Join WLOY in Feeding the Homeless

Wednesday, August 2nd, 2017 by The Professor

It’s that time of year again! Our annual BBQ for the homeless and needy in Baltimore is coming up August 5th. In past years we have fed more than 1,000 people at the BBQ and this year it’s looking just as big. Join us and more than 30 partner organizations as we grill and serve, distribute clothing and toiletries and entertain our great guests. St. Vincent de Paul church has once again donated their lovely park space for this year and we’ve got Shorty (Shorty’s Bootleg BBQ) bringing his big tow grill to add to the cooking power. You can donate in advance, or show up on Saturday to drop off items. We’ll be there setting up at 9am and food service starts at 11. We usually run until 3-4pm or we run out of thousands of hamburgers and hot dogs. It’s a great cause and it will change your life to see the true need in Baltimore. Join WLOY alumni and current staff for a fun day of service! More info is available on the Facebook Event page.

Mobile Listening and WLOY

Monday, July 24th, 2017 by The Professor

A lot of people ask how they can listen to WLOY with the least clicks. Downloading a mobile app is by far the easiest one and our new RadioFX app is the best solution going. Not only do you get to listen to our great stream, but there is a DJ chat function, our show schedules are there with an easy scroll and search, DJ bios, Polls, all our social media, and more! Bonus: IT’S FREE. If, for some reason, you don’t want to install this amazing app (which includes access to other college radio stations from around the country – not that you need them, we’re just saying they’re there as an extra) there are 2 others that offer great sounds from us.

RADIOFX for iOS users or for Android users
Includes DJ chat, social media, program schedule and more, no ads

AS OF 2022 RADIOFLAG HAS CEASED OPERATION

TUNEIN Radio for iOS users or for Android users
Just listening, no station interaction, commercials added by app (not US!)

Earth People! The Triumphant Return of Dr. Octagon

Monday, June 26th, 2017 by The Professor

by Earl Crown, host of Crucial Cuts on WLOY

On June 4th 2017, Kool Keith (aka Dr. Octagon) came to Baltimore Soundstage with his hip-hop super-group, and reminded us why we loved Dr. Octagon in the first place. His 1996 album, [itunes link=”https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/1977/id310121423?i=310121516&uo=4″ title=”Dr. Octagonecologyst” text=”Dr. Octagonecologyst”], is considered by many to be among the most important albums of that decade and a must-own LP for any serious fan of the genre. With the help of producer and DJ Dan “The Automator” Nakamura, as well as world-class turntablist DJ Qbert, Octagon was able recreate the genius of his groundbreaking 1996 album on stage.

The Dr. Octagon tour features an all-star stage band, with a live drummer and bass player, along with two DJs, the aforementioned Dan the Automator and DJ Qbert. The set list for the Baltimore Soundstage show included many tracks from the Dr. Octagonecologyst album, including “[itunes link=”https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/3000/id310121423?i=310121435&uo=4″ title=”3000″ text=”3000″]”, “[itunes link=”https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/earth-people/id310121423?i=310121448&uo=4″ title=”Earth People” text=”Earth People”]” and “[itunes link=”https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/bear-witness/id310121423?i=310121476&uo=4″ title=”Bear Witness” text=”Bear Witness”]”. The appreciative crowd got especially wild for “[itunes link=”https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/blue-flowers/id310121423?i=310121467&uo=4″ title=”Blue Flowers” text=”Blue Flowers”],” a fan-favorite from the 1996 release. As many of you have heard the Karoondinha Music and Arts Festival has been cancelled. We are sorry for any of you who were disappointed by this news, and we would never want to let down our listeners. Lucky for us, the Deep Roots Mountain Revival Festival has been generous enough to give us two three-day passes, and camping to one lucky WLOY listener–as well as, honoring those who already purchased passes to Karoondinha with passes to their festival.

The festival will be July 20th to the 22nd (conveniently the same as Karoondinha), and is located at Marvin’s Mountaintop in Masontown, West Virginia. Deep Roots Mountain Revival will have an Americana, Bluegrass, Rock and Jam feel to it– featuring bands such as Dr. Dog, Brandi Carlile, Lettuce, JJ Grey & Mofro, Moon Taxi, and many more. Like Karoondinha, Deep Roots wants to encourage festival-goers to relax and connect not only to the music, but nature and themselves. They will be offering activities such as meditation, yoga, sound-healing, and more. Enter with the link below for a chance to win.

Fill out my online form.
Online contact and registration forms from Wufoo.

Pretty Don amazing: Don Broco Live

Thursday, May 11th, 2017 by WLOY Staff

The British rock band, [itunes link=”https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/don-broco/id307317604?uo=4″ title=”Don Broco” text=”Don Broco”], has been around since 2008, but have just embarked on their first US tour. Aside from having the pleasure of interviewing the band, I had the opportunity of seeing them live at Baltimore Soundstage.

Anyone who knows Baltimore, knows that the music fans of the city are very hard to please, especially the pop punk scene, who have seen acts like Modern Baseball, All Time Low and many more jump off to headlining acts at major festivals and their own tours. And to be honest, Don Broco is definitely the odd ball out when looking at the bill. They are lined up with bands like: With Confidence, Against the Current and State Champs. Fortunately, there were a few fans there, but Don Broco definitely had a challenge ahead of them. (more…)
