SOTW: Childish Gambino – “To Be Hunted”

Song of The Week: Childish Gambino – “To Be Hunted”
Released: May 13, 2024
Rate: 10/10
RIYL: Frank Ocean, TV Girl, Orion Sun, Chappell Roan, Steve Lacy
This past May, Childish Gambino released his 16th studio album, “Atavista,” and it may be one of his best yet. The album includes 11 songs, each bringing their own taste to the table. My favorite and the easy choice of this week’s Song of the Week, “To Be Hunted,” certainty stands out amongst the rest. Gambino builds upon his 70’s synthetic sounds, adding that hint of personality that makes his music as distinguishable as it is.
“To Be Hunted” is the 5th song on the album but takes the trophy to my liking. The quick 1-2 beat is perfect for any function and definitely encourages a strong sense of dignity to any listener. Gambino opens the first 30-seconds with the line “You’re so gorgeous, nothing’s ever really worth your time … but someday soon, you just might find the truth about the world’s design.” To which he amps the title of track “Oh, to be beautiful is to be hunted.” Gambino’s musical literacy is easy and promising as each line hits more than the next. Truly, 10 out of 10 track.
