Mark Hopkins – Studio Seizure
Tuesday, April 4th, 2023 by The Professor
We are very excited to have Studio Seizure return with great local guitarist (among other things) Mark Hopkins. Mark has played numerous shows on campus for us (rumor has it he liked one of our posters enough to swipe it). He’s fronted his own bands The Hotel, The Pretty War and is back with the resurrected Tribe of Ben.
Did we mention he’s also got a great interview podcast of his own and is perpetually playing with all manner of guitar pedals. Sit back and enjoy a deeper dive into what makes his musical mind happy, and how Pearl Jam and Dawes are currently battle for #1 in his heart. Studio Seizure returns 7pm Tuesday!

From 6-7pm a private event in McGuire for the alumni and staff with music from alums Maria Dontas and Taylor DeBoer and then we open the doors to all from 7-9pm. Music from local greats Skribe and Saleem & The Music Lovers (Saleem also hosts Hip-Hop Revisited on WLOY Saturdays 2-4pm). Join us for some fun memories, and great local live music like we’ve been highlight for 20 years.

Vinylthon 2023 – April 22 & 23
Tuesday, March 7th, 2023 by The Professor

But this year we are upping the madness and going for a full 48 hours of nothing but vinyl shows on the air! Join us, some crazy alumni, and a lot of local record shops as we celebrate the beauty of vinyl (and maybe some shellac) records all weekend. As a bonus it’s also Alumni Weekend at Loyola so you can expect a lot of people spinning records and making unforced errors as they try to restore their DJ muscle memories 😉

Vakili Band in town
Friday, February 3rd, 2023 by The Professor
REPOST from October because…
They’re finally coming to Baltimore 2/11 at Joe Squared
Wooo! We are BACK! In studio with the Vakili Band during a stop on their way to their show in DC at The Runaway tonight. Ben Ostrowski ’24 hung out with the full band for our first in studio band visit since the dreaded closure of 2020… So glad to start having bands back in and they were a great one. The whole band hung and talked process, their new Walking Sideways album, recording vs live versions, and how well Gordon packs the van. A lot of fun and a great way to get back into live interviews. Can’t wait for them to come back in the spring for a show in Baltimore. Meanwhile check out their new album and listen to the interview in case you missed it live.

Event Recap: Open Mic Night
Wednesday, January 25th, 2023 by Liz Kosik
by Daniel Carter ’26 WLOY had the pleasure of hosting another of our great Open Mic Nights this past Saturday! Each semester WLOY hosts Open Mic Nights to allow students to showcase singing, instrumental, spoken-word, and comedic talents for fellow students to enjoy. The night started off with great original music and covers from students Ed and Kevin, with one playing the guitar and the other playing bass! Then the group that followed them was 3 Cars consisting of three students Carly, Benji, and Andrew. They put on a great cover of “Life is Highway” by Tom Cochrane (also covered by Rascal Flatts) to close the set. After a number of students joined to sing some of their favorite songs. The night ended with an entertaining cover of the song “Rick and Morty” by a student. WLOY thanks all everyone who performed and showed their support! Join us February 4th for the last Open Mic of the semester and get ready to join Songwriter Skirmish (4/1) and Battle of the Bands (4/13) to win a spot at Loyolapalooza!
