Government Shutdown Effecting…Sports?

Tuesday, October 1st, 2013 by WLOY Staff

I know it sounds like a joke, but this is more than serious. The recent partial government shutdown due to a budget impasse in Congress has now officially infected the world of sports.

The shutdown has caused the sports programs at the service academies (Army, Navy, Air Force) to be temporarily suspended. As a result of the temporary program suspension, the three teams are in jeopardy of having to skip their games for this upcoming weekend, leaving two games at risk of being abandoned.

The first game at risk of falling victim to the shutdown is Army vs. Boston College. Boston College has been in contact with Army athletics in an attempt to find some sort of means of making the game happen, but so far to no avail.

The second game at risk of being cancelled has a little bit more riding on it. This Saturday, Navy and Air Force were set to play their annual rivalry game that has been a tradition between the two academies since 1972, with the rivalry itself dating back to 1960. The game is one in a series of games between the academies that determines the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy, which is an annual trophy given to the service academy with the best record against one another.

I know that you could very easily say, “So what? It’s just a trophy.” This is true, but the revenue those games pull in is very real. The Navy vs. Air Force game for Saturday has already sold out, presenting a couple of major problems!

It’s still not a definite yet that these games will be cancelled, but let’s just say that the chances of those games actually happening are looking like a resounding slim-to-none right now.

A Farewell to Rivera

Friday, September 27th, 2013 by WLOY Staff

There are some moments in the world of sports that make us remember why we love them so much. Whether it’s Ripken breaking the record in Camden Yards in 1995 or just a parent sharing the love of a sport with their kids, we tend to fall in love with sports over and over again. Last night in the Bronx was certainly one of those moments that made us fall in love with the world of sports again. (more…)

RadioEdu Week 01 & 02: Introduction

Friday, September 27th, 2013 by WLOY Staff

Hello everyone! I’m excited to announce the birth of RadioEdu, a project designed to introduce audio engineering and production to Baltimore City students. This blog will follow the progress of three extraordinary fifth graders from Eutaw-Marshburn Elementary School as they learn complex concepts on industry standard studio equipment. The students have limited access to computers, and we are working together two days a week. Each week will focus on one or more concepts and will have a ‘proof of concept’ project from the students. The emphasis is on project-based learning, and the students develop their skills through hands-on development and gain more autonomy as the semester progresses.

We hope that this pilot project is the first of many and that we are able to introduce this technology and skillset to many more schools and students in the future!

Danity Kane’s Dawn Richard Interviews with A Double Dose of Entertainment

Wednesday, September 25th, 2013 by WLOY Staff

Written By: Joelle Hernandez
Dawn-Richard-Danity-Kane-ReunionSo, who remembers Danity Kane? The smoking hot girl group from the MTV hit reality show Making the Band with Hip-Hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs. The group hit stardom at the speed of light back in 2005 and then came crashing down abruptly in 2009—with all of the highs and lows in between being broadcast to the nation each week on MTV.  The group was made up of five females– Dawn Richard, Aubrey O’Day, Aundrea Fimbres, Wanita “D.Woods” Woodgett and Shannon Bex–  who fought their way to fame against dozens of other girls hoping for the spotlight. Four years on the top of the iTunes and Billboard Charts proved that the spotlight can be difficult to handle. In a heated episode of MTB Season 3, the members of Danity Kane went their separate ways. After about four years apart, the ladies of Danity Kane are back together and are better than ever! The 20/20 Experience 2 of 2

Wednesday, September 25th, 2013 by WLOY Staff

Justin-Timberlake-The-20_20-Experience-2-of-2-2013-1200x1200 It seems like 2013 has been the year of Justin Timberlake. With The 20/20 Experience hitting the top of every music chart ever created, The Legends of Summer Tour with Jay-Z selling out arenas across the country, and let’s not forget that killer VMA performance,

JT is unstoppable. But, just when you thought that was enough, he has released the highly anticipated 20/20 Experience 2 of 2. This album is very reminiscent of his NSYNC days. His “pop” foundation shines through in every song; including the slower ones like Amnesia. The heavy background vocals also contributes to the boy-band sound on this album. In true JT fashion, the album has only 11 tracks with only one song less than four minutes long. The last track “Not a Bad Thing” is 11 minutes and 28 seconds long. Justin Timberlake’s voice is just as smooth and incredible on this album as on any other album he has created in the past. The newlywed seems to still be using his marriage to actress Jessica Biel as inspiration with the love songs on this album. JT is, however, getting in touch with his inner bad boy with the language on this album. There are more expletives on this album than fans are used to hearing from America’s Prince of Pop. After listening to this album, there is no doubt that JT is hotter than ever! Tune in to A Double Dose of Entertainment on Fridays from 7-9pm to hear tracks from this album!
