Vinylthon 2021 is here!

Thursday, April 15th, 2021 by The Professor

It’s time to celebrate what you can do with some metal presses and 180gm of vinyl. VINYLTHON is here for 2021! We’re celebrating Record Store Day a little early since most colleges are closed in June… with the bonus of 24 hours of nothing but vinyl on the air at WLOY*.

All our friends, community members, alumni and DJs have been putting together shows for you from Ambient to Zydeco, all spun on real records. We’re joining hundreds of other stations around the world and (for the 5th year in a row) earning our Golden Slipmat Award for participating. Last year (thanks COVID) we actually had 2 Vinylthons and we did 24hrs twice! This year we’ve only got one day of all vinyl (so far) but its a good one. Tune in and check out the shows. Note that because of COVID restrictions we are pre-recording our shows to limit in-studio exposure but they’re all being played on vinyl, clicks and all, we promise!

The Spins
Vinyl Spin Sessions w/Paul Random 12am-1am
Vinylthon 2021 Special Show 1am-2am
Classic Rocking Claire Show 2am-3am
Cars, Surf and Guitars 3am-4am
Jon C. Vintage Vinyl Finds 4am-6am
Moldie Oldies Vinyl Hour 6am-7am
Retro Rockin’ (Vinyl) Road Show 7am-9am
Steve Celebrates Friends 1Records 9am-10am
Queen Marge’s Vinyl Exploration 10am-12pm
Retro Eddies 45s Show 12pm-1pm
Xander’s Mighty Soul Party 1pm-2pm
Hip-Hop Revisited with Saleem 2pm-4pm*
Crucial Cuts: Side A 4pm-6pm
Tara’s Double Shot of Vinyl 6pm-8pm
Retro Eddie’s Vinyl Special 8pm-9pm
A College Try Vinyl Hour 9pm-10pm
Crucial Cuts: Side B 10pm-12am
Sunday Skips
Tara’s Vinyl Hour 12am-1am
Crucial Cuts: A New Hope 1am-3am

* Saleems show is not all vinyl this week due to the untimely passing of DMX, it is a celebration of the life and music of DMX instead. We added 2 hours of vinyl shows on at the end of the night to make sure we still hit 24 hours so we could earn our Golden Slipmat for real.

Jonas Carping Interview

Tuesday, November 10th, 2020 by The Professor

By: Aly Martinez, Music Director
I had the pleasure of interviewing Jonas Carping, a folk (or Americana or ?) artist from Sweden about his new album “Strangers.” In the interview we really went in depth on inspiration and the process of making music. Jonas gave great insight on the importance of being true to the music and having everything be as real and raw as possible. We also discussed the importance of family and friends and the way they have shaped his career and music. We also talked about how he has been doing with the pandemic and how that has affected his life and career. Overall we had a very interesting conversation about music and the inspiration behind his work.

Quarantine Takeover – Queen Kyla Vera

Tuesday, October 13th, 2020 by The Professor

This week we’re joined by the amazing Queen Kyla Vera of Metalachi! She’s the rocking metal violin powerhouse soloist you won’t believe unless you see her live. We were lucky to have the monsters of mariachi come by the station once upon a pre-COVID time and had a blast with them all (Check out their Studio Seizure!). Kyla is highlighting some great music this week – all bands and artists that she has performed with (or Metalachi has) including some incredible violinists and some rock legends (Suicidal Tendancies! Lamb of God!) so tune in and check it out. Luckily her crazed kitten Gizmo stopped trying to eat the microphone and resorted to just attacking Kyla so the show could be finished… We can’t wait for Metachi to stomp it’s way back east again from LA soon!!

WLOY gets mention in Radio World Magazine (again)

Thursday, October 1st, 2020 by The Professor

We love it when we get some press, especially in the likes of trade magazine Radio World. Professor Rob Quicke from William Paterson University wrote an article covering college radio station spring reactions and fall preparations for the COVID-19 pandemic in Radio World Magazine. WLOY gets a bit of coverage for both spring and fall and mention of our fantastic Quarantine Takeover show series. Yay us!
