Sports Saturdays: How Amazin’ Are The Mets?
Saturday, April 25th, 2015 by WLOY Staff
Don’t look now, but the New York Mets seem to be back in their “Amazin'” form for the first time in ages.
As the Mets prepare to start the Subway Series against their Bronx rivals, the New York Yankees, they find themselves at the top of the MLB with a 13-3 record, while also riding the momentum of an 11-game win streak.
They’re finally in a position to take New York and all of the major leagues by storm, but just how Amazin’ are these Mets?
Just going by the numbers, you have to be impressed with this team. Their 11-game win streak is the longest they’ve been on since 1986, when they also started 2-3 before the streak started.
They also accomplished these win totals at the start of the season with a win streak in 1969.
The Mets won the World Series both of those years. (more…)

Sports Saturdays: McClure Tennis Center To Open
Saturday, April 11th, 2015 by WLOY Staff
Loyola’s brand new tennis complex will be unveiled on Saturday at 11:30am, in time for the tennis teams to play Bucknell later in the day.
In a happy and well deserved twist, Loyola will be dedicating the new tennis center to the man who has been at the helm of the tennis program since 1979, and has earned over 700 wins during his tenure, Rick McClure.
The McClure Tennis Center is a stunning eight-court, lighted facility on the grounds of Ridley Athletic Complex. This new complex is only possible thanks to a generous, anonymous $3.2-million donation.
An opening reception will take place at 11:30am, and the dedication ceremony itself will start at 12:30pm. After the festivities end, the Hounds will play their first matches ever in the new complex when they play host to Bucknell.
All who attend are welcome to join McClure and the players in a post-match reception in the Class of 1968 Suite at Ridley.

Sports Saturdays: UAB Win Means Victory Beyond the Court
Saturday, March 21st, 2015 by WLOY Staff
The University of Alabama at Birmingham shocked the sports world on Thursday when they topped 3-seed Iowa State, 60-59, providing the first major upset of the 2015 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
According to brackets submitted on ESPN.com, more people picked ISU to go all the way to the Final Four than picked them to lose to 14-seed UAB in the first game.
The major upset win speaks for itself, and obviously it was an emotional win for the UAB players.
“For us, it was just huge,” UAB junior Robert Brown said. “We come here, not just to play games, but to actually make some noise and to win some games. To be able to do that and win for Birmingham, win for Coach [Jerod] Haase, it’s a great feeling.”
Brown led all scorers in the upset win with 21 points.
However, the win means so much more for UAB than just advancing. For them, it was a deep feeling of achievement and euphoria that this program, its students and its fan base desperately needed. (more…)

Sports Saturdays: Patriot League Play Starts
Saturday, March 14th, 2015 by WLOY Staff
WHAT: Loyola Women’s Lacrosse vs. Lafayette
WHEN: Saturday, March 14th, 1pm
WHERE: Ridley Athletic Complex
The Loyola Women’s Lacrosse shocked the college lacrosse world by upsetting No. 8 UVA on their home turf. The Hounds pulled off the overtime upset thanks to a heroic effort from senior Hannah Schmitt, who scored 3 goals in OT, making Loyola Superfans go, “Holy Schmitt!”
Loyola looks to carry that strong momentum back home on Saturday as they host the Lafayette Leopards to kick off their conference schedule.
The Hounds come into the game with a 2-4 record, having played in very close games thus far this season. This will be the Greyhounds’ second season in the Patriot League.
In their first Patriot League season, they went 8-0 in conference play, and beat the Leopards 22-12.
Come on out to Ridley this Saturday to cheer on the Hounds as they begin league play!

Sports Saturdays: Dude, Where’s My Racecar?
Saturday, February 28th, 2015 by WLOY Staff
NASCAR just turned into an Ashton Kutcher comedy down in Morrow, Georgia as Team Xtreme Racing driver Travis Kvapil is left saying, “Dude, where’s my car?”
Kvapil’s No. 44 car was in a trailer in a hotel parking lot in Morrow, Georgia in preparation for this weekend’s race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. At 5:34am, the trailer, with the car and spare parts inside, was stolen.
Team Xtreme now finds themselves without a car for the race this weekend, and had to withdraw from the race Friday morning.
Kvapil reported the theft through Twitter while keeping a good sense of humor about him.
“Wow. Anyone near Atlanta find my stolen Cup car let me know! Unreal,” Kvapil first tweeted at 9:13am. (more…)

Bringing Football Back To LA?
Monday, February 23rd, 2015 by WLOY Staff
After an announcement on Thursday from the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders, we learned that there are three NFL teams considering the move to Hollywood from their current cities.
These three teams are the St. Louis Rams (which we already knew about), the Oakland Raiders (which we assumed), and the San Diego Chargers.
The Rams began pursuing a plan to possibly move to LA a little over a month back, but the Raiders and Chargers just sprung this on the NFL world.
Chargers fans and the people of the great city of San Diego are shocked and slightly betrayed by this news, especially since San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer created a task force with the sole purpose of finding ways to keep the Chargers in San Diego. (more…)

Sports Saturdays: Love the Hounds this Valentine’s Day
Saturday, February 14th, 2015 by WLOY Staff
WHAT: Loyola Men’s Lax vs. Penn State; Loyola Women’s Basketball vs. Boston University
WHEN: Saturday, February 14th, 12:00pm; 2:00pm
WHERE: Ridley Athletic Complex; Reitz Arena
This Valentine’s Day, spend some time with your one true love…the Loyola Greyhounds!
The Hounds will be on display first at noon, when the men’s lacrosse team will take on 17th ranked Penn State, then at 2pm when the women’s basketball team will play against Boston University.
Loyola men’s lacrosse opened their season last week with a tough 13-12 loss at home against no. 9 Virginia. They now have the chance to right the ship against Penn State in the two teams’ 52nd overall meeting. Sending a little love the Hounds’ way for the game surely can’t hurt.
The women’s basketball team was right in the middle of the pack in the Patriot League before going on the four-game losing streak they’re on now. However, the Hounds round out their season with five more conference games, three of which are at home. Almost all of their remaining games are against teams that reside in the the lower half of the Patriot League standings. Be sweet and spread hearts all around for the Hounds at 2pm.
Show your love for the green and grey this Valentine’s Day, and be the Hounds’ valentine!
