ASG: What’s The Point of All The Points?
Monday, February 16th, 2015 by WLOY Staff
In last night’s 2015 NBA All-Star Game from Madison Square Garden, the Western Conference All-Stars defeated the Eastern Conference All-Stars in a respectably low-scoring 163-158 contest. This was the highest scoring ASG in NBA history.
Oklahoma City Thunder star Russell Westbrook received the ASG MVP award for his 41-point effort for the West, just one point shy of tying the all-time ASG record set by Wilt Chamberlin of 42 points.
This game featured everything from 3-pointers to dunks to more dunks to a rare appearance on the court from Carmelo Anthony (a tease for Knicks fans everywhere). The game has absolutely no meaning and purpose other than good fun through an offensive showcase. Nobody really cares to see any sort of defense or meaning in a game, right? (more…)

Sports Saturdays: Love the Hounds this Valentine’s Day
Saturday, February 14th, 2015 by WLOY Staff
WHAT: Loyola Men’s Lax vs. Penn State; Loyola Women’s Basketball vs. Boston University
WHEN: Saturday, February 14th, 12:00pm; 2:00pm
WHERE: Ridley Athletic Complex; Reitz Arena
This Valentine’s Day, spend some time with your one true love…the Loyola Greyhounds!
The Hounds will be on display first at noon, when the men’s lacrosse team will take on 17th ranked Penn State, then at 2pm when the women’s basketball team will play against Boston University.
Loyola men’s lacrosse opened their season last week with a tough 13-12 loss at home against no. 9 Virginia. They now have the chance to right the ship against Penn State in the two teams’ 52nd overall meeting. Sending a little love the Hounds’ way for the game surely can’t hurt.
The women’s basketball team was right in the middle of the pack in the Patriot League before going on the four-game losing streak they’re on now. However, the Hounds round out their season with five more conference games, three of which are at home. Almost all of their remaining games are against teams that reside in the the lower half of the Patriot League standings. Be sweet and spread hearts all around for the Hounds at 2pm.
Show your love for the green and grey this Valentine’s Day, and be the Hounds’ valentine!

Loyola Routs Lafayette in Patriot League Matchup
Thursday, February 12th, 2015 by WLOY Staff
In a dominating effort on both sides of the court, Loyola cruised to a 62-43 win over Patriot League opponent Lafayette on Wednesday night at Reitz Arena.
Tyler Hubbard and Franz Rassman led the scoring for the Hounds, but the real story was the suffocating team defense from the Hounds.
The Greyhounds started the second half strong, going on a 14-0 early in the half, extending their lead to 28. At one point in the game, the Hounds led the Leopards by 30 points. (more…)

How The West Was Won…Possibly
Monday, February 9th, 2015 by WLOY Staff
The NBA has been buzzing after Commissioner Adam Silver’s comments regarding the possibility of an adjusted playoff system. It’s looking like adjustment might be necessary seeing as some great Western Conference teams and players may miss the playoffs.
In the Western Conference, there are five teams that are separated by less than eight games, and two of those teams will not get to make the playoffs even though they are all above a .500 record. Whereas in the Eastern Conference, the seven and eight-seed teams are both at least seven games below the .500 mark.
Currently, New Orleans and MVP candidate Anthony Davis, and Oklahoma City sit on the outside looking in. That could very easily change with the Clippers losing Blake Griffin for an indefinite amount of time due to elbow surgery to treat a staph infection. (more…)

CFB Playoff Report: Year One
Monday, December 8th, 2014 by WLOY Staff
We are officially one year in to the new college football playoff system with its new committee, and one thing is very clear…clarity is much needed!
Going into the final week of the college football regular season, the rankings had 10-1 TCU at number 3, 12-0 Florida State at number 4, 11-1 Ohio State at number 5, and 10-1 Baylor at number 6.
All 5 teams won their last game of the season, however the kicker in this whole situation is that TCU and Baylor’s final games didn’t include a conference championship game due to the fact that it doesn’t exist in the BIG 12.
The final rankings completely shafted the BIG 12 Conference, as TCU and Baylor were bumped back to the 6 and 5 spot respectively, leaving them on the outside looking in to number 3 Florida State and number 4 Ohio State. (more…)

UAB Cans Football Program
Wednesday, December 3rd, 2014 by WLOY Staff
The University of Alabama at Birmingham has officially made the decision to pull the plug on their football program, citing financial reasons.
This decision was made after UAB had a consulting firm do a campus-wide study over the past year to determine whether or not keeping a football program was fiscally responsible.
In a statement from the University, UAB explains, “From an operating budget standpoint alone, the difference between maintaining and eliminating football is more than $27 million over the next five years; this is in addition to the existing $100 million institutional subsidy.” The University went on to explain, “This investment does not include additional necessary capital improvements for facilities, which is estimated at $22 million for football facilities alone, including a field house, indoor practice facility and a turf field. This $22 million investment would not include an on-campus stadium.”
University President Ray Watts defended the decision, saying, “While this will be a challenging transition for the UAB family, the financial picture made our decision very clear. We will not cut the current athletic budget, but in order to invest at least another $49 million to keep football over the next five years, we would have to redirect funds away from other critical areas of importance like education, research, patient care or student services.”
Needless to say, the students and student-atheletes don’t see it the same way as Watts.

Johnny Manziel Comes In For Browns
Monday, December 1st, 2014 by WLOY Staff
The Cleveland Browns may have just lit the fuse on the Johnny Manziel era, and there may be no snuffing it out.
In the 4th quarter of the Browns game against the Buffalo Bills, with Cleveland down 20-3, Head Coach Mike Pettine made the move to bring in Manziel in place of a struggling Brian Hoyer.
Manziel came in and immediately led the Browns 80 yards down the field, capping off the drive with a 10-yard touchdown run. Of course, Manziel showed his Money Manziel celebration after scoring his first NFL regular season touchdown.
In the end, the effort wasn’t enough as the Browns fell to the Bills in Buffalo, 26-10. However, the in-game decision to bring in Manziel does create a quarterback controversy.
