Well, well, well, it looks like the Kooks are gettin’ kind of funky here. Listen has been described as having some ska and even hip-hop influences from this traditionally indie rock band from Britain. This is such a deviation from their norm that if Luke Prichard didn’t have such a unique voice, this album wouldn’t even be recognizable as the Kooks. Because of that, this newest release rubs some people the wrong way, but personally I can dig it. (more…)

Festival Spotlight: Hot August Music Festival

Hot August Festival Since it’s inception in Brad Selko’s back yard the Hot August Blues Festival has grown to fill the hillside at Oregon Ridge every year, packing another side stage and a huge kids area. It’s also gone through a name change to the Hot August Music Festival. Selko has long tried to vary the genre of acts gracing the stage and this year is no exception with a great varied lineup including: Old Crow Medicine Show, Nickel Creek, Dr. Dog, Tab Benoit, Turkuaz, Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds, Cabinet, Houndmouth, Long John Hunter, ELM, Bosley, Jordan August Band, and The Solicitors. WLOY’s hard rockin’ Matt Weitzel ’17 (of It’s a Hard Rock Life) sat down with 3 of the guys from New Jersey’s Fit For An Autopsy for a chat before their show at Baltimore Soundstage June 14. Mingo Fishtrap Review

One of the many unexpectedly unforgettable free concerts of the Rochester International Jazz Festival 

To some, standing shoulder to shoulder in a rambunctious crowd of Rochesterians on an 85-degree night might seem unpleasant, but as I scanned the crowd, I couldn’t find a single soul that wasn’t enjoying the concert. Mingo Fishtrap was kicking off the third night of the Rochester International Jazz Festival in an unforgettable manner. It was hard to imagine cars ever driving on Gibbs Street because the music lovers had claimed the road as their own.  Strangers quickly became dancing partners and friends as Mingo Fishtrap’s soulful funky sound assertively boogied its way through the crowd. 4th of July with Moldie Oldies!

Our annual tradition continues!

Join Nick Centanni on WLOY 10-12PM and 6-8PM for 2 separate beachfront broadcasts of the Moldy Oldie Show this July 4!

Nick will have a mix of upbeat summer songs, Independence Day facts, jokes, and of course periodic visits from campus royalty via the ‘gold campus royalty phone.’

He will be up to his usual tricks so you won’t know what to expect next. There will also be a special Independence Day wishes from some familiar voices in the 6-8PM hours.

This is high octane radio so make it a date and don’t be late! The fun begins July 4 at 10AM all right here on WLOY!

Honfest Spotlight: Caleb Stine

267px-Calebstineliveshot The ever so talented and accomplished Baltimore folk artist Caleb Stine will perform at the WLOY stage for Honfest 2014. Originally from Colorado, Caleb is well known in the Baltimore music scene for his down-to-earth and heartfelt tunes. He is a mountain man at heart and his roots really shine in his performances. The BALTIMORE SUN has called Caleb the “lynchpin of the Baltimore folk scene.” Caleb has released six albums, scored soundtracks, acted Off-Broadway, and has performed in a number of venues from bars to symphony halls and everywhere in between. Caleb really is the man who has done it all and we are so lucky to have him perform on our stage on June 15th. So come on by, enjoy good music, and support your local station WLOY.
