season in 17 years.

Duquette won the award back in 1992 as well, when he was the general manager for the Montreal Expos.

Big signings and roster manipulation carried out by Duquette were crucial to the O’s success this season. Not only did Duquette manage to sign big names like Nelson Cruz and Andrew Miller, he was also able to find players that were disregarded by other teams, players he knew had loads of potential.

The Royals defended their home turf in game 6 to force a game 7 in the World Series, thanks to a 10-0 rout of the Giants.

Kansas City never game San Francisco a chance in game 6, as they put 7 runs on the board in the bottom of the 2nd inning, batting through the entire lineup.

Big World Series blowout wins aren’t new to the Royals. They won their only franchise championship in 1985 with an 11-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

O’s and Royals Sweep to Meet in ALCS

Monday, October 6th, 2014 by WLOY Staff

Managers_10514The two ALDS series were decided in clean sweeps, with the Baltimore Orioles topping the Detroit Tigers, and the Kansas City Royals shocking the Los Angeles Angels.

The sweeps were incredibly impressive on both sides, considering that the O’s beat the last 3 AL Cy Young winners in their 3 games, and the Royals were able to hold off the best offensive team in all of baseball.

Baltimore advances with home-field advantage for the ALCS as the AL East Champions, and Kansas City fights their way through Oakland and Los Angeles to advance as the AL Wild Card team.

Even though the O’s were the higher seed in their series, both the O’s and the Royals were the underdogs in their respective ALDS matchup.

Looking ahead to the ALCS between Baltimore and Kansas City, a couple of things stand out: (more…)
