Vote WLOY & Christmas Parade 10Best!!!

Wednesday, November 8th, 2017 by The Professor

Isn’t this amazing?! USA Today is trying to pick the 10 Best Holiday Parades in the country and one of the initial 20 they picked was the Mayor’s Annual Christmas Parade in Hampden!! It’s been going for 44 years (with only 1 shut down for snow) and WLOY has been a part of the parade for the last 8 years. We build a float on and around the station van and send our crew of WLOY elves out with bags of candy canes, shirts, and toys for kids along the route. With over 20,000 people on the street sides it’s no wonder we gave out over 3500 candy canes last year!!! When we found out that the parade was in the top 20 for this competition, we were excited to support it and tell you to vote. When we saw the featured picture seen by millions on the USA Today 10Best website was of THE WLOY FLOAT well… we kinda lost our minds. That’s Hillary Bowman ’14 up there throwing stuffed plush snowballs to the crowd on top of the WLOY van and inside the Merry Christmas Hon float. WOW! So, what can you do, other than just admire the fame we are now finding for Hillary? YOU can vote. And vote again. Right up until the day after the parade you can vote and repeat, and repeat… GO TO THIS LINKhttp://bit.ly/Vote4Baltimore – Share it with your friends and family, your coworkers, your pets, anyone that can click a link and vote. Vote often. THANKS!

Wednesday, November 8th, 2017 by The Professor

This Thursday night marks the return of the amazing PLRLS to McGuire Hall. With a blend of punk, new wave, and a bit of sass, they’ll keep you jumping all show. From “Rose Garden” to “Look at the Nerds” there’s a bit of Talking Heads, a bit of Devo, a dash of Joe Jackson and some pop punk thrown in. As a bonus we’ll also have the great classic garage rock sounds of The Hall Monitors to keep you moving for another hour! The Hall Monitors bring us straight up fuzzed out classic 60s garage rock sounds. Everything they play should be on a slightly scratchy 45rpm 7″ record in every jukebox. Check out “She’s My Methodone” on their Bandcamp page for a sample of their style.

Check out the newest album from PLRLS on their website, or the single “Oh What a World” (aka “Worldstar”) below. And don’t forget to join us in McGuire Hall from 8-10pm on Thursday November 9th!

Ladies Night at the FAC – Live Music!

Wednesday, November 1st, 2017 by The Professor

JaniceB

WLOY, The FAC and The Women’s Center present Ladies Night at the FAC. Among the many amazing things will be 2 great performances by JaniceB and Gina DeLuca. JaniceB was excellent last year and Gina is a great addition to this year’s lineup. Games, prizes, classes and more will be available from 9:30 – 11:00pm in the FAC for female students. Come on down and have some fun, get in a quick workout and enjoy some great free live music!

JaniceB’s music is her own style which she calls “Eclectic Soul”. Whether it’s R & B, jazz, blues, rock, country, or house music it is soulful. Last year’s performance at Ladies Night was a hit, so here she is again! Check out more on her website.

Gina DeLuca

Gina DeLuca is currently performing over 600 songs from her ever-expanding list, variety is inevitable and encouraged. While the majority of her songs are covers, Gina brings a warmth and soulfulness to each song that makes them, in some ways, her very own. More info on her website!

Rocky Horror Picture Show On The Quad! 10/26 8pm

Wednesday, October 25th, 2017 by WLOY Staff

WLOY will be presenting Rocky Horror Picture Show once again! Come to the Quad (or McGuire Hall if the weather is bad) and be transported into this strange, but energizing movie. The movie is so crazy that imdb.com could not provide more of an summary than “a couple has a breakdown in an isolated area.” And if you ever been alone with someone for an extended amount of time, you know exactly how wild things can get. The production is meant to be a satire on both science fiction and horror movies, which yields an unexplainable combination as gender play and madness take their toll. There are no words that can do this production justice and for that reason I suggest you come check it out for yourself. We’ll be giving the event the WLOY touch and be offering giveaways to the best costumes! So stop by the Quad on Thursday from 8-10pm.  If you know the movie, or want to pretend you did all along, feel free to come in costume and act along, or read up on the audience responses. Participation is highly encouraged!

Friday, October 6th, 2017 by The Professor

The amazing multi-instrumental Skribe returns to the Coffeehouse Thursday October 12 from 8-10pm. Whether he’s playing a perfectly normal guitar or his homemade gas can turned “canjo zookie”, Aaron will make you stop in your tracks and listen. Check out some of their tunes and videos here.

They’ve been to Coffeehouse in the past and every time it’s fun to watch passerby freeze up and listen. They’re that kind of good. Come on down, grab a coffee and chill with Skribe on Thursday. Maybe you’ll get lucky and snag one of their rare green vinyl pressings and find out why so many area bands love his songwriting.
