June 4th, 2015 by The Professor

Intrepid WLOY staffers Brandon Newby ’15 and Phil Dayao ’16 tracked down Lightshow while covering the weekend long Sweetlife Festival at Merriweather Post Pavilion May 30/31st. While they were unable to work the audio recorder correctly (head shakes…) they DID get the whole thing on video so there ya go.

Sweetlife 2015 Day 1

June 2nd, 2015 by The Professor

The 2015 Sweetlife Festival May 30/31, 2015 at Merriweather Post Pavilion was 2 days of fantastic music, eclectic foods, and a wonderful atmosphere. We hurled staffers Phil Dayao ’16 and Brandon Newby ’15 into the pit to see what happened. Armed with cameras, recorders and excitement, they hit the show… Brandon’s Day 1 report is below:

Lightshow Sweetlife 2015 Lightshow
After dealing with some parking issues and retrieving our press passes, Phil and I headed to the Treehouse Stage to catch the first act of the day. Unfortunately, through all of this, we were only able to catch the very end of Lightshow’s set. What we were able to see surprised me though. After rounding the corner, I was surprised to hear a live band! More surprised due to the fact that being an up-and-coming hip-hop artist, it’s hard to form a band and have them play your music the way you want it; that usually comes after some time. With this live band and Lightshow’s natural charisma, he put on a great show. He commanded the stage and made everyone present acknowledge him and his set of skills that are sure to take him a long way. Check out our interview with Lightshow too!

Rick Derringer Signed LP

Tim Tilghman, host of WLOY’s Radio RockonTour show got a chance to sit down with Rick Derringer for a lengthy interview following Rick’s show in Annapolis on May 22, 2015. They ran the whole course of Rick’s career from a #1 hit as a 17 year old (“Hang On Sloopy” in 1965) to his current touring and all the interesting steps along that pathway. Rick’s guitar has been on many hits and through many bands including The McCoys, Edgar Winter’s White Trash, The Edgar Winter Group, Johnny Winter, Todd Rundgren, Alice Cooper and Steely Dan. Enjoy!

President’s Cup 2015 All Star Game

May 14th, 2015 by The Professor

The President’s Cup 2015 All Star Game took place April 18th inside Oriole Park at Camden Yards. WLOY’s live play by play team of Justin Thomas ’15, Bobby Trosset ’16 and Brendan Peirce ’17 called the game and even had a sit down chat with Baltimore City Council President Jack Young in between the 3rd and 4th innings. We had a problem with our recording at the startup so you’ll be joining the game already in progress for the second inning. The complete audio is below, enjoy!

The President’s Cup aims to unite Baltimore’s youth by using baseball to bring together groups of high school students from different backgrounds that normally would not compete with one another. Practice began Saturday, April 4 the newly renovated Johns Hopkins baseball field with 25 players on each team composed of both public and private schools. The President’s Cup also represents everything Council President’s ongoing P.L.A.Y. (Productive Lives, Active Youth) campaign stands for. P.L.A.Y. provides Baltimore’s youth with a wide range of opportunities to strengthen their self-confidence, develop leadership skills, learn from positive role models, and be rewarded athletically for their academic achievements. P.L.A.Y. encourages them to thrive academically, socially and emotionally.

Museum Mondays: 17th Annual Kinetic Sculpture Race

April 27th, 2015 by WLOY Staff

Kinetic Sculpture Race What: 17th Annual Kinetic Sculpture Race

Where: American Visionary Art Museum

When: Saturday, May 2nd, 2015// All day (Race kicks off at 10:00 am)

The American Visionary Art Museum is holding its 17th Annual Kinetic Sculpture Race this Saturday, May 2nd. If you haven’t been to the Kinetic Sculpture Race before, don’t know what a Kinetic Sculpture is, or maybe don’t even know what kinetic means, now is your chance to get in on the action and find out! These creative, functional, human-run sculptures are beautifully made to conquer 15 miles of rocky roads, massive mud-pits, the depths of “quick” sand, and treacherous water crossings! Some sculptures are small, simple, and questionably safe, while others can be over 50-feet long, aesthetically phenomenal, and build by lunatic engineers who are hungry for victory in their beautiful moving sculptures. All of the sculptures are 100% human-built and human-powered works of art. Get a great view of the race from various places around the city; to name just a few: Atop Federal Hill, the Korean War Memorial Park in Canton, and Patterson Park. No matter where you are Baltimore, you won’t want to miss this crazy, kooky, Kinetic Sculpture Race. Find out more about the race and the American Visionary Art Museum here!
