Tourism Tuesday: The Carroll Mansion and Phoenix Shot Tower Tours

Experience 200 years of history by participating in a guided tour of The Carroll Mansion and Phoenix Shot Tower. Every Saturday and Sunday, from Noon-4pm, visitors can learn about two iconic Baltimore landmarks in Jonestown, the city’s most historic neighborhood with origins dating back to 1661. The Carroll Mansion holds historic relevance in the city as it has served many roles, from being the home of Charles Carroll (an early advocate for freedom from Great Britain) to a vocational school and recreation center, in its 200 year existence. Similarly, the Shot Tower holds major significance for the city as it served as our nation’s largest building from its conception until 1846 at 215 feet. For many years, the tower served significance as it annually made over 2 million pounds of “drop” shot, used for small game hunting. The towers current exhibit includes a sound and light show, and a video on the production of shot. Admission is $5 for adults; $4 for children, seniors 65 and up, students, and military; and free for children 6 and under. Groups of 10 or more can also make reservations for tours outside of the regular business hours. So, grab your friends and family and head down to The Carroll Mansion and Phoenix Shot Tower to learn about some Baltimore History!

Museum Mondays: A Very Visionary Star-Spangled Sidewalk

American Visionary Art Museum – 800 Key Highway
Showing through September 2014, with ongoing installation throughout Summer 2013, The American Visionary Art Museum is excited to present A Very Visionary Star-Spanlged Sidewalk. This exhibit is described as a “free outdoor art celebration” in conjunction with the Maryland’s “Star Spangled 200” Bicentennial. The sidewalks along Key Highway, surrounding The American Visionary Art Museum, will be turned into a line by line artistic depiction of our Nation’s Anthem, and will be applied using environmentally safe pigments and sealant. The American Visionary Art Museum hopes visitors and passers-by alike will literally “stand and take part” in Maryland’s rich history. The historically linked exhibit is also meant to compliment the museum’s current thematic exhibit The Art of Storytelling: Lies, Enchantment, Humor, and Truth as the elements of Francis Scott Key’s account of the British attack on Fort McHenry in 1814 expresses the exhibits theme of personal testimony. The exhibit is completely free and open to the public so head down to step into history!

Sports Saturdays: Tour de Frederick

The Fourth Annual Tour de Frederick will be held Friday, August 16th to Sunday, August 18th, with registration beginning at 11am on Friday at the Hilton Garden Inn of Frederick. This yearly event, which welcomes cycling enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels, features unique routes that display the beauty of Frederick County, while showcasing its rich history. This tradition hopes to bring together all types of cyclists while fostering competition and camaraderie. Not only is this event fun for all, but it also supports the Boys and Girls Club of Frederick County. Attendees can partake in various types of courses, including a history bike tour of Frederick City, a 30-mile ride that encompasses all three covered bridges in Frederick County, and an 8-mile family ride. Plus, guests who purchase the three-day package can partake in complimentary beer tastings, a ghost tour of Frederick, and a “High Wheel Race” that features restored antique bicycles. You can register online or at the event. Prices range from $15 to $160 depending on the level of participation you anticipate.

Breakfast with the Animals has quickly become one of the Maryland Zoo’s most popular events this year. This experience, which is perfect for the whole family, allows guests get up close and personal with their favorite animals and the keepers who care for them! This experience is one of a kind featuring meals next to exhibits, special keeper chats, education stations, unlimited photo opportunities, and great takeaway gifts for all to remember this early morning experience. Some specific days in the series include Breakfast in Africa, Breakfast with the Chimps, and Breakfast with the Penguins. Tickets are also good for general admission to the Zoo following the morning activities. The price is $65 for general admission and free for children 2 and under. This event promises to be a fun time for the whole family!

Theater Thursdays: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead

The Jewish Theater Workshop is proud to present Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead by Tom Stoppard from August 8th to August 18th. Acclaimed as a modern masterpiece, this play is the tale of Hamlet creatively told from the view of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, two minor characters from Shakespeare’s original play. In this modern twist on a Shakespeare classic, the two titular characters finally get to take the lead role in a convoluted world where reality and illusion intermix, and eventually meet a tragic but inevitable demise. The production will be shown Thursday August 8th at 7pm, Sunday August 11th at 1pm, Tuesday August 13th at 7pm, Thursday August 15th at 7pm, and Sunday August 18th at 1pm; so there are quite a few dates for all to choose from. General admission tickets are $15 and $10 for Students and Seniors.

Wacky Wednesdays: Waterfront Wellness

The Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore Inc. serves as “our Harbor’s chief advocate, promoter, and steward.” This coalition seeks to create programs that will keep Baltimore’s historic Inner Harbor and it’s people healthy and beautiful. The Waterfront Wellness Series will be offering free wellness classes every Saturday and Sunday through September 29th at the West Shore Park! These classes are suitable for people of all skill levels and are taught by local professionals in the wellness industry. On Saturdays, you can participate in Boot Camp at 8:30 am and Zumba at 9:30 am. On Sundays, Yoga is offered at 8:30 am while CrossFit is offered at 9:30 am. Please bring your own mat, towel, and bottle of water for each class. Also, in the event of rain, all classes will be canceled. The series is also restricted to people age 18 and above.

Tourism Tuesdays: Gunpowder Falls State Park

One of Maryland’s largest and most unique state parks is right under our noses, here at WLOY, and a visit to it will surely fill any person with peace of mind. Established in 1959 to protect the Gunpowder River, Gunpowder Falls State Park is now comprised of over 18,000 acres in Harford and Baltimore counties. The park features more than 120 miles of hiking trails, for the most novice to most experienced hikers; a swimming beach; a marina; and streams for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. Plus, a favorite summer activity of many is to just grab an inner tube and float down the river. Could you think of a more perfect way to cool off? The park is pet friendly so an outing here can turn into an endeavor for the whole family! Want to explore the great outdoors without going too far from the city, then head over to Gunpowder Falls State Park!

Museum Mondays: Maryland Lottery – 40 Years / 40 Stories

The Baltimore Museum of Industries newest exhibit showcases the Maryland State Lottery’s important economic and social role in the 40 years since its conception. Spanning four decades, these artifacts and items will include images of early winners, contests and drawings, print and television ads, campaigns and slogans. Promotional materials and items from past to present will also be on display, along with an old drawing machine, prize wheel, giveaway items and an array of scratch-offs and games.
Visitors to the museum will learn many surprising and interesting facts about the Lottery’s history-from the controversial legislative process that took place to establish the Lottery more than 40 years ago to the complex processes that must occur daily behind the scenes of drawings today. The weekly lottery is certainly more than just picking numbers and visitors will see that from this exhibit. Ticket prices are $12 for adults, $9 for Seniors 62+, $7 for youth and students, and free for children 6 and under.
