Toronzo Cannon Interview 10/29/19

Tuesday, October 29th, 2019 by The Professor

Toronzo Cannon is coming to the area in a rare appearance at The Soundry in Columbia, MD on Saturday November 2nd. Since he has a full-time job driving a Chicago city bus, he only tours in weekend bursts and vacation days, making it a rare treat to get him in the area. Touring now on his excellent new release The Preacher, The Politician or The Pimp (Alligator Records), Toronzo is raising the bar again with a great live show and killer guitar work. We first met at the Lancaster Roots and Blues in 2016 (interview here) and he blew me away with the energy he put into a live show. Ahead of this weeks show Toronzo was able to squeeze in a quick interview on his lunch break! It’s well worth the trip to Columbia to check him out live and see why he’s in such high demand worldwide! [audio:https://wloy.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/WLOY_INT_Toronzo_Cannon_102919.mp3]

5 Best Study Spots in Baltimore

Tuesday, October 8th, 2019 by WLOY Staff

Are you a college student in Baltimore?  Do you ever wish you had that perfect off-campus spot to do your work but you just don’t know where to go?  I feel you.  And this one’s for you.

1.  Sophomore Coffee

Sophomore Coffee, to me, is one of the best study spots in Baltimore.  It’s located right around the Barclay neighborhood, just a seven minute walk away from Baltimore’s famous Graffiti Alley.  Sophomore Coffee is essentially hidden, situated just underground, and it definitely has that quaint, hole-in-the-wall kind of feel.  It’s super small and quiet–perfect for focusing on homework–and definitely very aesthetically pleasing.

Thursday, September 26th, 2019 by WLOY Staff

wloy coffee house 9/26 flyer - acoustic paradise with Nick and Bobby from paradise creek - WLOYAcoustic Paradise is a duo that sprung from an alternative rock band called Paradise Creek, that was created in Annapolis, Maryland back in 2014.  The full band consists of Nik Diamondidis with vocals, Nick Macleay on guitar, Bobby Sacker on bass, Garrett Smith on guitar, and Nate Merrill on drums.  The duo Acoustic Paradise, however, is made up of band members Nick Macleay and Bobby Sacker.  Their sound and perspective is fresh and extremely relatable to young people, as they are quite young, themselves.  In fact, Paradise Creek won our very own Loyola’s Battle of the Bands in 2016!  Nick and Bobby will be performing here at Starbucks tonight from 8-10pm so be sure to come check it out…and if you like what you hear, stay on the lookout for our giveaway tomorrow where we’ll be giving out two tickets to go see the full band this Saturday at Zen West!  Come on out to Starbucks tonight!

Baltimore Record Bazaar

Thursday, September 19th, 2019 by The Professor

Sunday September 22nd ~ 11am to 5pm

Are you a vinyl fiend, new collector or just interested in something fun on a Sunday? Follow up your Saturday at Hampdenfest by digging in some crates for some new tunes. The Baltimore Record Bazaar has returned following the (very sad) closing of the great Windup Space with a new event at Peabody Heights Brewery (401 E 30th St, Baltimore). These are fun events for music lovers regardless of your choice of format. From CDs to 8-track tapes, you’re likely to find a bit of everything in the crates. Typically more than 30 vendors fill the space with tables full of classic and obscure vinyl. Baby’s on Fire (another great Baltimore place you need to visit) will be providing the food, and live DJs will provide entertainment (along with a special show from Loop Diggas) so you’ll be able to chill while you shop. Adult beverages will be available from Peabody Heights on-site brewery. Vendors will include Trax on Wax, Smash!, Joe’s Record Paradise, Mikie Love’s Discount Vinyl Shanty & Turntable Emporium, The Book Thing, Krony’s Records @ Just Audio, Kabukiman’s Treasure Dojo, Retro Effex, Mystery Sound Recordings, Boops Records, Rasslin’ Records, Chick’s Records, Indoor Games Records, Dj Kenny Megan, Bernie, & many more. Entry is FREE so you can put that cash into vinyl 🙂

Majority Onion & F City at Blackbox 9/19

Tuesday, September 17th, 2019 by WLOY Staff

This Thursday, Majority Onion, featuring beatboxer Max Brent, and F City will be playing here at Loyola in the Blackbox Theatre from 8-10pm.  Majority Onion is a Baltimore based band with a sound described as “farm funk”.  Their songs feature bass, vocals, and beatboxing by Max Brent, who also creates his own original music and performs for all ages from pre-kindergarten to adult.  F City is a band also from Baltimore, featuring Paul Joyce on bass, Lala Anderson on lead vocals and keyboards, and Landis Expandis on lead vocals and drums.  Their genre is described as “soul punk”, one that could fit a variety of settings from a dance club to a rock show.  They’re fun, eccentric, and brilliantly weird.  They’ll also be performing at Hampdenfest on September 21st, so be sure to check that out.  Come out this Thursday to the Blackbox Theatre and experience Majority Onion and F City!

5 Unique Restaurants in Baltimore You NEED To Try

Tuesday, September 10th, 2019 by WLOY Staff

Food with as much personality as you!

@gutterutter shares a photo at The Papermoon Diner / unique restaurants in baltimore / WLOY

Sometimes, we need to spice up our lives a bit. And what better way to do that than trying some new places to eat? Don’t be boring and go back to the same old, plain restaurants that just don’t seem to offer anything special. Try one of these 5 unique restaurants in Baltimore and find your new hidden gem in this city that’s exploding with culture and charm!

1. One of the MOST Unique Restaurants In Baltimore – The Papermoon Diner

The Papermoon Diner is my FAVORITE of these unique restaurants in Baltimore. Not only is the food unbeatable, with mouth watering carnivorous AND vegetarian/vegan options like crab quesadillas and vegan nachos, but the atmosphere is spectacularly eclectic and nostalgic. It’s located right by the Baltimore Museum of Art, but the real art is the restaurant, itself. Upon walking in you’ll feel like you just stepped into a real-life comic book, with weird trinkets and figurines, galore. It’s also a great date spot; you’ll have lots to discuss as you dine in your childhood heaven!
