WLOY Welcomes 2022 NSEMC to Baltimore

Monday, October 24th, 2022 by The Professor

WLOY is honored and thrilled to welcome the 2022 National Student Electronic Media Convention to Baltimore! After years of the conference roving around the country and just missing us, we finally captured it for 2020 and then… ugh. Thankfully we are hosting it live and in person for 2022! We welcome hundreds of college radio and TV students and advisors to Charm City October 26-29th. We’re doing our best to be great ambassadors for Baltimore with a 20 minute welcome to Charm City video created by Ben Ostrowski ’24 and voice by him and Hope Johnson ’23. We’ve roped in great local music from Skribe and James Von Lenz and arranged tours of M & T Bank Stadium and WBAL Radio/TV and more fun things. How about bringing a special edition of the Baltimore Record Bazaar into the hotel to let students from all over the country do a little crate digging! We’ll be sharing as much Baltimore as we can with our guests and linking videos and other info. As a bonus, we have 9 amazing WLOY alumni coming back to share their experiences in radio, TV, film, PR, digital content and entertainment law 🙂

See below for the video exploring things to do in Baltimore and links to everything mentioned! (more…)

Vakili Band Interview (2022)

Wednesday, October 12th, 2022 by The Professor

Wooo! We are BACK! In studio with the Vakili Band during a stop on their way to their show in DC at The Runaway tonight. Ben Ostrowski ’24 hung out with the full band for our first in studio band visit since the dreaded closure of 2020… So glad to start having bands back in and they were a great one. The whole band hung and talked process, their new Walking Sideways album, recording vs live versions, and how well Gordon packs the van. A lot of fun and a great way to get back into live interviews. Can’t wait for them to come back in the spring for a show in Baltimore. Meanwhile check out their new album and listen to the interview in case you missed it live.

Charlie Musselwhite Interview (TVC)

Saturday, August 6th, 2022 by The Professor

Charlie Musselwhite Album Cover The Volcano Chronicles Host Daniel Jones sat down with the incredible, legendary blues harmonica player Charlie Musselwhite to talk about his new album and amazing career playing with virtually every major blues musician.

Moving from Mississippi to Chicago along with thousands of others chasing factory jobs, he wound up immersed in the musical scene of the south side of town. Its hard to overstate Charlie’s influence on the revival of Chicago Blues in the 1960’s and his ongoing influence on players today. A great time was had by all 🙂

Explore Baltimore! Now&Then

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2022 by Ronnie Gruseck

What: Music store

When: Wednesday-Sunday, 10 am-6 pm

Where: 5308 East Dr, Halethorpe, MD 21227

Reviewed By: Amelia Dunat

Now&Then has everything you could ever want and more. A friendly atmosphere, a knowledgeable owner, an interesting inventory, and access to all music genres and paraphernalia. CDs, tapes, guitars, musical electronics, DVDs, magazines, and pieces of vinyl are just some of the items that you can find here. Not to mention the Lps, record players, cassettes, 8 tracks, and movies you can find here… Seeing all the varying items feels like a flea market.

This business deserves everyone’s support- once you visit you will understand how enjoyable this store makes digging through such a massive amount of music. The employees will let you know of any running sales promotions, so you’ll have the opportunity to save some money, but everything is fairly reasonably priced to begin with. My only warning is that the place is almost overflowing with inventory, so be prepared to do a lot of digging and give yourself some time to thoroughly look through everything that interests you.

Explore Baltimore! Graffiti Alley

Sunday, May 1st, 2022 by Ronnie Gruseck

Reviewed by: Amelia Dunat

Graffiti Alley is an L-shaped alley located between North Howard Street and 19 1/2 Street. It’s the only legal space in Baltimore where graffiti artists can create freely. This secret alley is a safe space for all local artists, where they can express their creative thoughts via spray paint on a wall with no limits (the nearby trash cans and pipes are also covered with art). My favorite thing about this place is that the art is never the same, and therefore it continuously attracts locals and tourists which supports the artists. The only rule in this “gallery” is to treat all of the artists’ work with respect. You might even see one of the artists at work!

Every so often the art-covered walls get painted over to create a fresh canvas and the process of covering it with art begins again. This space also promotes local street artists as it might connect them to and spark interest in future buyers, or commissioners. I definitely recommend visiting this alley on a warm spring day- you won’t be disappointed and even if you’ve been here before you’re sure to see a new work of art.
