Leslie-Cam at CBI San Antonio
October 30th, 2013 by The Professor
Yep, we’re putting a GoPro camera on top of Leslie’s usual pink kitty helmet and sending her to San Antonio, Texas to see what she can find at the National Student Electronic Media Convention. We don’t know what will happen, or how the TSA will like this… but we hope she’ll get some good footage as we collect 5 national awards, and perhaps go for a swim in the rooftop hotel. Who knows what she’ll bring back? Yes, we’re odd. But really that’s why you love us isn’t it?
Follow the camera exploits on our Facebook and Twitter accounts. Look for the #CBITexas tags for news and happenings from the conference. Let’s hope Leslie has as much fun with this as we’re already having.
BTW, you can listen to Leslie and her co-host (and roommate at the conference) Kathleen on their show Privetz every Monday 7-8pm. But you can catch WLOY Live from San Antonio on Friday this week 12-2pm EST.
UPDATE: Video is up on our Facebook page. It’s kinda NSFW and kinda insane thanks to Leslie’s frenetic MTV-vs.-Blair-Witch style of editing. Try not to laugh… we dare you. This font is pink because… Leslie.

NBA Basketball Starts Up Again
October 29th, 2013 by WLOY Staff
It’s that time of year again. NBA basketball is finally back in season starting tonight with a matchup between the two-time defending champion Miami Heat and the finally health-restored Chicago Bulls.
The question on everyone’s mind heading into this season is, “can anyone stop the Miami Heat from winning a third straight NBA title?” There are a couple of different teams that might threaten the Heat’s chances at a third straight title.
The first two threats to the Heat can be seen in the Western Conference. First is the Los Angeles Clippers. The Clippers have been getting better every year and pressing for the title in the Western Conference. With the addition of a couple of solid 3-point shooters and Doc Rivers as head coach, the Clippers should be a team to look out for.
The next team of course is the team that fell just short in the NBA championship against the Heat this past year, the San Antonio Spurs. While it is true that the Spurs are aging, it doesn’t seem to be slowing down Tony Parker or Manu Ginobli. Besides, as long as Gregg Popovich is the head coach, you can never fully count out the Spurs.
Moving over to the Eastern Conference, it would be pretty easy to say that the Chicago Bulls pose a decent threat to the Heat. With a healthy Derrick Rose for the first time in almost two years, the Bulls should be able to close games out better than they did last year and find themselves pushing up at the top of the Eastern Conference.
The other big threat to the Heat in the East would have to be the Indiana Pacers. The Pacers are a young, close knit team that now has a solid amount of playoff experience after pushing the Miami Heat to a 7-game series in the Eastern Conference finals. With that young experience, the Pacers should be a big threat for years to come.
No matter who decides to emerge in the NBA this year, we can be sure we will see some great basketball this year.

Review: Adding up the wasted hours – The Lonely Forest

Adding up the wasted hours
The Lonely Forest
[itunes link=”https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/the-lonely-forest/id264475829?uo=4″ title=”the lonely forest”]
Grade: A
The Lonely Forest, an indie rock band from Anacortes, Washington releases their fourth studio album, Adding up the Wasted Hours on October 15, 2013. The album is a mix of indie rock and the influence of synthesizers to give it a unique sound. The introduction of synthesizers really enhances the sound of each and every song. The Lonely Forest though does not stray to far from from its indie roots. Adding up the Wasted Hours is similar to music from the Bombay Bicycle Club and Vampire Weekend. Every song on the album is a new journey that the listener is taken on. Read the rest of this entry »

Beach Fossils and Kurt Vile at Ottobar
October 29th, 2013 by WLOY Staff
On Sunday, October 27th my travels took me to a local favorite, The Ottobar. The grungy little bar featuring a tiny stage, and an equally small dance floor to match is one of the best venues in the city to see live music, and on Sunday, Beach Fossils and Kurt Vile shared the stage.

Review: Linkin Park – Recharged
October 28th, 2013 by WLOY Staff
Recharged
Linkin Park
[itunes link=”https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/a-light-that-never-comes/id701162375?uo=4″ title=””]
Grade: D
The rock band, Linkin Park released its second remix album, Recharged, on October 29, 2013. The album fell short from the band’s usual numetal sound. It was manufactured, and not as organic as the band’s usual sound. The remix album sounds very dubstep, which usually would be a great thing to add to a rock sound. Read the rest of this entry »

Humming House Review
October 28th, 2013 by WLOY Staff
It’s rare nowadays to hear a folk band that sounds truly authentic and not just like a Mumford and Sons rip-off band. Humming House sticks out among these other folk bands as a rarity. They are talented, entertaining, melodic and above all, authentic. Humming House is a Nashville-based, string quintet consisting of the upright bass, guitar, banjo, ukelele and various other instruments. Perhaps the reason why they sound so authentic is that their sound is a unique blend of American and Irish folk, bluegrass and even soul. Their debut album is a raucous good time that will transport you to a dance hall somewhere deep in the boondocks. For example, it is virtually impossible to listen to their song “Gypsy Django” and not want to clap, dance and sing along. Conversely, “When the Dawn Becomes the Day” is a soft, mellow song that is perfect for laying back, relaxing and enjoying the sheer musical and lyrical talent of Humming House. This quintet is sure to entertain and is a gem in the folk music scene. They are currently on tour so be sure to go on their website to see if they are coming to a city near you.
