Wacky Wednesdays: I Am: A Night of Monologues

July 3rd, 2013 by WLOY Staff

NOMFriday, July 12th at 5:30PM

YES Drop In Center – 2315 N. Charles Street

The Faces of Homelessness Bureau presents I Am: A Night of Monologues. This unique cultural event will feature stories, spoken word poetry, prose, and heartfelt anecdotes about the impact of prejudice on our communities and the power of the human spirit to overcome unimaginable odds. Held at the Youth Empowered Society Drop In Center, a place created for youth between ages 14 and 25 who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of experiencing homelessness, this event promises to be compelling and interesting. These dialogues are told from the perspective of both the person who has experienced or is experiencing homelessness and the local speaker who advocates for the rights of the man or woman experiencing homelessness. This event seeks to challenge us to see beyond conventional stereotypes that pull us apart and to recognize the humanity that lies within every individual, regardless of their situation. There is no fee, per se; however, a donation of $10 is suggested at the door.

RSVP by calling 443-531-1919 or emailing facesofhomelessnessbmore@gmail.com

Museum Mondays: Site Unseen – Gregory Vershbow

July 1st, 2013 by WLOY Staff

SiteUnseenSaturday July 6th

The Walters Art Museum – 600 N. Charles Street

Site Unseen promises to be a unique and exciting exhibit that will begin showing at The Walters Art Museum on July 6th. While museums frequently have beautiful and elaborate exhibits displayed for patrons to view in awe, many people neglect to realize that behind closed doors is a treasure of works coming and going. Gregory Vershbow’s upcoming exhibit, that will consist of several enlarged photographs, seeks to capture the beauty of various pieces as they’re presented shrouded in plastic, protected in foam, nestled in boxes, and uniquely juxtaposed among other works. The exhibit will feature not only images from the Walters, but also from museums both in the United States and internationally. This exhibit will surely force you to question your perception of various works in their original setting as well as speculate alternative meanings to the works when presented with other pieces.

The museum is open from 10 AM to 5 PM Wednesday to Sunday. General admission to the museum is free.

For more information, visit The Walters Art Museum’s website.

Food Fridays: Common Ground Cafe

June 28th, 2013 by WLOY Staff

commongroundHours: Monday – Sunday from 7AM to 5PM

The Avenue – 816 W. 36th Street

Now, I might be killed by fellow WLOY staffer, Nicki Doster, for sharing this secret cafe heaven, but everyone should check out Common Ground Cafe in Hampden. I recently discovered this cafe, cozily situated on the Ave while in Hampden for HonFest and immediately fell in love with it. With bagels, pastries, and other goodies made fresh daily, Common Ground is the perfect breakfast heaven. All products are made with fresh and high quality ingredients, and the cafe offers many gluten free, vegetarian, and vegan options. On top of all that, they create their own spin on everyone’s favorite candy bars and often get a little quirky when mixing up muffins (the other day I had a peanut butter, banana, and Captain Crunch muffin). Perhaps my favorite part is the eclectic collection of delicious, New York style bagels. To top everything off, the cafe also displays works of many local artists and advertises them for sale! Common Ground Cafe is the perfect getaway for delicious food and great art!

For more information and a menu, check out Common Ground Cafe’s website.
