Join WLOY in Feeding the Homeless

August 2nd, 2017 by The Professor

It’s that time of year again! Our annual BBQ for the homeless and needy in Baltimore is coming up August 5th. In past years we have fed more than 1,000 people at the BBQ and this year it’s looking just as big. Join us and more than 30 partner organizations as we grill and serve, distribute clothing and toiletries and entertain our great guests. St. Vincent de Paul church has once again donated their lovely park space for this year and we’ve got Shorty (Shorty’s Bootleg BBQ) bringing his big tow grill to add to the cooking power. You can donate in advance, or show up on Saturday to drop off items. We’ll be there setting up at 9am and food service starts at 11. We usually run until 3-4pm or we run out of thousands of hamburgers and hot dogs. It’s a great cause and it will change your life to see the true need in Baltimore. Join WLOY alumni and current staff for a fun day of service! More info is available on the Facebook Event page.

Explore Baltimore: Common Ground

July 28th, 2017 by WLOY Staff

What: Common Ground Cafe & Coffee

Where: 819 W 36th St

When: 7am-5pm Everyday

Let me let you in on a little tip: Common Ground is the best place in the world. No matter what you get at this place, you WILL enjoy it. I whole heartedly suggest walking in and just ordering the first thing you read because it’s guaranteed to be good. Common Ground has a little bit of everything from coffee to New York style bagels to sandwiches to vegan/vegetarian options. My personal favorite is the BLT on a sun-dried tomato bagel, which the friendly servers suggested I try one time. This combo did not disappoint and I am now hooked on it, craving my new favorite sandwich basically 24/7. If your not a meat person, then try out Common Ground’s other classics like the Avenue Powerhouse, which is homemade hummus, mixed greens, tomatoes and cucumbers, or go for the quiche of the day. Whatever you decide on, grab a delicious coffee with it (and maybe even use one of Common Ground’s WLOY mugs) and sit down to enjoy the great atmosphere of this amazing cafe.

Explore Baltimore: Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum

July 3rd, 2017 by WLOY Staff

What: Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum

Where: 216 Emory St

When: Hours

You know his name, you know the legend, but you have to come to the Babe Ruth Birthplace to know his whole, inspiring story. Called a must-see for baseball fans, this museum honoring the Great Bambino is located in his childhood home, showcasing some of his most meaningful memorabilia, like his bat from the 1927 season. Learn about what it was like for Babe to grow up in Baltimore, how he became such an amazing player, how he balanced his career and his family, and how his legend lives on through TV. By the end of you day, you’ll be able to write a book on the Great Bambino!

The fun at the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum doesn’t stop there though. The museum honors Babe’s passion for baseball by celebrating the sport itself through several of its exhibits. Check out the 500 Home Run Club, complete with jerseys and memorabilia for the featured players. Love the history of the sport more? Then check out the exhibit, O Say Can You See: The Star Spangled Banner in Sports, which explores our anthem’s place in sports and honors the War of 1812 in a film. With all these great exhibits, your love of baseball OR Babe won’t be let down at the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum.
