One of the many unexpectedly unforgettable free concerts of the Rochester International Jazz Festival 

To some, standing shoulder to shoulder in a rambunctious crowd of Rochesterians on an 85-degree night might seem unpleasant, but as I scanned the crowd, I couldn’t find a single soul that wasn’t enjoying the concert. Mingo Fishtrap was kicking off the third night of the Rochester International Jazz Festival in an unforgettable manner. It was hard to imagine cars ever driving on Gibbs Street because the music lovers had claimed the road as their own.  Strangers quickly became dancing partners and friends as Mingo Fishtrap’s soulful funky sound assertively boogied its way through the crowd. The husband and wife duo, “Thus Owls” recently released their album Turning Rocks. Though Thus Owls consist of other people in the band, it is mostly centered around Erika and Simon Angell. Turning Rocks relies on heavy drum beats, synths and distortion in an effort to make you feel like you are traveling to another world. Matt Koelsch & The Allies’s sophomore album Epic Summer is just delightful. Each song on the album has an attitude of its own, clearly portraying the amazing writing skills of Matt Koelsch. Deleted Scene’s new album, set to release April 15 definitely captures the essence of their music-art rock. Melodic rhythms, infused with some math rock, helps set this band apart from others. This album definitely demonstrates are much this band has grown, how mature they are and how knowledge/talented they are on their instruments. California rocker, Night Riots self-funded this amazing EP. Young Lore is just 6 songs of absolute fun-it combines, harmonic vocals, solid drumming and simple yet amazing guitar riffs. The saying, “simple is better” really defines these indie rocker, though each song is clearly thought out, none of the songs are over produced instrumental wise. (more…)
