Strangers on a Plane “Wings” Review by Jovial Njinyi
Friday, February 22nd, 2019 by WLOY Staff
Strangers on a Plane – Wings
Released: 2018
Rate: 8.8/10
Review by Jovial Njinyi
Wings by Strangers on a Plane, is a really interesting album that boasts sounds of cool indie pop. You can listen to them now on Spotify. Strangers on a Plane have developed a sound similar to a mix between Billie Eilish and Lana del Rey.
The songs on the album are definitely more on the soft soothing side. Track 10, “Wings”, that shares its title with the album, has a slightly more upbeat tempo than the other songs, with a lot more complex instrumental composition and base in the background. But of all the songs, track 5, “Look At Me”, is my personal favorite — considering it was the song that drew me to review the album in the first place. (more…)

Concert Review: Emarosa at Baltimore Soundstage
Sunday, December 9th, 2018 by WLOY Staff
On Tuesday, November 27th 2018, five bands rolled up to the Baltimore Soundstage in Baltimore, MD to liven up a welcoming crowd. Arlington, the Faim, Devour the Day, Emarosa, and Hands Like Houses made for an interesting line-up for sure.
I’ve found that Soundstage always has amazing opening bands, and Arlington was no exception. In fact, I’m listening to them as I write. Anyways, the show started off with Arlington, a three-member band from southern California. The first thing that I noticed besides their incredibly full sound and high energy performance was that the lead singer, Tyler Benko, sounded like Alex Turner from the Artic Monkeys. Then I realized that this band had the sound that I wish the latest Artic Monkeys album had. Amazing. Arlington was definitely one of the best performances that I’d ever seen. They even played a cover of “Reptilia” by the Stokes, which the bassist Channing Peake took on the vocals. It was Peake’s birthday, and “Reptilia” is one of his favorite songs. I also have to give credit to drummer Grant Whitson. I honestly wish they could have played longer, as I would have loved to hear so much more! Arlington’s sound, stage presence, mastery of instruments, crowd reaction, and style were all around incredible, and I definitely recommend checking them out. (more…)

Hymn For Her at Starbucks 12/6
Monday, December 3rd, 2018 by WLOY Staff
This your last chance to join WLOY for a Coffeehouse Performance, until next semester, and believe me this band may be last, but in no way are they the least. Hymn for Her describes themselves on their Facebook as, “punksy folksy airstreamy country bluesy grassy waynesy lucy take you on a hayride to hellsy,” which in regular English means that they are of fun with a twist of a psychedelic vibe. The duo has been touring all over the world, and we are lucky to have them come to visit at Starbucks this Thursday, December 6th, from 8-10pm. Remember these performances are FREE, which is unthinkable with this caliber of talent. Please come relax with some coffee from Starbucks (who always stays open later for our Thursday performances) and enjoy this music and grab a WLOY Van Cookie while they last.

Red Sammy Live at Starbucks 11/15
Tuesday, November 13th, 2018 by WLOY Staff
Red Sammy has played for us on multiple occasions, including (but of course not limited to) claiming the stage at Honfest. Fortunately, for us, we will be graced with their presence once again performing at a Coffeehouse this Thursday, November 15th, at Starbucks. Interestingly enough, Red Sammy’s band name hits closer to home than meets the eye, coming from Flannery O’Connor’s short story, “A Good Man is Hard to Find” at least I think that is pretty cool. For those not on campus the most recent dormitory on campus was named after Flannery O’Connor. In addition to drawing inspiration for their name from Flannery O’Connor’s books, they also use his, along with Faulkner’s, Hawthorne’s and Poe’s writing as inspiration for their lyrics as well. We hope to see you at Starbucks, and remember, (as always) bring your friends! Red Sammy will be performing from 8-10pm and Starbucks stays open late for these events in case you need some extra energy…

Pressing Strings Concert 10/12 McGuire Hall
Monday, October 8th, 2018 by WLOY Staff
Pressing Strings is one of my favorite bands that we will be having at Loyola this semester. Thursday, October 12th, WLOY will be hosting Pressing Strings for their Thursday night concert in McGuire Hall. The band is made up of Jordan Sokel on guitar and vocal, Nick Welker on bass, and Brandon Bartlett on the drums. Like many of the performers we have hosted, Pressing Strings is a locally grown band coming from the Annapolis- Baltimore area. The reason they are one of my favorite bands that we have is because they are the epitome of the type of sound you would find on the Happy Folk channel on Spotify; their Indie Soul Rock vibes put you right into your happy place. So come to McGuire this Thursday and take a break from all your mid-term studies. We’ll be doing giveaways like tickets and mugs! See you! Remember, like all Thursday night WLOY shows this is FREE!
