Coffeehouse 9/27: Nalani & Sarina

Monday, September 24th, 2018 by WLOY Staff

We love a repeat act here at WLOY… and believe me Nalani & Sarina are not strangers to our Thursday night performances. We have had them back for years now, and we just cannot get enough. This Thursday, September 27th, Nalani & Sarina will be playing a Coffeehouse performance next to Starbucks from 8-10pm. The two are an American soul-rock duo, that sing play keyboard, guitar, and ukulele–amongst many other instruments. Originally from New Jersey, they’ve been performing mostly on the east coast, opening for artists such as A Great Big World, Mary Lambert, and Howie Day, as well as, performing at a TEDx event held at Firefly Music Festival in Delaware in 2017. Bring your homework, grab a coffee, and listen to some warm vocals this chilly Thursday night.

Below you can listen to our Studio Seizure with them!

Lavender & Modern Nomad LIVE 9/20

Tuesday, September 18th, 2018 by The Professor

Late Night at McGuire Hall. 8pm-10pm. Be there or be square. WLOY will be hosting Washington DC’s Lavender and Baltimore’s own, Modern Nomad– and I honestly could not think of a better sound combination. If you think of driving in the car with the windows down on a comfortably warm summer’s day and you only had your thoughts and a soundtrack– this concert would be it. Lavender and Modern Nomad’s alt indie vibes will put you into a dream-like trans. Lavender is closer in likeness to the 1975, but with a female vocalist, where Modern Nomad has a more Tame Impala feel to them. Trust me this is not a show you want to miss; hope to see you there.

Max Bent Beatbox & Open Mic 9/13

Monday, September 10th, 2018 by The Professor

This week in Coffeehouse we have the return of master beat boxer Max Bent! As he did last year, Max will perform as well as work with students and teach them to beat box, or provide a beat behind them as they perform. Think of it as an Open Mic with a built in percussionist. Last year Max worked with poets, singers, and players as well as doing his own performance. It was great and everyone wanted him back so… see you Thursday with your ideas and his beats. Want to learn more about Max? Check out his website and learn more!

Mark Hopkins at WLOY Coffeehouse 9/6

Saturday, September 1st, 2018 by WLOY Staff

Post by Lindsey Zapata

I am pleased to announce that Mark Hopkins will be returning to campus to perform for our first Thursday night Coffeehouse at Starbucks! Mark is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist, and though he sometime will appear with the rest of his band, Mark Hopkins & the Pretty War, we will be having him as a solo artist this week. Influenced by some of the greats, such as, Paul McCartney and Jimi Hendrix. Hopkins specializes in rock, pop and soul. As stated by him, one of his biggest interest is “making good music so you can shake your…” well, you can imagine the rest of that sentence.

If you want something to do this Thursday night (September 6th) make sure to stop by Starbucks from 8-10pm. And before you come, you can listen to some of his hits at http://www.markhopkinsmusic.com/. See you there!

Summer Happenings at WLOY (part 1)

Wednesday, July 11th, 2018 by The Professor

There is a lot going on this summer at WLOY. We kicked it off with an amazing Honfest experience (despite the rain) that drew big crowds to our stage and connected great bands with new audiences. While preparing for that we had boxes upon boxes of new stuff arriving. Why? We can’t show you everything but WLOY is going DIGITAL. All of our studios are being upgraded to networked digital audio systems, just like all the top stations in the world use now. We’ll be able to do all sorts of cool new stuff, including more podcasts, remote broadcasts and live band events. We are also building a new live room for all those bands that keep trying to fit in our small studios to perform. More teasers to follow on that front! For now, just check out the resourcefulness of our GM Tara. When confronted with so many boxes she couldn’t use a desk, she turned them into her own private office! Stay tuned to see just what we’re going to take out of all those boxes!

Honfest 2018 – WLOY Stage

Friday, May 25th, 2018 by WLOY Staff

I can’t believe it’s June already – and you know what that means, Honfest! Grab your hairspray, throw on your feather boa, and practice your best Bawlmerese accent to get ready. WLOY is excited to celebrate the 25th year of Honfest with the WLOY Stage again this year. Honfest is Saturday, June 9th, and Sunday, June 10th, 2018, and WLOY will be there all weekend! WLOY is proud to host the WLOY stage and is bringing a great lineup stacked full of local and some of the station’s favorite artists and bands. The WLOY stage will be located on 36th street at the Chestnut street intersection (right across from The Charmery).

This is quite possibly our most diverse lineup yet, so there is something for everyone. We are so excited for this year’s line up, and we hope you are too! See you there!
