What Is The WLOY Staff Listening To?
April 24th, 2014 by WLOY Staff
Rachel Stoczko – Hozier – From Eden EP – [itunes link=”https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/arsonists-lullabye/id855326898?uo=4″ title=”Itunes”]
This newly released EP from Irish artist, Hozier, has been on repeat since I discovered it last week. I first heard Hozier on Teen Wolf, judge me, with his work from his first EP, and his second certainly does not disappoint. I cannot stop listening to the hauntingly beautiful tones and intricate lyrics of all four songs off the new EP. Give it a listen and melo out.
Kelly Burchard – ENDLESS FANTASY – Anamanaguchi – [itunes link=”https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/endless-fantasy/id628657245?uo=4″ title=”Itunes”]
What would a record sound like if you duct taped four Game Boy’s together while playing your four favorite games? Answer: Anamanaguchi. Though their most recent album, Endless Fantasy dropped about a year ago, the 8-bit party still rages on. You can genuinely Mega Man dancing provocatively at the heroine from Metroid in each chiptune jam on their 77(!) minute long second studio album, Endless Fantasy. Funded by a $50,000 Kickstarter in just 11 hours, bangers like “Meow,” “John Hughes,” and the title track, “Endless Fantasy,” will show you why people simply NEEDED more of this in their headholes. 1UP!
Kathleen McKeveny – Lazaretto- Jack White – [itunes link=”https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/high-ball-stepper/id855605167?uo=4″ title=”Itunes”]
For someone who delights in the peculiar and 45’s, Jack White’s latest bizarro feat comes as no surprise. From studio to shelf in just over 3 hours, White managed to officially create the World’s Fastest Record.
The word ‘lazaretto’ itself references ships that are permanently anchored, isolated island used as a quarantine station for maritime travelers and lepers alike. Hmmm. Can’t say I’m sure what Jack White is getting at, but I think it’s safe to say that Lazaretto stands alone in its ambitions, executions and worth.
Billy Dries – It’s Album Time – Todd Terje – [itunes link=”https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/delorean-dynamite/id817063554?uo=4″ title=”Itunes”]
So somewhere up in heaven God was like: “hey someone should make a good House record”, then It’s Album Time was born to the virgin Todd Terje. It’s nu-disco beats are perfect for any dance party, or barroom, and they’ll certainly get you on your feet. Check out the music video for “Inspector Norse” (here) and learn how to dance to Todd Terje from the best.
Phil Dayao – Throwback Thursday: Platinum & Gold Collection – Rick Astley – [itunes link=”https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/never-gonna-give-you-up/id255024985?uo=4″ title=”Itunes”]
You can never go wrong with a little 80s music. This album holds some of the greatest songs ever made by the one, the only Rock Astley. Though it’s not the type of music and style most of us usually listen to, it definitely is the type that’ll make get up and wanna say, “I JUST WANNA DANCE!!!”. No I’m not Rick-Rolling you, I’m just saying the man can really make a person jive.
Bob Toner – The Bake Sale – The Cool Kids – [itunes link=”https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/mikey-rocks/id280167688?uo=4″ title=”Itunes”]
WIT A LITTLE BIT OF GOLD AND A PAGER. This album makes me want to do cartwheels on a treadmill for hours. The Bake Sale is a short ten track EP but it was a breakout success for the Myspace rapper/producer team of Mikey Rocks & Chuck Inglish back when Myspace was still a thing. The simplistic production techniques utilized by Chuck Inglish are a head nod to the minimalist mid-1980’s hip hop production that ultimately kick started the genre. I don’t know what else to say because I’m pretty sub par at writing music reviews but this album rocks my socks and makes me feel “cool”, despite all the evidence to the contrary.
