Studio Seizure: Stacked Like Pancakes

Monday, February 13th, 2017 by The Professor

Tonight 7-8pm, we hand the studio over to the funky madmen of Stacked Like Pancakes!  Fresh off their tour with Reel Big Fish and sporting all sorts of new stories, we’re going to let them spin their favorite tunes and dish on some good road stories.

They played our fundraiser for The Book Thing last year and blew us all away with their live energy! ”Reinvigorating the sounds of classic ska, Stacked Like Pancakes (SLP) piles on boisterous horns and punk rock attitude to create high energy music synthesizing the vibes of Reel Big Fish, twenty one pilots, Foo Fighters, Paramore, Cage the Elephant, and an untraceable amount of other artists and genres. Since 2007, SLP has shared the stage with national and international acts, toured on the Vans Warped Tour, headlined their own self-booked tours, released their latest crowd-funded 15-track monster-album THIS IS US in December 2015, and in 2016 went on the road with Reel Big Fish for a month-long nation-wide syrupy tour.

Staff Picks: Jeremy’s Top 5 Albums of 2016

Friday, December 23rd, 2016 by WLOY Staff

Review by: Jeremy Stephenson’17

170x170bb-15. Led Zeppelin – IV (untitled) –  [itunes link=”https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/led-zeppelin-iv-remastered/id580708175?uo=4″ title=”Led_Zeppelin_IV_(Remastered)”]

This is by far my favorite Zeppelin album. Start to finish this album will take you to magical places far away. The bluesy folk rock feel will make you dance your face off but still keep your neck sore from all the head banging. Remember to soften it up with Going to California.

170x170bb-55. Young Chasers – Circa Waves – [itunes link=”https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/young-chasers/id1018516137?uo=4″ title=”Young_Chasers”]

This is the new Brtish band’s first album and it’s great. This whole album just makes you think of happy times. The suns shining, you’re on vacation with no worries and you’ve got this album playing through your headphones. This is what I picture of what it feels to be stress free. “Get Away” and “T-Shirt Weather” are summer anthems that will make you listen to them endlessly on repeat. This album is very professional and has very catchy guitar riffs to go along with the catchy melodies.

Review by: Stephen Vanyo’17

Disclaimer: These albums are albums listened to in 2016, these may not actually be albums released in 2016.

 * Disclaimer these rankings aren’t hard and true, please don’t get mad at me for not putting Beyonce on this, Beyonce has her time elsewhere *

170x170bb5. D.R.A.M – Big Baby DRAM – [itunes link=”https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/big-baby-d.r.a.m./id1162244059?uo=4″ title=”Big_Baby_DRAM”]

Fresh off the success of “Cha Cha”, D.R.A.M  dropped his soul influenced, positivity laced new LP “Big Baby D.R.A.M”. With features coming from everyone from Lil Yachty to Erykah Badu, D.R.A.M shook up the hip-hop world with his energetic style of hip-hop. Described by D.R.A.M himself as “trappy-go lucky music”, D.R.A.M clearly differentiated himself from his counterparts this year. “[itunes link=”https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/broccoli-feat.-lil-yachty/id1162247737?i=1162248457&uo=4″ title=”Broccoli” text=”Broccoli”]” is a certified party anthem.

Staff Picks: Abby’s Top 5 Albums of 2016

Monday, December 12th, 2016 by WLOY Staff

Review by: Abby Cirelli ’20

Disclaimer: These albums are albums listened to in 2016, these may not actually be albums released in 2016.

170x170bb-35. Highly Suspect – The Boy who died wolf – [itunes link=”https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/the-boy-who-died-wolf/id1149445034?uo=4″ title=”The_Boy_Who_Died_Wolf”]

Highly Suspect’s album, released in November of 2016 brings back signature 90s grunge rock vibes, with some bluesy bar-room charm. “Viper strike” is an energetic song driven by heavy distortions while “Little One” is a more toned down reflection on a past relationships. The album is great for getting the adrenaline going but also to sit back and listen to the reflective lyrics.

Staff Picks: Claire’s Top 5 Albums of 2016

Monday, December 12th, 2016 by WLOY Staff

Review by: Claire Riley’ 20

170x170bb5.) I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again Mama! – Janis Joplin – [itunes link=”https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/i-got-dem-ol-kozmic-blues/id1073650135?uo=4″ title=”I_Got_Dem_Ol_Kozmic_Blues_Again_Mama”]

I loooooove Janis Joplin and especially this album. Janis suffered a lot in her childhood from bullying and struggled later in life with love and not surprisingly, drugs and alcohol. In this album, she really pours her heart out and opens herself up to her fans about everything that she’s going through and how it effects her. She’s so genuine and straightforward in her music and that’s especially shown in this album.

Studio Seizure : Nalani & Sarina

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2016 by The Professor

The dynamic duo, twins Nalani & Sarina, swung through town in November. Since they were playing 2 days in a row in Baltimore, including our show 11/10/16, we managed to snag an hour of their time on the 11th for a Studio Seizure session. With a pop style well-rooted in classic R&B and Soul music, these two always put on a great show.

For their Seizure we let them be the DJs and, not surprisingly, a lot of killer songs came up in their mix. Whether you’re talking vintage Stax Records or modern folks like Allen Stone, Nalani & Sarina know their music. And how about that time they covered a Bruce Springsteen song with The Boss in the audience?! Listen in to hear great stories and songs on this week’s Studio Seizure.
