The beautiful gardens and historical grounds are a wonderful place to go explore or maybe on a picnic. They have lots of events coming up this fall, including a Halloween event with a costume parade and a pumpkin carving contest!

Attention all runners! Here is your chance to run a full marathon, half marathon, 5K or relay race for a cause. The Baltimore Running Festival will be hosting these runs for their 13th consecutive year in hopes of bringing the community together. Many big name charities are offering training and opportunities to donate; a full list is available on their website. All of the races will finish at Camden Yards at M&T Bank Stadium. Are Teams Expecting Too Much, Too Fast Now?

The Cincinnati Reds have now made a playoff appearance in back-to-back seasons and have been consistently relevant in the world of baseball for the first time in almost twenty years. Dusty Baker joined the organization as the General Manager in 2007 and quickly turned the decimated Reds team around in order to make them a threat in the National League again. This past weekend, he brought the Reds to a single-elimination wild-card playoff game in which they had a chance to get to the NLDS.
The Reds unfortunately lost to the Pirates in the game, but this sounds like a promising scenario for the future, right? Well apparently the Reds organization didn’t seem to think so! Just 3 days after the playoff loss and multiple successful season, the Reds parted ways with Dusty Baker, dismissing him after three 90-win seasons, and two straight playoff appearances.
The Reds had a bad last week of the season, losing six straight, including the playoff loss to the Pirates, but is that all that is needed to fire a coach now? This seems to be a new trend happening in sports, which is leaving teams in flux due to a constant changing of the guard.
Former Auburn Tigers head coach, Gene Chizik, led the Tigers to a National Championship in 2011, but was then fired after the 2012 season where the Tigers went 3-9.
This emerging trend begs the question, are teams now expecting too much too fast from their head coaches? Improving and developing a team takes time; it doesn’t happen overnight. Do you think many of the coaches we consider to be the best of all time started out with immediate success? Of course not.
Legendary Dallas Cowboys coach, Tom Landry, led the Cowboys to a stellar 16-46-4 record in his first 5 seasons as head coach before winning 2 Super Bowls with the team. Former Yankees Manager, Joe Torre, began his career in New York with the nickname, “Clueless Joe.” After a couple of years with the team, he finally delivered some success, which quickly became 4 World Series titles.
This new trend of immediate gratification is a big departure from the traditional ways of sports, and seems to prevent any sort of connection or development. So is this new trend good for sports? You decide.

Word on the Street Art Auction October 12

Join the members and supporters of the Word on the Street newspaper at the annual Art Auction Fundraiser on Saturday October 12th in Baltimore. WLOY has been a proud co-founder and supporter of this great project (and won a few national awards for it too) and we want to spread the news. Artists from all over the country have donated their works to support the auction. Photography, paintings, drawings, sculpture, and much more will be lining the walls for your bidding. Government Shutdown Effecting…Sports?

I know it sounds like a joke, but this is more than serious. The recent partial government shutdown due to a budget impasse in Congress has now officially infected the world of sports.
The shutdown has caused the sports programs at the service academies (Army, Navy, Air Force) to be temporarily suspended. As a result of the temporary program suspension, the three teams are in jeopardy of having to skip their games for this upcoming weekend, leaving two games at risk of being abandoned.
The first game at risk of falling victim to the shutdown is Army vs. Boston College. Boston College has been in contact with Army athletics in an attempt to find some sort of means of making the game happen, but so far to no avail.
The second game at risk of being cancelled has a little bit more riding on it. This Saturday, Navy and Air Force were set to play their annual rivalry game that has been a tradition between the two academies since 1972, with the rivalry itself dating back to 1960. The game is one in a series of games between the academies that determines the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy, which is an annual trophy given to the service academy with the best record against one another.
I know that you could very easily say, “So what? It’s just a trophy.” This is true, but the revenue those games pull in is very real. The Navy vs. Air Force game for Saturday has already sold out, presenting a couple of major problems!
It’s still not a definite yet that these games will be cancelled, but let’s just say that the chances of those games actually happening are looking like a resounding slim-to-none right now.
