The End of Snowmageddon?

WLOY’s take on Snowmageddon 2010. Click here for PDF Copy
We here at WLOY tried to resist a snow-related feature story. It was the story that every other news outlet was covering. It was the story that did not need to be covered anyway. Just look out your window. The story itself was doing the covering. But Mother Nature seemed to know that there were a few reporters who were holding out on their snow coverage, so she added a few more inches to the record winters. So WLOY has decided to bring in its perspective. As we are now getting in the groove following spring break, we ask – nay! – we demand, surely, this must be the end of Snowmageddon. (more…)

The War on Plastic Bags
Thursday, June 10th, 2010 by WLOY Staff
The Baltimore City Council introduces a bill to fight plastic bag pollution. Click here for PDF Copy
In the ever-ongoing fight against pollution, plastic bags have been a continual target. Baltimore recently threw its weight behind an anti-plastic bag effort. A bill that was endorsed last week by a committee of the Baltimore City Council would give food stores the choice of offering only plastic bags or encouraging their customers to cut back on or recycle the plastic bags if they continue to use plastics. The specific terms of the bill stipulate that stores and restaurants must enroll in the city’s “plastic bag reduction program.” This program requires that merchants provide plastic bag recycling bins and encourage the use of reusable bags. Violators will face fines of $100 to $1,000 for multiple offenses. (more…)

Check out Woodward’s Auction House on the Avenue in Hampden! Click here for PDF Copy
If you are a member of the Loyola community, there is a good chance that you have trekked a couple of miles south of campus to Hampden or have at least heard of this distinctively Baltimorean neighborhood. Hampden is known particularly for its commercial center on a four-block stretch of West 36th Street known as “The Avenue.” Perhaps you have dined at restaurants such as Café Hon, King’s Pizza and Subs, or the Golden West Café, or browsed around some of the quirky shops like Atomic Books or the True Vine record shop. Tucked in amongst the good eats and the trendy boutiques is another unique find: an auction house, Woodward’s Antique Gallery & Auction House, that is. (more…)

New Arts District in Baltimore?
Thursday, June 10th, 2010 by WLOY Staff
The Baltimore City Council proposes the creation of a third arts district for Baltimore in the city’s west side. Click here for PDF Copy
There is a sentiment among people who truly appreciate the arts in which they believe that an arts district can lead to the revitalization of portions of a city, and some of those people are among the city leaders of Baltimore. Under a proposal endorsed by Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Baltimore’s west side would become the city’s third arts and entertainment district, joining the two others in Station North and Highlandtown. This designation would make the west side a magnet for galleries, theaters, studios, and other arts activities as well as investment opportunities; it would also make certain business and property owners eligible for tax breaks. There are already some artsy locations in the west side, such as the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center (home of the Hippodrome Theatre) and the Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower. (more…)

Dr. Harris Named New Honors Program Director
Thursday, June 10th, 2010 by WLOY Staff
Political Science Professor Dr. Douglas Harris is appointed the new director of Loyola’s Honors Program. Click here for PDF Copy
A common complaint among past and present students of the Honors Program at Loyola has been the lack of integration of the sciences, social sciences, and business in Honors, a primarily humanities-based program. A new iteration of the Honors Program that is meant to be more interdisciplinary beyond the humanities will be implemented within the next few years. (The Honors class of 2015 is scheduled to be the inaugural class for the new Honors Program.) Honors has recently taken another step beyond the humanities with the appointment of its next director. This new director is Dr. Douglas Harris, associate professor of political science, who was named to the position by Dr. Buckley, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. (more…)
