Lavender & Modern Nomad LIVE 9/20

Tuesday, September 18th, 2018 by The Professor

Late Night at McGuire Hall. 8pm-10pm. Be there or be square. WLOY will be hosting Washington DC’s Lavender and Baltimore’s own, Modern Nomad– and I honestly could not think of a better sound combination. If you think of driving in the car with the windows down on a comfortably warm summer’s day and you only had your thoughts and a soundtrack– this concert would be it. Lavender and Modern Nomad’s alt indie vibes will put you into a dream-like trans. Lavender is closer in likeness to the 1975, but with a female vocalist, where Modern Nomad has a more Tame Impala feel to them. Trust me this is not a show you want to miss; hope to see you there.

Charm City Night Market

Monday, September 17th, 2018 by The Professor

What: Charm City Night Market

Where: Historic Chinatown– 200 Park Ave

When: Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 4:00 p.m- 11:00pm

The Charm City Night Market, happening this Saturday, will be the first of hopefully many future Lunar Mid-Autumn Festivals that will be taking place in Baltimore, spanning from the Lexington Market to Park Avenue. Learn about the Chinese culture by listening to the music–not to mention, a WLOY favorite, Cecilia Grace will be performing on the main stage at 5:00pm. Take a moment to experience the art, whether that be in the form of jewelry or lanterns (maybe even buy a few things). And also make sure to take advantage of my favorite part of any culture, and taste as much of the food as your wallet allows. Take a sneak of what there is to offer by accessing their instagram @charmcitynightmarket.

Summer Happenings at WLOY (part 1)

Wednesday, July 11th, 2018 by The Professor

There is a lot going on this summer at WLOY. We kicked it off with an amazing Honfest experience (despite the rain) that drew big crowds to our stage and connected great bands with new audiences. While preparing for that we had boxes upon boxes of new stuff arriving. Why? We can’t show you everything but WLOY is going DIGITAL. All of our studios are being upgraded to networked digital audio systems, just like all the top stations in the world use now. We’ll be able to do all sorts of cool new stuff, including more podcasts, remote broadcasts and live band events. We are also building a new live room for all those bands that keep trying to fit in our small studios to perform. More teasers to follow on that front! For now, just check out the resourcefulness of our GM Tara. When confronted with so many boxes she couldn’t use a desk, she turned them into her own private office! Stay tuned to see just what we’re going to take out of all those boxes!

What Happens Next? New Episode

Friday, June 22nd, 2018 by The Professor

While it may be summer time, we still squeeze an occasional episode of our award-winning kids show into the mix. Katie worked with some of our usual crew to create new episodes (posted in our full page list) and Tara is working on completing a cool new summer workbook with a call-in feature for kids!

This week’s episode is “A Greener Playground” in which Harley notices that her school playground is ridiculously littered. Gabrielle, Sydney, and kids from Govans elementary tell us what she decides to do about it. [audio:https://wloy.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/WHN-051218.mp3]

Check back for new episode posts, listen in on Saturdays and Sundays at 12pm to hear them first, and dig through our recent show archives to hear past episodes of What Happens Next?

Review: The Great Heights Band – rad-pop.

Wednesday, April 25th, 2018 by WLOY Staff

Artist: The Great Heights Band
Album: rad-pop.
Release Date: 04/20/2018
RIYL: With The Punches, Seaway, Man Overboard
Rating: 9/10

Anticipating the release of their latest album, The Great Heights Band performed an acoustic set at our WLOY coffeehouse Thursday night event, on April 19, 2018. Vocalists and guitarists Neal Karkhanis and Eric Taft performed a copious amount of songs off of rad-pop., which was released at midnight on April 20, 2018. Karkhanis and Taft exhibited the perfect amount of energy for a coffeehouse event by providing awesome music, telling stories of how their songs came to be, and interacting with the crowd. They were obviously performers and musicians at heart.

There’s something about an acoustic pop-punk sound that can only be described as freaking’ sweet. After hearing rad-pop. live and acoustic, and now off of their record, I really have an appreciation for this album and the talent of The Great Heights Band. Two tracks that really stood out to me were “Straight to Hell” and “ All In.”

Opening up the album with a pop-punk sound is “Straight to Hell.” It definitely has a sound similar to that of the music that Weezer has produced on their last two albums in regards to that alternative kind of electronic music. The lyrics to the chorus have a straight-up sentiment: “this world’s gone straight to Hell/and I don’t care at all/if we just keep things real.” I mean, the lyrics are pretty accurate—at least they are in my world as finals are approaching.

“All In” has an upbeat, blissfully distorted, rock sound. Both the rhythm guitar and the lead guitar along with the drums and cool use of the symbols convey a sound that you’d want to hear if you were about flip over a table and break things—in a good, happy way. The lyrics, “I’m all in/so come on!” just make you want to join in on the trouble-making festivities.

Overall, rad-pop. is exactly what it sounds like—a rad mixture of rock and punk with pop influences. That being said, there is variety of sound across the songs, which keeps the songs from sounding the same. Although I do have to say, “All In” and “What’s Real” sound alike, but they are consecutive songs on the album, and I think they are meant to flow into one another. rad-pop. is easy to get into and fall in-love with. I found myself singing along to the songs with only one-to-two prior listens. So there you go my friends, go forth listening to rad-pop. and conquer.
