St Paul & The Broken Bones Live 9/12/15

Paul Janeway of Saint Paul and the Broken Bones sauntered on stage in box-toed shoes almost more sparkly than the Rams Head lights. As he opened with the first song I knew that he wasn’t going to put on any ordinary old show, what with his incredible voice and an extremely talented band that compliments it.
Closing my eyes, I felt like I was transported back in time to the 60s when soul music was revolutionary. But instead of Otis Redding, opening my eyes I found Paul Janeway, who looks like just a normal guy—not someone you’d expect to have the extraordinarily powerful voice he does. Turns out he was once just that: a normal guy who worked as an Alabama bank teller. Lucky for us, he met current bassist Jesse Phillips (who Rachel interviews here!) in 2012 and together they embarked on a musical journey with the goal of making music that worked with Janeway’s smooth, soulful voice. Sweetlife Festival Day 2

We sent Phil and Brandon to Sweetlife Festival at Merriweather Post Pavilion to shoot some photos and check out some bands. It’s fair to say they enjoyed the shows, meeting and interviewing some great acts and enjoying a very cool festival. Say Anything / Modern Baseball Show Review

So to start off, I have been to more than a few concerts in more than a few places. I’ve been to several venues in Manhattan(NY), Montclair(NJ), Baltimore(MD), Homdel(NJ) and many other places. Most concerts run pretty similarly. A couple of small name bands open up for usually one or two headliners. More often than not, the smaller bands just happen to have less experience on stage, less variety and this leads to a bad opening set.
When I saw Say Anything, Modern Baseball, Cymbals Eat Guitars and Hardgirls at the Baltimore Soundstage this was not the case. I showed up at doors time, which is normally about an hour before the first band plays. I was passionately looking forward to screaming my head off for Modern Baseball and I did not get a chance to look at the opening bands. People filed in and got some drinks and bought some merch and then the opening band started playing. (more…)

Sweetlife 2015 Day 1

The 2015 Sweetlife Festival May 30/31, 2015 at Merriweather Post Pavilion was 2 days of fantastic music, eclectic foods, and a wonderful atmosphere. We hurled staffers Phil Dayao ’16 and Brandon Newby ’15 into the pit to see what happened. Armed with cameras, recorders and excitement, they hit the show… Brandon’s Day 1 report is below:
Lightshow
After dealing with some parking issues and retrieving our press passes, Phil and I headed to the Treehouse Stage to catch the first act of the day. Unfortunately, through all of this, we were only able to catch the very end of Lightshow’s set. What we were able to see surprised me though. After rounding the corner, I was surprised to hear a live band! More surprised due to the fact that being an up-and-coming hip-hop artist, it’s hard to form a band and have them play your music the way you want it; that usually comes after some time. With this live band and Lightshow’s natural charisma, he put on a great show. He commanded the stage and made everyone present acknowledge him and his set of skills that are sure to take him a long way. Check out our interview with Lightshow too!

Coldplay’s innovative, awesome interactive video

Hey guys. Long time no talk. Coming back to you all after being abroad a little bit early to rave about the new Coldplay music video; it’s just that awesome. This new video, for ‘Ink’ off Coldplay’s most recent album Ghost Stories, takes it’s viewers on an interactive journey following a man’s dream for love and happiness. About every ten seconds or so the viewer, player is given a choice or a path that will lead our main character toward a new horizon and will significantly change his fate and his chances at love. This incredible video, designed by Blind, offers about 300 different music videos in one with it’s many options for it’s character to fulfill. This type of video raises the bar in the world of music videos and gives the listeners so much more involvement in the music they love so much. It’s very engaging and adds an awesome new level to the experience of listening to good music. Innovations like these allow artists to bring their followers just a little bit deeper into their crazy worlds, and I am a fan.

Last Tuesday, Waka Flocka Flame and Riff Raff joined together to give one heck of a show for Baltimore. The concert was at the Baltimore Soundstage which was chock full of diverse fans and raging front rowers’. Coming into the show I was immensely skeptical of the show due the somewhat poor lyrical quality of the two artists. That being said, I could have never been more wrong in my life. (more…)

Review: Caribou – Our Love

Dan Snaith operates in subtleties. And he does it better than everyone else.
Arriving on the electronic scene in the late 90s, the Canadian-born composer turned the so-called IDM (intelligent dance music) movement on its head. This is his game—take what exists, tear it up, make it better. Snaith is permanently evolving and reinventing himself. While guised under the various stage names of Manitoba, Daphni and Caribou he has done everything from shoegaze to krautrock and back again. No matter the name, the project is the always the same for Snaith: to produce fully developed, deconstructed soundscapes to dance to.

Buckle up! MF DOOM is back, accompanied by his new prodigy the 18-year old New York native, Bishop Nehru! So, sit back ladies and gents’ and enjoy the raw lyricism of the young rapper Bishop Nehru alongside the musical and lyrical genius of MF Doom. That being said do not expect the album to be chock full of Doom verses, however the few songs, which he is on, are more than fire, and Bishop Nehru is growing into a prospective great with his performance.
