This week brings a some seasoned acts as well as some new bands. The new Bright Eyes album that everyone’s been waiting for, titled The People’s Key, has arrived. Additionally, indie band Tennis released their debut, Cape Dory (left). This band has a very Vampire Weekend vibe, and it will be interesting to see where these artists go. MTVU Woodie Award Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BALTIMORE, MD (February 1, 2011)-

WLOY, the non-profit, student-run radio station at Loyola University Maryland, has been honored as one of the top fifty college radio stations on the 2011 mtvU College Radio Woodie list. Stations that have been nominated to this list are being recognized as pioneers in the industry, exposing the most recent emerging music. Nominations are now open to the public for voting on RateMyProfessors.com. WLOY for the first time is accompanying the biggest names in college radio including previous winners, WICB-Ithaca and KUPS-Tacoma. As WLOY strengthens in listenership, an acknowledgment such as this can only increase the station’s prevalence on air.

On Tuesday February 8th Rate My Professor will be unveiling the Top 25 nominees for the Woodie Award. The winner of the award will be announced live for the first time on air on March 16th on MTV, MTV2, and mtvU.

WLOY is Loyola University Maryland’s campus radio station.  Going on the air in 2003, the station is entirely student run, with all board member positions being filled by current undergraduate and graduate students.  WLOY offers a variety of live shows of different genres. Shows are hosted by students and community members and incorporate children from the community. WLOY has been recognized and awarded by both local and national organizations. WLOY named Top 50 for MTVU Woodie! We Need More Votes!

Currently, Cold War Kids and Decemberists are holding the top two spots; however, keep a lookout for Young Galaxy (left) and the new band Tennis as they coast up the ranks with their breezy beach sound.

Super Mash Bros Interview

Last weekend Ryan Nisley ’11 had the chance to meet Nick Fenmore, the brains behind Super Mash Bros. Aside from dancing the night away to every mashed-up pop song imaginable, he returned with a solid interview and some great pictures of the night, thanks to Kate Marshall.  Nick and Ryan talked about video games, their new live set, and their upcoming album, which is sure to dominate college campuses across the nation.

This week Cold War Kids make their debut at the number one spot with their new album, Mine Is Yours, which drops today! “Finally Begin” is an unreleased song that hasn’t even hit the radio waves yet! Aren’t you lucky that you get to hear it before everyone else? This album is going to launch Cold War Kids into mainstream stardom if they haven’t achieved it already. Another band to keep an eye on is The Decemberists, who recently released their album, The King Is Dead.

Late Night Concert Thursday 1/27 Postponed

This Thursday 1/27 WLOY is hosting the first Late Night Concert of the spring semester in McGuire Hall from 9 until midnight. This time, we’ll be featuring two Loyola acts. A duo of juniors that call themselves Beauty and the Greek will open the event and the sophomore ensemble The Palace at 4 AM will follow.

Wacky Wednesdays: Stoneleigh Lanes

Like bowling but wish it was different? Search no more! Down the street from Loyola lay Stoneleigh Lanes, which features 16 lanes of duckpin bowling. Yes, you heard me correctly: I said duckpin bowling. And no, it doesn’t involve ducks. Although the rules are similar to normal ten-pin bowling, duckpin bowling is not the bowling that you may be used to playing. Voted the “Best Bowling Alley” by Baltimore Magazine, Stoneleigh Lane’s duckpin bowling is a new and interesting way to bowl!
