Mikaela Davis is a talented musician who sings, writes songs, and plays multiple instruments, with her harp skills being a standout feature. Her music blends elements of folk, country-rock, and chamber pop to create some pretty textured pop songs. In the early 2010s, she gained attention for covering indie singer/songwriters with her harp, before moving on to create more complex arrangements for her original music. Her first album with a label, “Delivery”, was produced by John Congleton in 2018. Her newest album, “And Southern Star”, is largely self-produced and reflects a mix of modern indie, country, and folk-pop.
In her debut album for Kill Rock Stars in August 2023, Mikaela Davis blended improvised country-rock and folk-rock sounds with her vintage tunes, adding a modern dream pop vibe. Together with her band, she produced the album. Throughout that same year, she played a series of shows in upstate New York, performing her original songs as well as covers of the Grateful Dead. After that, she played at the Pickathon Festival and headlined her own shows, before being an opening act on tour with the Mountain Goats. Super impressive!
Davis’ “Far From You” reflects her image nicely. She definitely recognizes her strong suits, focusing on melancholic lyrics and beats. While this track doesn’t scream folk, Davis creates her own definition. In the process, she produces an essential song for anyone going through the motions of missing another. Kill Rock Stars, for sure, hit the jackpot with Mikaela Davis. She is definitely capable of rising to the top!
