Les Nubians Interview

With the release of their third album in 2009, Les Nubians have been entertaining fans for a decade with their Afropean style. In those 10 years they have received a Grammy nomination, two Soul Train Lady nominations and two nominations for the NAACP Image Awards. They have one of the leading French-language albums in the past 20 years.

Brothers Past Interview

Philadelphia natives, Brothers Past, have a hard time fitting into one genre. Their strength is their seamless mixture of electronica and rock that paves the way for future types of music. Their latest album, This Feeling’s Called Goodbye, was nominated for “Album of the Year” at the 2009 Jammy Awards.

Margaret Cho Interview

Margaret Cho, stand up comic since the age of 16, received the Victory Fund Leadership Award in 2008 and the Best Comedy Award at the 2007 Asian Excellence Awards. She has now taken her comedic brilliance to music.  Her album of comedy songs, Cho Dependent, was released this past August.  She worked with great artists like Tegan and Sara, Ben Lee and Fiona Apple.  She also took Cho Dependent on tour this fall combining her stand up with her new music. WLOY has been fortunate to catch Margaret for 2 interviews, the first when she performed at Loyola in 2003 and the second just before her show in Baltimore in 2008.

Food Friday: Bel Air Downtown Alliance

Sweet tooth or not, the Bel Air Reckord Armory is the place for you to be on March 5, 2011. The Bel Air Downtown Alliance are preparing to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their annual “Chocolate & Candy Festival.” 2011 also marks the tenth year of the Downtown Alliance, so make sure you come out to help celebrate a decade of deliciousness and dedication. There will be vendors from all over Maryland providing Bel Air with homemade treats, both for sampling as well as purchase.

Admission to the event is only $5, and for children under the age of 6 it is completely FREE. Just what a parents need. So come on out and treat yourself to some sweets. Jessica Lea Mayfield – Tell Me

The Ohio folk singer/songwriter, Jessica Lea Mayfield has combined the likes of country singers Gillian Welch and Lucinda Williams with the new neo-folk country sound of The Avett Brothers and Bright Eyes’ I’m Wide Awake It’s Morning, on her new LP, Tell Me. With a soft, but powerful voice and lofty love songs, Mayfield is on the verge of breaking into a trendy indie country scene, especially with her support of the Avett Brothers on their current tour. From the steady thump of bass-lines to the vintage screech of 70s organ, Tell Me has a relentless cry toward “what music used to be”, something the Avetts missed on their most recent LP. Theater Thursday: Les Miserables

For all you theater junkies and revolution enthusiasts living in Baltimore, Les Misérables is finally coming to Charm City. The brand new 25th anniversary production, brought to us by Cameron Mackintosh, promises a fresh interpretation of the legendary play that has roamed the world over since its French debut in 1980 and its English debut in 1985. Les Misérables, based on Victor Hugo’s classic 1862 novel of the same name, tells the gripping tale of the endurance of love and life amongst the horrors of the French Revolution. No. 12 Greyhounds Women’s Lacrosse Team Prepares for UVA

The Loyola University women’s lacrosse team has been honored as the 12th ranked team going into the 2011 season.  The Greyhounds will be led by seniors Grace Gavin, who was named 2011 preseason Big East offensive player of the year, Cara Filippelli, and Abby Rehfuss who were named to the 2011 preseason All-Big East team.  Other notable seniors– Meg Decker, Kellye Gallagher, Helen McCutcheon, Johanna Gibson, Mary Heneberry, Caroline Hager, Kelly Quinlan, and Meg Steffe will also help the Greyhounds this upcoming spring.  With a very vigorous schedule, the Greyhounds will have their hands full.  They will play eight teams that are ranked in nations top 20 Team Poll this spring.  The Greyhounds are in The Big East which is a very challenging conference, and it will certainly be a task for the Greyhounds. Thursday’s Coffeehouse features Harlem Renaissance theme

This Thursday February 17 WLOY is hosting another Late Night Coffeehouse. In light of February being Black History Month, this week’s theme is Harlem Renaissance and we’re co-sponsoring it with the Student Government Association. This Coffeehouse will be multi-format: there will be spoken word, poetry, open mic and more. As always, the Late Night Coffeehouse will be held in the Reading Room at 9PM, so bring your friends and stop by!
