AOTW: Yves Tumor – “Praise A Lord…”

Album of the Week: Yves Tumor – “Praise A Lord Who Chews But Which Does Not Consume; (Or Simply, Hot Between World).
Released: March 2023
Rate: 9/10
Yves Tumor’s 5th album, “Praise A Lord”, exceeded my expectations and got a well-deserving rating of 9 out of 10. Yves Tumor is a producer and musician known for their experimental music and is originally from Knoxville, Tennessee. After spending some time in California, they were able to experiment with their sound and develop it into their current sound. Yves Tumor effortlessly intertwines shoegaze and grunge with electronic, also producing their own take on 90’s alt-rock and psychedelic rock. (more…)

AOTW: Charlie – “Precious Metal”

Album of the Week: Charlie – “Precious Metal”
Released: March 1, 2023
Rate: 8/10
RIYL: Slowdive, Duster, Deftones, Smashing Pumpkins
Charlie is a 3-piece band from Tampa, Florida, and “Precious Metal” is their debut album! I discovered it during my weekly music reviews and I ended up adding all the songs to the library. Their sound is reminiscent of 90’s alt-rock and shoegaze, and this compilation of 10 songs sounded perfect together. This album is only 29 minutes long so it is definitely worth giving the whole piece a listen. (more…)

Mark Hopkins – Studio Seizure
Tuesday, April 4th, 2023 by The Professor
We are very excited to have Studio Seizure return with great local guitarist (among other things) Mark Hopkins. Mark has played numerous shows on campus for us (rumor has it he liked one of our posters enough to swipe it). He’s fronted his own bands The Hotel, The Pretty War and is back with the resurrected Tribe of Ben.
Did we mention he’s also got a great interview podcast of his own and is perpetually playing with all manner of guitar pedals. Sit back and enjoy a deeper dive into what makes his musical mind happy, and how Pearl Jam and Dawes are currently battle for #1 in his heart. Studio Seizure returns 7pm Tuesday!

AOTW: Tei Shi – “Bad Premonition”
Monday, April 3rd, 2023 by Liz Kosik
by Anabel Martin Llanusa ’25
Release: 2023
Rate: 8.5/10
RIYL: Caroline Polachek, Jessie Ware, Shyra, U.S. Girls, Cecile Believe
“Bad Premonition” by Tei Shi is such a cool album! I really love the chill vibes that every song gives. Tei Shi is a Colombian-Argentinian singer and songwriter. The melodies within the album transmit a feeling of calmness, while the lyrics talk about issues in love. The album feels like she is narrating the process in which she got over an ex. (more…)

SOTW: LAANDS – “K TOWN”
Monday, April 3rd, 2023 by Liz Kosik
by Amelia Dunat ’25
Song of the Week: LAANDS – “K TOWN”
Released: March 3, 2023
Rate: 9/10
RIYL: Tanukichan, Phantogram, Tame Impala, Grimes, Blood Orange
This is the 4th track from LAANDS album “Music for the Future” which was released early this March. LAANDS was formed by Rania Woodward and Brian Squillace. They began working on this album in the spring of 2021. They were inspired by their surroundings in nature and say they connected with the spiritual world around them in the creation of the track. “K TOWN” fits their typical electronic pop sound, but its catchy beat and fun lyrics stood out to me. Concert Review: Primitive Man, Full of Hell, The Acacia Strain, and Fit for an Autopsy

Concert Review: Primitive Man, Full of Hell, The Acacia Strain, and Fit for an Autopsy
Date: March 31, 2023
WLOY’s current Music Director, Aliyah, went to her first-ever metal concert and it was amazing! “This concert was unlike any concert I have ever been to,” said Aliyah. With an energized crowd and a sold-out show, the audience was filled with anticipation to see four metal bands.
Primitive Man was the first act of the night. Primitive Man is a doom metal band from Denver, Colorado. The band is composed of Ethan Lee McCarthy (who is on vocals and guitar), Jonathan Campos (on bass), and Joe Linden (on drums). Primitive Man filled the room with their funeral doom and black metal elements. The group had an amazing stage presence which energized and captivated the crowd.
Next up was Full of Hell. Full of Hell is a Grindcore metal band from Ocean City, Maryland. I was the most excited to see Full of Hell since they are a local Maryland metal group! The band is composed of Dylan Walker, Spencer Hazard, Dave Bland, and Sam DiGristine. The lead vocalist, Dylan Walker, has a unique sound with his powerful vocals.
Next the longly anticipated, Acacia Strain. I have been waiting to see The Acacia Strain ever since I started listening to heavy metal and they were even the first metalcore band that I listened to! The Acadia Strain is a metalcore/deathcore band from Massachusetts. Current members of the Acacia Strain include Vincent Bennett (vocals), Kevin Boutot (drums), Devin Shidaker (lead guitar), Griffin Landa (bass), and Mike Mulholland (rhythm guitar). The Acacia Strain was my personal favorite of the night. They had amazing vocals and such vibrant energy that you could not resist headbanging.
Lastly, Fit for an Autopsy entered the stage. Fit for an Autopsy is a deathcore band from New Jersey, New Jersey. Current members include Pat Sheridan (guitar, backup vocals), Will Putney (guitar), Josean Orta (drums), Tim Howley (guitar), Joe Badolato (lead vocals), and Peter Spinazola (bass). You can tell that the mood completely shifted when they came out. Concert attendees started to backup to make space for the epic moshpit. Fit for an Autopsy can for sure move a crowd. They performed many songs including my two favorites: “Far From Heaven” and “The Sea of Tragic Beasts.” This night was a loud, energetic night that I will never forget, and my ears will never recover from.
