Review: Anderson East – Encore

January 24th, 2018 by WLOY Staff

Artist: Anderson East

Album: Encore

Released: 01/12/2018

RIYL: James Morrison, Passenger, John Mayer, Ray LaMontagne

Rate: 10/10

As the boyfriend of one of my favorite country artists, Miranda Lambert, Anderson East is a person of my special interest. There’s something about this soulful singer’s voice that makes it clear why Lambert swoons over him—it’s downright gorgeous with just a touch of a rocker’s raspy-ness. From the beginning, Encore has a funkier and more upbeat and in-your-face sound than East’s previous album, Delilah. Still, Encore is not without a few of Anderson East’s signature style consisting of slower love songs. A lot of different (and great) components of the album remind me of the 60s and 70s funk-rock and The Temptations. With co-writers such as pop artist Ed Sheeran, country artist Chris Stapleton, and Nashville songwriter Aaron Raitiere, this album is pure beauty. In this way, Anderson East takes southern soul and twists it making his music accessible to listeners of many different genres.   Read the rest of this entry »

Special Jim Forrester Tribute show

January 22nd, 2018 by The Professor

“The Reverend” Jim Forrester (1974-2017) was an influential musician and piercing artist who had a positive impact on Baltimore’s rock scene for over 20 years. Sadly, Jim’s life was cut tragically short when he was murdered during an attempted robbery on the evening of December 18th, 2017, on Eastern Avenue.

The Rev played bass and contributed to the songwriting in a number of projects, including Sixty Watt Shaman, Angels of Meth, Foghound, and Serpents of Secrecy.  On Monday, January 15th, 2018, as a special epsiode of Studio Seizure, Loyola Radio broadcasted an hour-long tribute to Reverend Jim and his music.  The special was hosted by Earl Crown from Crucial Cuts, and featured guest Chuck Dukehart, a lifelong friend and bandmate of Forrester.

The Reverend Jim Forrester was known and beloved throughout the various subcultures within the Baltimore music scene as a genuinely positive force, a man of kindness and integrity. WLOY Loyola Radio would like to express our condolences to his family and friends, and to remember Jim’s life and accomplishments in this hour-long tribute.

Listen to a special Studio Seizure show tonight 7-8pm and look for it online here tomorrow.

Late Night 1/25: Nalani & Sarina and The Wldlfe!

January 20th, 2018 by The Professor

What a show this week! Not only the return of ever-popular Nalani & Sarina, but this time they’re bringing the full band! AND we’re bringing in serious up-and-coming-you’ll-be-bragging-you-saw-them-here-first talent from Indianapolis THE WLDLFE! Yep, either band could lay down a fantastic show for 2 hours but we know you need more stimulation so we’re putting 2 bands up in McGuire Hall just for you. And, as always, for FREE.

Loyola students already know Nalani & Sarina from their many performances as a duo on campus, but have never seen them here with the full band. Their new single “Young & Inexperienced” has been getting buzz in Billboard and even got them into the NY Post. These two audacious young artists, from west-central New Jersey, have developed a distinctive blend of traditionalist soul-rock and modern pop likely to keep their faces in the spotlight for years to come. Legendary music critic/Sirius radio host Dave Marsh called their EP, Scattered World, “some of the best music being made”, and fans, critics and taste-makers have echoed his praise.

The Wldlfe hail from Indianapolis and are about to drop their own new single (maybe you’ll here it in McGuire!) As an indie-alternative/pop band out of Indianapolis, IN they burst into the scene on March 3rd, 2016 when they released their debut EP entitled “NEW”. Since their debut, THE WLDLFE have released two EPs (NEW and I.L.Y) and one single (Text Me?). They have spent the last year performing across the United States and are currently home in Indiana working on their next project due out in April but they’re making a short run of shows including this one! Check out Queen Marge’s interview with The Wldlfe last year too!

Review: Spice Boys – Glade

January 17th, 2018 by WLOY Staff

Artist: Spice Boys

Album: Glade

Label: Punk Slime Recordings

Released: 01/12/2018

RIYL: FIDLAR, WAVVES, Together PANGEA

Rate: 9/10

When I first heard of the band Spice Boys, I was immediately intrigued and “Wannabe” by Spice Girls starting playing in my head. To my surprise, the Spice Boys are nothing like their flavorful, female, predecessors. Spice Boys released their first EP in 2016. After signing to Punk Slime Recordings shortly after this, Spice Boys have blessed us with their newest album, Glade. The whole album is full of distortion of all aspects of the songs—the vocals, the guitar, even the drums sound more static-y than normal. This Swedish garage rock band’s sound makes me think of kicking up some trouble with my friends on the beach in the summer. The use of echoes and wa-wa-like effects in all of the tracks just gives the album a really fun-inspiring. The fast-paced and upbeat songs make you want to dance like a fool. Matt Hutchison Kicks off 2018 Coffeehouse 1/18

January 11th, 2018 by The Professor

WLOY kicks off the 2018 Coffeehouse series with another local artist who’s played on the WLOY stage at Honfest, and toured the world with his band Fools & Horses. With Fools & Horses temporarily parted (see what we did there?) Matt has been releasing great solo work.

Matt sees himself as, “A modern-day gentleman cowboy, earnestly looking West out of his East-Coast bedroom window”. With 2 solo albums under his belt Matt has a ton of excellent pop songs (plus Fools & Horses hits) and more to make a great night of it. Make sure to ask him about buying his anniversary present at the Cracker Barrel. Check out his website!

Review: Shooter Jennings and Jason Boland – Baltimore Soundstage

December 10th, 2017 by WLOY Staff

On December 6, 2017, Shooter Jennings and Jason Boland rocked the Soundstage on the very first night of their joint tour. The opener was Sean K. Preston (not Britney Spears’ son as he mentioned) and he was equally as amazing. With a sound somewhere between Johnny Cash and Elvis, songs of divorce and snakeskin boots, and incredible vibrato, Preston set the stage perfectly for Shooter and Boland. Preston’s classic country sound complimented the mellowness of the genuinely heartfelt performance that ensued.  Read the rest of this entry »

Vote WLOY & Christmas Parade 10Best!!!

November 8th, 2017 by The Professor

Isn’t this amazing?! USA Today is trying to pick the 10 Best Holiday Parades in the country and one of the initial 20 they picked was the Mayor’s Annual Christmas Parade in Hampden!! It’s been going for 44 years (with only 1 shut down for snow) and WLOY has been a part of the parade for the last 8 years. We build a float on and around the station van and send our crew of WLOY elves out with bags of candy canes, shirts, and toys for kids along the route. With over 20,000 people on the street sides it’s no wonder we gave out over 3500 candy canes last year!!! When we found out that the parade was in the top 20 for this competition, we were excited to support it and tell you to vote. When we saw the featured picture seen by millions on the USA Today 10Best website was of THE WLOY FLOAT well… we kinda lost our minds. That’s Hillary Bowman ’14 up there throwing stuffed plush snowballs to the crowd on top of the WLOY van and inside the Merry Christmas Hon float. WOW! So, what can you do, other than just admire the fame we are now finding for Hillary? YOU can vote. And vote again. Right up until the day after the parade you can vote and repeat, and repeat… GO TO THIS LINKhttp://bit.ly/Vote4Baltimore – Share it with your friends and family, your coworkers, your pets, anyone that can click a link and vote. Vote often. THANKS!

As a bonus we’ll also have the great classic garage rock sounds of The Hall Monitors to keep you moving for another hour! The Hall Monitors bring us straight up fuzzed out classic 60s garage rock sounds. Everything they play should be on a slightly scratchy 45rpm 7″ record in every jukebox.
