AOTW – Phoneboy
Tuesday, July 19th, 2022 by The Professor
ALBUM OF THE WEEK by Ben Ostrowski ’24
Phoneboy released a self-titled album as their first full-length project in 2021 and they absolutely killed it. A place where the toe-tapping grooves of pop meet the relatable lyrics of indie rock. The band describes a “phoneboy” as someone who is too sucked into their phone that they don’t pay attention to the world happening around them. On the contrary however, “Phoneboy,” from the New Jersey trio is guaranteed to get you off your phone and you’ll probably wind up rocking your socks off as a result.
Firstly, the vocals on this album are immaculately descriptive and give you a clear feeling for what the song is meant to be about. A song like “Fomo” that’s bursting with melodies and ramped-up choruses while exploring the madness of everyday anxieties. The guitar riffs are just as entrancing. From the intro and various riffs in the Weezer-inspired “Sweater Song” to the acoustics of ending track “Lately,” there is no sound not heard on this record. (more…)

Bonham-Bullick Band Interview (TVC)
Thursday, July 14th, 2022 by The Professor
Daniel Jones, host of The Volcano Chronicles Wednesdays 7-9pm (Eastern and Hawaiian) sat down with Deborah Bonham and Peter Bullick of the Bonham-Bullick Band to talk about their new self-titled album, life on the road, famous relatives and doing it on your own. You may recognize her name from her lesser known sibling John. Rumor had it he played drums in some band once upon a time…
Deborah’s strong vocals have put her in the front of huge audiences with a ton of classic rock artists and Peter’s guitar work led to a world tour with Paul Rodgers (Free, Bad Company, The Firm, Queen…).

Zepparella Interview (TVC)
Tuesday, July 12th, 2022 by The Professor
Daniel Jones, host of The Volcano Chronicles (Wednedays 7-9pm EST and HST) sat down for a chat with the amazing Clementine, drummer and founder of the all-female Led Zeppelin tribute band Zepparella. They explored a lot of aspects of music, talent and managing a band as well as the life of a tribute band that does things a little differently. Clementine has a lot of thump as a drummer and trying to replicate the sounds of John Bonham is no small task! A great chat and a fantastic band. Definitely check them out after giving this one a listen! And check out their musical coaching channels for some cool insights.

Battle of the Bands 2022 Winner
Friday, April 22nd, 2022 by Ronnie Gruseck
After a thrilling Tuesday evening following Easter break, with more than 150 students crowding into McGuire Hall, a winner was finally chosen to open Loyolapalooza on May 1st!
Three bands (Panic! in the Fine Arts Department, Folding chairS, and Crown Me King) each competed in fifteen-minute segments, after which area music producers, musicians and radio programmers served as judges and provided their own take on each performance. With booming instruments and a lively crowd throughout the contest, McGuire Hall was jumping with competition and strong energy.
Congratulations to Crown Me King who won the judges vote. The performances were so good that we decided to pick not one, but two winners to perform at Loyolapalooza, where Folding chairS won the audience vote by a slim margin of less than a handful of votes. Folding chairS will perform earlier in the day at Loyolapalooza, along with the 3 winners from Songwriter Skirmish.
WLOY congratulates Crown Me King on winning Battle of the Bands and opening for Two Friends at Loyolapalooza on May 1st!

DJ Mike the Psych, now green-thumbed alumna Mike Vuoto, has a (possibly unhealthy) thing for Peter Frampton’s album Frampton Comes Alive, and it’s led him to some cool stuff. Among the things it has led to are some great seats at shows and several great chats with Frampton’s longtime manager Donnie Lewis. Here is the one when they finally did it as an official interview!
