Friday, September 30th, 2016 by WLOY Staff

They’re back and better than ever! Cecilia Grace, the sister duo, is coming back to Loyola for a Coffeehouse this Thursday, October 6th from 8-10pm. With their beautiful harmonies and amazing covers, this is a show you definitely don’t want to miss!

Cecilia Grace, composed of Cecilia and Tessa Sugarman, are influenced by a little bit of everything: church hymns, pop music, and oldies. They combine all these styles into their own unique voice, which you can hear in their album, ‘The Best Thing’. Although only two girls, Cecilia Grace fills up the room, turning our Starbucks area into a concert hall this week. Check out their weekly covers here and come check them out in person this Thursday!

Metalachi Studio Seizure 9/9/16

Monday, September 19th, 2016 by The Professor

metalachi-outside-wloy How do you explain the brilliant madness that is Metalachi? And, more to the point, who in their right mind would give them control of a radio station?! We did. For 90 minutes the station was seized by a mad mix of heavy metal, mariachi music and George Michael… Yes, seriously. The band stopped by on the second night of their East Coast tour to hang out with our GM Tara and give her a dose of their show. Not only did they select all the music for the show, they even allowed us to play the advance version of their cover of Motorhead’s “Ace of Spades” which will be appearing on their upcoming second album, shockingly titled “Dos”. We will have some video and more photos to follow, but for now, we’re just busy trying to find the N’Sync bobble heads.

Show list:
Baby Got Back- Sir Mix Lot
She Blinded me with Science – Thomas “I live in Baltimore now” Dolby
Careless Whisper – George Michael
Ember City- Mastadon
Remember the Time- Michael Jackson
Have You Ever Loved a Woman- Bryan Adams
Tits- John Paragon (actually we couldn’t play this one for obvious reasons, but they wanted to)
Final Countdown- Europe
Holy Diver- Dio

thumbnail_ladies%20night%20at%20fac

Saturday’s may be for the boys, but Thursdays are for the ladies! Lose the men for the night and come hang out at the FAC with all your female friends. The FAC is having its first ever Ladies’ Night this Thursday, September 22rd from 9-11pm. So grab a couple gals, come work out without all those annoying body-building boys and learn some new skills. There will be self defense classes and wellness demos taught by women for women.

If working out isn’t really your cup of tea, then don’t be discouraged; Ladies’ Night is a night for ALL the girls. Come relax and get a message (shout out to the Women’s Center) or play some cool games for prizes. And the best part? WLOY will be providing music for the event AND giving away free stuff. What’s better than hanging out with the girls and listening to some great female artists? Not much, beside maybe the cool water bottle you’ll get for coming out.

First Coffeehouse of the year: SKRIBE

Tuesday, September 6th, 2016 by The Professor

SkribeWelcome back (or just Welcome for you First Year folks)!  WLOY is kicking off the 2016 Coffeehouse series with a new location and a new artist to the series.  Annapolis-based Skribe will be performing at our NEW LOCATION adjacent to the Starbucks on campus this Thursday 8-10pm.  Starbucks will stay open with extended hours to support the Coffeehouse shows all year, so you can still enjoy a Pumpkin Spice Latte and a cake pop while you enjoy the sweet sounds of Skribe.  We loved the show Skribe put on for us over the summer at our Honfest stage and so we invited him back, along with Gingerwolf, to perform for our kick off Coffeehouse event.  Check out more Skribe tunes on their website, including free downloads.

WLOY Book Thing Donation Tops $10,000!

Friday, June 24th, 2016 by The Professor

Book Thing check handover When we got news of a massive fire at The Book Thing, we knew we had to act to help. This great institution has been getting free books into the hands of the community for more than a decade and has become a critical part of Baltimore. We were able to immediately give them $2,000 from our community fund to help out but it didn’t seem sufficient. Working with the folks at Peabody Heights Brewery, next door to The Book Thing, and the great people at Friends Records, we held a 2-stage fundraising event on May 28th with 19 artists performing throughout the day. Ticket sales, direct donations, donations from the food vendors and the brewery put us at a total of $8,004.00 raised by the event! We are incredibly lucky to be a part of a community that teams up to support itself and could never have done this without their help. Pictured above John Devecka (WLOY), Russell Wattenberg (The Book Thing), Dana Murphy (Friends Records) and Eddie O’Keefe (Peabody Heights Brewery) and absent but VERY responsible for this success is Jimmy MacMillan of Friends Records. A huge thank you to all the amazing bands that jumped on board immediately when asked: DJ Earl Crown, The Milestones, Stacked Like Pancakes, PLRLS, Greasy Hands, Saleem & The Music Lovers, Femi the Drifish & The Out of Water Experience, Wendel Patrick, Eze Jackson, The Boom Bap Society, The Diamond Sea, Brendan Sullivan, Soothsayer, Shinji, DJ Benny Stixx, Maxine, Raindeer, Goblin Mold and Sun Club. The food vendors: Shorty’s Bootleg BBQ, The Green Bowl and Farm to Charm. Donations of raffle items: Maryland Wineries Association, Cafe Hon, Burdock & Bramble, Peabody Heights Brewery, Steve Parke. Thank you ALL for this amazing event and result!
