It’s time to show you stuff Loyola! After a 2 year pandemic delay, the Battle of the Bands and Songwriter Skirmish return! For those that haven’t been able to experience the madness in the past, these are 2 big musical competitions to determine which Loyola musicians will be able to perform at the (also finally returning) Loyolapalooza!

This allows everyone from your favorite ukulele player to that budding rapper on your hall to join in and have a shot at stardom. Performers will have approximately 10 minutes to wow the student judges and the audience with their ORIGINAL material in order to win a spot on the stage before the national headliner at Loyolapalooza!

Battle of the Bands (NEW DATE 4/19) is for trio and larger acts and will be judged by a group of past winners and professional artists, managers, record label owners and more from the Baltimore area. Bands will get approximately 15 minutes to perform ORIGINAL material for the judges. Winners will open for the national headliner at Loyolapalooza!

Quarantine Takeover – Lawrence Lanahan

Tuesday, July 13th, 2021 by The Professor

This week’s Quarantine Takeover is by Disappearing Ink’s Lawrence Lanahan celebrating his life in record stores. Lawrence is an accomplished producer of radio, podcasts and music, as well as a teacher, lecturer and author of a fantastic book exploring the racial divides in home buying in Baltimore. But, first and foremost he is a lover of music and records. A devotee of the record store and the value of the experience found therein. Join him on a walk through his history of finding music, new and old, and reveling in the joy of sharing music through the record store. Tune in Tuesday and Thursday at 7pm EST.

Disappering Ink has a new EP out on Bandcamp as well. And you can get Lawrence’s book online or in local shops like The Ivy Bookshop. Do that in person because book stores, like record stores, should be in person experiences…

Quarantine Takeover: Don Muench

Monday, June 21st, 2021 by The Professor

This week we get a takeover show from Chicago. Our guest host is musician and record collector Don Muench who takes a very local dive into his collection of 60s-80s garage rock and blues bands. It’s all about Chicago tonight.

His stories of the local music scene and bands are great. Whether it’s how he met his wife, calling Muddy Waters at home or hiring legendary bluesman JB Hutto and the Hawks to play at his wedding, he’s got a lot of stories 🙂

Tune in Tuesday & Thursday 7-8pm to hear this takeover and explore Don’s great vinyl collection.

Vinylthon 2021 is here!

Thursday, April 15th, 2021 by The Professor

It’s time to celebrate what you can do with some metal presses and 180gm of vinyl. VINYLTHON is here for 2021! We’re celebrating Record Store Day a little early since most colleges are closed in June… with the bonus of 24 hours of nothing but vinyl on the air at WLOY*.

All our friends, community members, alumni and DJs have been putting together shows for you from Ambient to Zydeco, all spun on real records. We’re joining hundreds of other stations around the world and (for the 5th year in a row) earning our Golden Slipmat Award for participating. Last year (thanks COVID) we actually had 2 Vinylthons and we did 24hrs twice! This year we’ve only got one day of all vinyl (so far) but its a good one. Tune in and check out the shows. Note that because of COVID restrictions we are pre-recording our shows to limit in-studio exposure but they’re all being played on vinyl, clicks and all, we promise!

The Spins
Vinyl Spin Sessions w/Paul Random 12am-1am
Vinylthon 2021 Special Show 1am-2am
Classic Rocking Claire Show 2am-3am
Cars, Surf and Guitars 3am-4am
Jon C. Vintage Vinyl Finds 4am-6am
Moldie Oldies Vinyl Hour 6am-7am
Retro Rockin’ (Vinyl) Road Show 7am-9am

Xander’s Mighty Soul Party 1pm-2pm
Hip-Hop Revisited with Saleem 2pm-4pm*
Crucial Cuts: Side A 4pm-6pm
Tara’s Double Shot of Vinyl 6pm-8pm

Crucial Cuts: Side B 10pm-12am
Sunday Skips
Tara’s Vinyl Hour 12am-1am
Crucial Cuts: A New Hope 1am-3am

* Saleems show is not all vinyl this week due to the untimely passing of DMX, it is a celebration of the life and music of DMX instead. We added 2 hours of vinyl shows on at the end of the night to make sure we still hit 24 hours so we could earn our Golden Slipmat for real.
