What’s Wrong With Eli?

Eli Manning is a two-time Super Bowl MVP, with two rings under his belt and the title of leader of the comeback kids that are the New York Giants. But as his brother Peyton is looking like he’s going to have a record-breaking season at quarterback, Eli is also breaking records, just not the kind you’d want to break.
Through the first six weeks of the NFL season, Eli has led the Giants to a dismal 0-6 record, the Giants’ worst start since 1976 when the team started the season 0-9. There are a lot of pieces that factor into the poor play of the Giants this year, but Eli has to be at the top of the list.

Concepts: Conducting Interviews, Project Planning for Interviews
Continuing on last week’s lesson, we decided that the best way to become comfortable conducting and giving an interview is to practice! Since last week focused on creating questions beforehand and conducting an interview with scripted questions, I put the students on the spot and had them conduct completely improvised interviews.
Wednesday morning we discussed different questions that would be good to ask during an interview, and how the interviewer needs to write questions that are appropriate for the interviewee. For example, we came up with questions that would be good to ask a fellow student and then examined how questions for a teacher or parent interview would differ. As practice, I had the students draft five questions to ask each other in mock interviews, and then they took turns conducting interviews. This was excellent practice for being on both ends of the interview.
In the afternoon session, M’s interview skills had already greatly progressed and she was confident enough to interview Mrs. Jackson, her music teacher. Prior to the interview we discussed the pros and cons of pre-written questions versus improvised content, and that many radio interviews are conducted with a mixture of both approaches. She then drafted a series of appropriate ‘guide questions’ for a teacher interview, and was able to conduct the interview with Mrs. Jackson, who was able to provide excellent pointers for questions for future interviews.

NFL Invading Europe?

It seems that the NFL is attempting to invade our brothers from across the pond. Since Roger Goodell became Commissioner of the NFL in 2006, he has pushed heavily to involve Europe in the NFL. Since 2007, there has been an annual game in London between two NFL teams in the regular season. This year it was bumped up to two games in London, and now the NFL has agreed to play three games at Wembley Stadium in London next season.
The three home teams have already been determined as the Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons, and Oakland Raiders for these three games next season. (more…)

Are Teams Expecting Too Much, Too Fast Now?

The Cincinnati Reds have now made a playoff appearance in back-to-back seasons and have been consistently relevant in the world of baseball for the first time in almost twenty years. Dusty Baker joined the organization as the General Manager in 2007 and quickly turned the decimated Reds team around in order to make them a threat in the National League again. This past weekend, he brought the Reds to a single-elimination wild-card playoff game in which they had a chance to get to the NLDS.
The Reds unfortunately lost to the Pirates in the game, but this sounds like a promising scenario for the future, right? Well apparently the Reds organization didn’t seem to think so! Just 3 days after the playoff loss and multiple successful season, the Reds parted ways with Dusty Baker, dismissing him after three 90-win seasons, and two straight playoff appearances.
The Reds had a bad last week of the season, losing six straight, including the playoff loss to the Pirates, but is that all that is needed to fire a coach now? This seems to be a new trend happening in sports, which is leaving teams in flux due to a constant changing of the guard.
Former Auburn Tigers head coach, Gene Chizik, led the Tigers to a National Championship in 2011, but was then fired after the 2012 season where the Tigers went 3-9.
This emerging trend begs the question, are teams now expecting too much too fast from their head coaches? Improving and developing a team takes time; it doesn’t happen overnight. Do you think many of the coaches we consider to be the best of all time started out with immediate success? Of course not.
Legendary Dallas Cowboys coach, Tom Landry, led the Cowboys to a stellar 16-46-4 record in his first 5 seasons as head coach before winning 2 Super Bowls with the team. Former Yankees Manager, Joe Torre, began his career in New York with the nickname, “Clueless Joe.” After a couple of years with the team, he finally delivered some success, which quickly became 4 World Series titles.
This new trend of immediate gratification is a big departure from the traditional ways of sports, and seems to prevent any sort of connection or development. So is this new trend good for sports? You decide.

Government Shutdown Effecting…Sports?

I know it sounds like a joke, but this is more than serious. The recent partial government shutdown due to a budget impasse in Congress has now officially infected the world of sports.
The shutdown has caused the sports programs at the service academies (Army, Navy, Air Force) to be temporarily suspended. As a result of the temporary program suspension, the three teams are in jeopardy of having to skip their games for this upcoming weekend, leaving two games at risk of being abandoned.
The first game at risk of falling victim to the shutdown is Army vs. Boston College. Boston College has been in contact with Army athletics in an attempt to find some sort of means of making the game happen, but so far to no avail.
The second game at risk of being cancelled has a little bit more riding on it. This Saturday, Navy and Air Force were set to play their annual rivalry game that has been a tradition between the two academies since 1972, with the rivalry itself dating back to 1960. The game is one in a series of games between the academies that determines the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy, which is an annual trophy given to the service academy with the best record against one another.
I know that you could very easily say, “So what? It’s just a trophy.” This is true, but the revenue those games pull in is very real. The Navy vs. Air Force game for Saturday has already sold out, presenting a couple of major problems!
It’s still not a definite yet that these games will be cancelled, but let’s just say that the chances of those games actually happening are looking like a resounding slim-to-none right now.
