November 20th, 2015 by WLOY Staff

GranoPastaBar What: Grano Pasta Bar

Where: 1031 W 36th St., Baltimore

When: Monday-Saturday 11:30am – 10pm, Sundays 12pm – 9pm

I am no stranger to Grano Pasta Bar, in fact, I love the pasta bar. Its intimate setting is a great place for you to get your favorite pasta with your best friends. At Grano, you pick your favorite pasta and favorite sauce and whatever else suits your fancy. I am personally the biggest fan of Gnocchi with Vodka Sauce, simple I know, but absolutely delicious! Their vodka sauce is to die for! They have plenty of options from farfalle to penne and all the sauces your heart desires. Along with bread and many other options, maybe a cannoli or three after dinner? Then you are set for a great evening with great food! Don’t have time to sit down? That’s cool just do take-out, I promise it is just as good!

Check out their facebook page! Grano Facebook page!

Wacky Wednesday: The Pink Flamingo

November 18th, 2015 by WLOY Staff

cafehon What: Cafe Hon’s Pink Flamingo

Where:1002 W 36th Street, Baltimore

When: Monday- Thursday 11am-9pm, Friday 11am-10pm, Saturday 9am-10pm, Sunday 9am-8pm

What is wackier than a HUGE pink flamingo on top of a restaurant? I don’t know about you, but I don’t think I can come up with anything else!
Café Hon hosts the HUGE pink flamingo! It’s a delicious café and popular spot in the town of Hampden. Café Hon boasts out-there wigs and great food. Denise Whiting opened it in 1992, but our favorite flamingo wasn’t introduced until 2002. Unfortunately, in 2009 our big guy went into “hibernation” for a little but he came back better than ever in fiberglass form! Café Hon has also been featured on a popular Food Network show!
Stop by, get some great food and take a million pictures of this wild flamingo!

Loyola Radio Celebrates 40th Anniversary!

November 17th, 2015 by WLOY Staff

wlcr2 This Thursday marks a momentous occasion, with the 40th anniversary of Loyola Radio’s founding! Loyola radio started on a happy day, November 19, 1975 originally under the call letters WVLC (The Voice of Loyola College). It was founded by John Franklin- ’76 grad, and Jay Guyther- grad of ’78. We then became WLCR (Loyola College Radio) until 2002 when we became your favorite radio station, WLOY!

In order to celebrate 40 incredible years, this Saturday from 1-5pm we will be having alumni from the 70’s to present, stop by to speak with us about where they are now and what it was like “back in the day.” We will have a live show with some of the alumni telling us some funny stories of their days in the station. The current staff will be giving tours of the station and giving updates on what we have been up to lately, and some funny stories of our own. There will be food, of course! It will be a great day filled with some celebration and stories!

So let’s give a big happy birthday to Loyola Radio!

Allen Stone and Bernhoft

November 17th, 2015 by WLOY Staff

bandKat and I had the absolute pleasure of seeing not only Allen Stone, but also the very talented Bernhoft on November 11th at the Baltimore Soundstage. It is definitely in my Top 3 concerts of all time. Their energy filled the entire room from top to bottom, no corner was left untouched by Allen’s good vibes. The two were a perfect pairing and complimented each other so well.

In addition to getting to see these two, we were also graced with the presence of Allen’s amazing band! They brought the party with them, and spread it out to the crowd! The extremely packed Soundstage was vibin’ and groovin’ in harmony to both Bernhoft and Allen Stone. It was one of those rare, magical concert experiences where everything is just as it should be. I will never forget the way this concert made me feel. There is nothing better than feeling the bass in your chest, standing in the middle of a crowd of fellow fans, all singing along together. It reminds you you are alive and that it’s amazing to be alive.
Alphonso If you haven’t seen Allen Stone and/or Bernhoft perform, they both deserve to be on your “Must-See” list. If you can catch them together on this tour, or the next one (because insider’s note: they’re best friends now), definitely do it! If only to see Bernhoft come out during Allen’s song “Million” and steal the mic and join in with the band! Actually, scratch that, if only to see Allen’s horns players shaking their hips like they’ve never lied a day in their life, in perfect synchronization. It’s truly a sight to behold.

Anyway you slice it, this concert was a religious experience that took me to a place of peace and happiness I haven’t been to in a while.

The Debate of the Decade

November 14th, 2015 by WLOY Staff

Sports SaturdayShould college athletes get paid?

It is such a simple question, but the answer is a lot more complex then yes or no.

Paying college athletes is an extremely complicated scenario because there are so many sports, schools, and conferences that distributing the money equally would be a nightmare.

However, I think that the resolution to this matter is fairly simple.

College athletics is a business and it comes down to which sports make the most amount of money for the NCAA.
