The band Daughter, gained notoriety from their single, “Youth”. Their sophomore album, Not to disappear picks up right where the previous album lefts up. Though keeping with their “indie folk” mixed with similar sounds to bands like Warpaint, Phantogram and the artist “Ben Howard”. Creating an atmosphere, a world all their own, Daughters, gives its listener an array of melodies, colorful imagery, and Elena Tonrah’s voice is the glue that combines everything together creating the energy of Daughter. It may be hard to believe but, Little King has been around for quite sometime, having formed in November of 1996. OD1 is one of the latest band released by the trio. The EP is a nod to classic roc, livened up with melodic guitar riffs; with a sound similar to Guns N’ Roses, Aerosmith, and many classic rock greats, the group seems to have missed the mark on this particular album. The vibe of the album is eclectic, with an overarching feeling of uplift, new beginnings, youth and of course, love. Paper Ships musically, gives of a variety of genres, such as a rocky vibe akin to Paul McCartney and the Beatles, simple bar music, and even instances of folk, ragtime/jazz and blues. (more…)

Hailing from Boston, Massachusett, Nathaniel Bellows releases his first EP The Old Illusions, is definitely quite an album to be introduced to him by. The musician, visual artist and writer has music akin to folk stars, Mumford and Sons and Hudson Taylor. The Old Illusions is simply a man and his guitar; combining Bellows’ haunting voice akin (again) to the baritone base of Marcus Mumford, and his introspective, and colorful lyrics aid in the immense quality of this record. Stephanie Berlanga’s The way things go, is definitely a step in the right direction for this vocal powerhouse. Described, by many as playing “acoustic pop music” Berlanga’s EP definitely shows off her wide range and powerful vocals, the production on the album is amazing especially for someone who is an up and coming artist. The album gives a small insight into what Berlanga can do; she mixes various different genres, including some country, pop, acoustic, and some alternative rock. (more…)

Welcome Back Free Show with NEMES 1/21

Welcome back to campus from WLOY and Late Night Loyola! Our first FREE CONCERT of the semester will be 8-10pm in McGuire Hall, Thursday January 21st featuring NEMES from Boston! How good are they? How about: “One of the top 5 unsigned bands in the country” -Alternative Press.
Nemes (pronounced knee•miss) has made their mark on the Boston and larger New England music scene by playing everywhere from subway stations to highly-revered rock venues. Led by duel-frontmen Dave Anthony and Josh Knowles, the band showcases a true metamorphosis of sound, featuring warm, layered harmonies and one-of-a-kind violin shredding Vanyaland describes as “fiddle-action glory.” These components are delicately layered across captivating original songs to form what Under the Gun Review calls “some of the most engaging music we’ve heard,” garnering shout-outs from national and international acts such as Alt-J and Nirvana.
Released in the fall of 2015, their debut studio full-length album, “I Carry Your Heart,” has lifted the band from the subway stations of Boston to larger stages around the region, performing as support for acts such as X Ambassadors and Guster. The album was co-produced and mixed by Rick Kwan (Jim James, My Morning Jacket) and funded by a combination of busking, gigging, and crowd-funding. The 11-track record is an exploration of four minds working to create a resonant, cathartic listening experience.

Psycho Killers Interview

Ryan Porter, the bassist from Psycho Killers (a Baltimore Talking Heads cover band), took some time with Kat and Rae to talk about their founding, upcoming Black Friday show and just how exactly they ended up with Thomas Dolby (yes, the “She Blinded Me With Science” guy) asking to join them on stage for a show. The band performed it’s second annual fundraising event at Baltimore Soundstage to gather donations for Toys For Tots the day after Thanksgiving. This year there was the bonus of Thomas Dolby sitting in!

Allen Stone and Bernhoft

Kat and I had the absolute pleasure of seeing not only Allen Stone, but also the very talented Bernhoft on November 11th at the Baltimore Soundstage. It is definitely in my Top 3 concerts of all time. Their energy filled the entire room from top to bottom, no corner was left untouched by Allen’s good vibes. The two were a perfect pairing and complimented each other so well.
In addition to getting to see these two, we were also graced with the presence of Allen’s amazing band! They brought the party with them, and spread it out to the crowd! The extremely packed Soundstage was vibin’ and groovin’ in harmony to both Bernhoft and Allen Stone. It was one of those rare, magical concert experiences where everything is just as it should be. I will never forget the way this concert made me feel. There is nothing better than feeling the bass in your chest, standing in the middle of a crowd of fellow fans, all singing along together. It reminds you you are alive and that it’s amazing to be alive.
If you haven’t seen Allen Stone and/or Bernhoft perform, they both deserve to be on your “Must-See” list. If you can catch them together on this tour, or the next one (because insider’s note: they’re best friends now), definitely do it! If only to see Bernhoft come out during Allen’s song “Million” and steal the mic and join in with the band! Actually, scratch that, if only to see Allen’s horns players shaking their hips like they’ve never lied a day in their life, in perfect synchronization. It’s truly a sight to behold.
Anyway you slice it, this concert was a religious experience that took me to a place of peace and happiness I haven’t been to in a while.

Late Night: Jah Works 11/12

WLOY + Caribbean Students Union = Jah Works
WLOY and the Caribbean Students Union (CSU) will be joining forces to bring you an awesome late night event from 7pm to 10pm on November 12th in McGuire Hall. CSU will be starting things off with a cultural event including delicious food, such as fried plantains and jerk chicken. There will be poets, music, dancers and both fun and knowledgeable activities. From 9pm to 10pm Jah Works, a great Baltimore-based reggae band, will be performing a great show for everyone! Jah Works has traveled the world performing for more than 20 years and 9 albums. We’re excited that some of the band members are alumni of Loyola who met during study abroad in the 90s! They write and perform original reggae music! Jah Works are a high energy band that appeals to music listeners of all genres! Come out on Thursday to hear a great show and enjoy a great cultural event!
