Album of the Week: Okey Dokey – “Once Upon One Time”

Reviewed By: Anna Markulis
Released: October 23rd, 2020
Rate: 8/10
RIYL: Dent May, Infinite Bisous, Loving, Kid Bloom, Vista Kicks
Once Upon One Time is Okey Dokey’s third album and their most unique yet. With the help of Dave Harrington of Darkside, Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear, and band members of The Shins and My Morning Jacket, this album embodies a variety of styles that come together perfectly.
“Big City” features a funky bassline that hooks the listener, while “Just You” experiments with a dream pop-inspired sound. “Wine Friends” is the perfect combination of an acoustic and dreamy sound, and “Feel Brand New” truly feels like a brand-new sound that features more influences of dream pop, as well as folk-rock.

This song has the same vibes as many of the other songs of the week. I think with the current environment, having chill music to listen to is definitely a necessity. This song has a soft sound and amazing vocals. It brings to you to a place where you can focus on the great lyrics and the mellow vibe of the song. If you need a break from the hustle and bustle of life, I would listen to this song.

Album of the Week: Mr. Gnome – “The Day You Flew Away”

Reviewed By: Anna Markulis
Released: October 16th, 2020
Rate: 8.5/10
RIYL: Soccer Mommy, Alex G, Big Thief, Jay Som, Lana Del Rey
Indie rock band Mr. Gnome takes us on a surreal, psychedelic journey through the heartbreak and happiness of life in their new album, The Day You Flew Away. This is Mr. Gnome’s fifth album and will be available for streaming and purchase on October 16th.
The Day You Flew Away is truly the pinnacle of Mr. Gnome’s creative work. While the general theme of this album focuses on the astral realm above with songs like “Space Opera,” “The Moon,” and “Psychonaut,” the meaning is quite the opposite, exploring emotions and the struggles of life on earth. Mr. Gnome experiments with this galactic psychedelic sound while still remaining true to their classic indie-rock roots in The Day You Flew Away. You do not want to miss out on this astral journey through time and space. Be sure to give this a listen!

Indispensable Oyster – Show 2
October 20th, 2020 by The Professor
Host: Prof. David Belz
Welcome to another episode of The Indispensable Oyster, a conversation with people of interest about subjects Loyola, Baltimore and beyond, produced by WLOY Radio in cooperation with Right Brain Creative Services. Join our host author and professor David Belz for a glimpse into the lives of two Loyola alums who’ve turned making smoothies into a mission to help the Loyola community stay healthy.
Mark Rohde, ’76 and Cindy Campagna Rohde, ’78 met as varsity athletes at Loyola and the chemistry was irresistible. A basketball standout from 1972-1976, Mark scored a career 1,103 points, ranking him 20th on the all-time Loyola scoring list. He served as Loyola’s Sports Information Director, head tennis coach, and assistant basketball coach in the late 1970s. Cindy was a three-sport, nine-letter athlete in basketball, volleyball, and lacrosse. They are only the second husband-wife duo in the Loyola Athletics Hall of Fame. The Rohdes own and operate the Smoothie King on Cold Spring Lane, just blocks from the Evergreen campus.

Quarantine Takeover – Queen Kyla Vera
October 13th, 2020 by The Professor
This week we’re joined by the amazing Queen Kyla Vera of Metalachi! She’s the rocking metal violin powerhouse soloist you won’t believe unless you see her live. We were lucky to have the monsters of mariachi come by the station once upon a pre-COVID time and had a blast with them all (Check out their Studio Seizure!). Kyla is highlighting some great music this week – all bands and artists that she has performed with (or Metalachi has) including some incredible violinists and some rock legends (Suicidal Tendancies! Lamb of God!) so tune in and check it out. Luckily her crazed kitten Gizmo stopped trying to eat the microphone and resorted to just attacking Kyla so the show could be finished… We can’t wait for Metachi to stomp it’s way back east again from LA soon!!

Song of the Week: “Lavender” by Vacations
October 9th, 2020 by Ronnie Gruseck
By Aly Martinez
“When I first heard this song what really caught my attention was how fun it sounded. I for one am partial to any type of music that makes me want to stand up and dance around my room and that is definitely something that this song inspires. The lightheartedness of the lyrics goes perfectly with its indie-pop sound. It’s a perfect song for just hanging out or driving around with the windows down while you take in that last bit of summer!”
Definitely a song to add to your study playlist in the midst of midterms!
