Quarantine Takeover – Bobby & Doc Pine Return!

Sunday, August 30th, 2020 by The Professor

This week marks not only the return of Doc Pine & Bobby to the Quarantine Takeover show but the world premiere of 12yr old Bobby’s soon to be classic “The Bro Down”. Could it be the feelgood hit of the summer with young Calvin (probably not with Hobbes or Susie)? Doc Pine continues in his efforts to school Bobby on classic tunes and new Americana releases, possibly slipping in some of his own (many) bands’ works.

Doc Pine combines creepy old Appalachian music, off kilter honky-tonk, murder ballads, yodeling, heavy rock jingles, and junkyard blues stomps in the hope of one day getting invited to the Sadie Hawkins Dance. He claims his songs “have been filtered through ten feet of sugar maple charcoal, which imparts a distinct smoothness to the music.” He has been cleared of all charges pertaining to a Louisiana bank heist in the summer of ‘09, although some investigations remain curiously incomplete. Find Doc Pine & The Respect He Deserves on Facebook or their website.

Quarantine Takeover – Red Sammy

Monday, August 24th, 2020 by The Professor

This week we hand over the keys to Baltimore band Red Sammy! Listen in at 7pm Tuesday and Thursday to take a wander through the minds of Adam Trice and Bruce Elliot from Red Sammy and hear from their new album releasing next week.

Adam Trice is an American writer, singer, and songwriter from Baltimore, MD. In 2007, he began performing in solo and duo ensembles under the name Red Sammy. His unique songwriting style blends rock, folk, country, and blues with thoughtful, and often, deeply emotional words that highlight a poetic sensibility. The name, Red Sammy, is taken from a minor character, Red Sammy Butts, in American southern gothic writer, Flannery O’Connor’s short story, “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” (1955). Notable songwriters and writers of inspiration include: Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Alejandro Escovedo, Tom Waits, Tom Petty, Lucinda Williams, Frank Black/The Pixies, Raymond Carver, W.C. Williams, Ernest Hemingway, Charles Bukowski, and many others.

Bruce Elliott is a Baltimore native with a life-long passion for music. He reluctantly put his musical ambitions on hold after college, choosing instead to pursue a career in science and technology. Once he had established himself as a responsible tax-paying adult, however, he made good on a promise to himself to return to his pursuit of playing the guitar in a band. He began by playing open-mic jams and then over the years played in several local bands including The Wharf Rats, To Big To Fail, and Retro Deluxe, as well as various lineups with veteran of the local music scene, Georgie Jessup. His current on-going effort is with the Red Sammy band, with whom he has played since 2014, contributing to three CDs. His playing style reflects influences of J.J. Cale, Eric Clapton, Jerry Garcia, and many others.

Quarantine Takeover Show – 7th Order

Friday, July 3rd, 2020 by The Professor

This week’s Quarantine Takeover show comes from overseas again! This time from the magical land of Hawai’i! We welcome Daniel Jones of the band 7th Order recording his show on the side of Kilahuea in the town of Volcano. The show is a tribute to late guitarist Jesse Ed Davis, who played with the pantheon of great rockers in the 60s and 70s.

Their first recording sessions took place in December 2001 but 7th Order’s roots are much deeper. The band has, at various times, been joined by veteran British guitarist Martin Pugh (formally of the 60’s British band, Steamhammer, as well as Armageddon with The Yardbirds vocalist Keith Relf, and “The Rod Stewart Album” with Ron Wood & Keith Emerson), drummer Tim Kelliher (of Randy Hansen’s Machine Gun), and legendary American rock guitarist Geoff Thorpe (of Vicious Rumors). Reminiscent of blues-rock bands like The Rolling Stones & The Yardbirds, with progressive undertones ala Led Zeppelin, there’s something in there for all of you. Their most recent release (June 2020) is a track titled “Voyager”, a tribute to the late American guitarist, Ronnie Montrose – and is a benefit for the incredible Sweet Relief Musicians Fund.

Vinylthon 2020 – Side 2

Friday, June 19th, 2020 by The Professor

It’s VINYLTHON 2020! Originally scheduled for April 18, but rescheduled (along with Record Store Day) to June 20 but WE DON’T CARE! We are doing TWO days of Vinylthon instead of one. It’s just how we roll… Tune in all day Saturday June 20 for shows that are 100% spun from vinyl starting at 1am and running through midnight! You’ll hear current DJ shows as well as alumni shows in one and two hour formats. WLOY has received a golden slipmat every year for doing at least 12 hours of all vinyl and this year even though we’re not making the usual full 24 we’re still running 18 hours of all vinyl shows! Stupid COVID-19 is keeping the studios closed but we have remote shows being sent in and we’re spinning vinyl wherever we can!

What is Vinylthon you ask? Read the press release below and find out more: (more…)

Quarantine Takeover Show – Surf Harp

Tuesday, June 16th, 2020 by The Professor

photo: Micah E. Wood

This week we feature our first International Quarantine Takeover show! Local artists Surf Harp are currently globally divided with Jeff still in Japan but they made it work. With some magical technology, you can hear them all together although Jeff Koplovitz is in Japan, and Phil Bolton and Chris Sweeney are in Baltimore. Surf Harp is a great local band that also has some roots in WLOY (it’s possible some of them were DJs…) and a band that won Battle of the Bands under a slightly different lineup and sound.

What is Surf Harp? Art rock. Kraut pop. Smooth vibes. 5 piece Baltimore band with latest full length, “MR. BIG PICTURE”, out now on Friends Records. Currently operating in Baltimore and Osaka in preparation for LP3. Featured on Bandcamp Daily, Medium, Tiny Mix Tapes, etc.
