AOTW: MIRANDA AND THE BEAT – Miranda and The Beat
June 9th, 2023 by Liz Kosik
by Liz Kosik ’25
Album of the Week: MIRANDA AND THE BEAT – Miranda and The Beat
Released: May 26, 2023
Rate: 9/10
RIYL: Artic Monkeys, Ravonettes, The Kills, Jacuzzi Boys, King Khan
Make way.. Miranda and The Beat are hot and ready to reignite the New York City rock music scene. They happily disregard the limitations of staying within one genre, ranging from punk, garage, and soul. While Miranda and The Beat can technically be classified as rock, they have no problem pushing the bounds of each genre while adding their individual, fresh taste. Arriving in the Big Apple in 2018, Miranda and The Beat have brought a new energy, collabing with rock idols such as The Mystery Lights and Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. They’re, for sure, expected to succeed their current reputation and break the bounds of their anticipated fame. Read the rest of this entry »

Alumni Spotlight: Brandon Newby (2015)
June 6th, 2023 by Liz Kosik
Brandon Newby (2015) discusses their experience at the WLOY radio station. Newby shares his favorite memories as an aspiring artist and the station’s impact on his career path.
Q: Can you tell us about your show at WLOY? (name and theme, genre of music)
A: “What Cats Listen To” lmao, I don’t remember the time because we had several different time slots over the years. It started as a Pop-Punk show, but as a Hip-Hop fan, I would slide a random song in a block. It eventually became a multi-genre show. We didn’t go into it with a theme, we just wanted to hang out and play music.
Q: Who is your favorite artist now?
A: I have way too many to name, but Kid Cudi will always be a go-to. And Conway The Machine is probably my current favorite. His new album “Won’t He Do It” is a masterclass in rhyme structure and flow. Read the rest of this entry »
