Welcome Back Free Show with NEMES 1/21

Thursday, January 7th, 2016 by The Professor

Nemes-Promo-Grid Welcome back to campus from WLOY and Late Night Loyola! Our first FREE CONCERT of the semester will be 8-10pm in McGuire Hall, Thursday January 21st featuring NEMES from Boston! How good are they? How about: “One of the top 5 unsigned bands in the country” -Alternative Press.

Nemes (pronounced knee•miss) has made their mark on the Boston and larger New England music scene by playing everywhere from subway stations to highly-revered rock venues. Led by duel-frontmen Dave Anthony and Josh Knowles, the band showcases a true metamorphosis of sound, featuring warm, layered harmonies and one-of-a-kind violin shredding Vanyaland describes as “fiddle-action glory.” These components are delicately layered across captivating original songs to form what Under the Gun Review calls “some of the most engaging music we’ve heard,” garnering shout-outs from national and international acts such as Alt-J and Nirvana.

Released in the fall of 2015, their debut studio full-length album, “I Carry Your Heart,” has lifted the band from the subway stations of Boston to larger stages around the region, performing as support for acts such as X Ambassadors and Guster. The album was co-produced and mixed by Rick Kwan (Jim James, My Morning Jacket) and funded by a combination of busking, gigging, and crowd-funding. The 11-track record is an exploration of four minds working to create a resonant, cathartic listening experience.

Fight Hunger!

Monday, November 23rd, 2015 by WLOY Staff

fight hungerLets all #fighthunger!

With the holiday and cold weather quickly approaching it is important that we take the time to think of others who are less fortunate. Fight Hunger is a national campaign aimed to aide in providing food for those who are in dire need. It is an excellent and creative campaign! The idea is to film one big fight sequence from Austin to Philadelphia. What a cool way to promote such an important cause! By the way, one of those stops is Baltimore! Check out their go fund me page here, and donate! They are also accepting canned goods! So raid your cupboards or hit the grocery store and then drop it all off at the WLOY station by December 14th! We are looking forward to seeing a huge pile! They also accept clothing!

The Debate of the Decade

Saturday, November 14th, 2015 by WLOY Staff

Sports SaturdayShould college athletes get paid?

It is such a simple question, but the answer is a lot more complex then yes or no.

Paying college athletes is an extremely complicated scenario because there are so many sports, schools, and conferences that distributing the money equally would be a nightmare.

However, I think that the resolution to this matter is fairly simple.

College athletics is a business and it comes down to which sports make the most amount of money for the NCAA.

Who is the Best of the Best?

Saturday, October 24th, 2015 by WLOY Staff

Sports SaturdayFor the first time since 1970, 5 NFL teams will be undefeated entering week 7. The Bengals, Broncos, Packers, Panthers, and Patriots are the lone remaining teams without a loss and all 5 of them have a legitimate chance of raising the Lombardi Trophy come February.

We know what Andy Dalton and company can do during the regular season, but the real question for the Bengals is, can they get the job done during the post-season? Dalton has made the playoffs in each of his first 4 years in the league however, he is 0-4 in the post-season. This is a different Bengals team. They are incredibly balanced on offense with a thunder and lightning rushing attack with Jeremy Hill and Giovani Bernard, as well as a prolific passing attack featuring A.J Green. With the exception of the Ravens game, Green has been relatively quiet so far this season. It is the emergence of guys like Tyler Eifert and Marvin Jones that have really added another dimension to this offense. Eifert specifically has been extremely effective in the red zone hauling in 6 touchdowns leading all tight ends. This Bengals team certainly has the weapons to keep up with the elite teams in the AFC. (more…)

Thursday, October 22nd, 2015 by WLOY Staff

MoveAlong

The All- American Rejects album “Move Along” was an album that gave the group honorable popularity. Their pop album topped the charts leading with their singles “Dirty Little Secret”, “Move Along”, and “It Ends Tonight”. Their album touched on the topics of cheating on your significant other and also how when you are faced with tough situations in your life you have to face them and “Move along”.

The album started off with the lead singer finding out that his girlfriend has a “Dirty Little Secret”. He soon finds out that his girlfriends’ secret is that she is cheating on him but he is so in love with her that he offers to look past her cheating because he wants them to stay together. The album has a nice flow to it, with the lead singer finding out his girlfriend is cheating leading to the singer move on with his life. But at the end of the album the singer goes back to his girlfriend begging for her to come back. (more…)
