Men’s Soccer Clinches 2nd-straight Patriot League Season Title

November 1st, 2018 by WLOY Staff

The Loyola men’s soccer squad claimed its second straight Patriot League regular season title on Sunday and will host the upcoming Championships for the second-straight season as well. After their results from this weekend’s Patriot League play, the Greyhounds increased their point total to 19, further distancing themselves from second-place Lehigh (15) and third-place Colgate (14) with one game remaining. The Hounds will host the 2018 Patriot League Tournament at Ridley Athletic Complex. The team (11-3-1 overall, 6-1-1 Patriot League) will play in a 4 p.m semifinal on Friday, November 9th. The second semifinal will be at 7 p.m. The winners of the two semifinals will meet on Sunday, November 11th at 2 p.m. for the chance to raise the Patriot League title, and receive a bid to the NCAA Championships. The Greyhounds are currently on a six-game win streak as they head into the final week of the regular season. The team travels to Lafayette on Saturday to close out its season. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

October 29th, 2018 by WLOY Staff

Skribe has graced the WLOY stage on multiple occasions and we could not be more ecstatic to have him back. Originally from Annapolis, MD, Skribe enjoys traveling around spreading not only his love for music, but also his own garage folk vibes himself. He not only sings, but also plays guitar, canjo-zookie, electric kazoo, baritone guitar, kick drum, and hat drum. Go check him out on Spotify, Youtube, or at his own website https://www.skibestudio.com.

Come to Starbucks this Thursday from 8-10pm, and enjoy some soft tunes to distress from the past Halloweek!

Rocky Horror Picture Show on the Quad 10/25

October 22nd, 2018 by WLOY Staff

“Let’s do the time-warp again…” and again and again. It’s that time of year for WLOY, where we get a little more wacky, a little more thrilling, a little more spoopy. For WLOY Halloween means watching Rocky Horror Picture Show on the quad with some friends in costumes. So, if you want to join in on the fun, come this Thursday, October 25th, from 8-10pm; not only will we be playing the movie, but we will also be doing giveaways for the best costumes! Also, for those who don’t know much about the film (please come) it is a cult-classic and is a musical that parodies science-fiction and B list horror movies. If that sounds wild, well it should. That aside, it is the most accurate way to describe the movie. Happy Halloween and we will see you Thursday!

Pressing Strings Concert 10/12 McGuire Hall

October 8th, 2018 by WLOY Staff

Pressing Strings is one of my favorite bands that we will be having at Loyola this semester. Thursday, October 12th, WLOY will be hosting Pressing Strings for their Thursday night concert in McGuire Hall. The band is made up of Jordan Sokel on guitar and vocal, Nick Welker on bass, and Brandon Bartlett on the drums. Like many of the performers we have hosted, Pressing Strings is a locally grown band coming from the Annapolis- Baltimore area. The reason they are one of my favorite bands that we have is because they are the epitome of the type of sound you would find on the Happy Folk channel on Spotify; their Indie Soul Rock vibes put you right into your happy place. So come to McGuire this Thursday and take a break from all your mid-term studies. We’ll be doing giveaways like tickets and mugs! See you! Remember, like all Thursday night WLOY shows this is FREE!

Mike Mains & The Branches Interview

October 8th, 2018 by The Professor

On Monday October 8, Emma caught Mike Mains on the phone for a few minutes between DC and Philly shows. She managed not to mention Mac DeMarco even once. Mike discussed his newest single and the new album When We Were In Love due later this year.

Mike Mains & The Branches first entered the national music scene with the release of their debut album Home, released in 2012. While touring Home, founding members Mike and Shannon fell in love and got married. Mike and Shannon began writing their second album, which they crowdfunded without the support of a record label, in 2013. Matt Hoopes, of Relient K, would produce the finished album, with Zach Farro of Paramore, playing drums. They the finished Calm Down Everything’s Fine and released the album in 2014. The album hit the top 20 ranks on Billboard’s New Artist Albums Chart.

The Professor was lucky enough to snag a few minutes on the phone with the amazing Shemekia Copeland, on October 2, just before her shows in DC and Columbia. Coffeehouse 9/27: Nalani & Sarina

September 24th, 2018 by WLOY Staff

We love a repeat act here at WLOY… and believe me Nalani & Sarina are not strangers to our Thursday night performances. We have had them back for years now, and we just cannot get enough. This Thursday, September 27th, Nalani & Sarina will be playing a Coffeehouse performance next to Starbucks from 8-10pm. The two are an American soul-rock duo, that sing play keyboard, guitar, and ukulele–amongst many other instruments. Originally from New Jersey, they’ve been performing mostly on the east coast, opening for artists such as A Great Big World, Mary Lambert, and Howie Day, as well as, performing at a TEDx event held at Firefly Music Festival in Delaware in 2017. Bring your homework, grab a coffee, and listen to some warm vocals this chilly Thursday night.

Below you can listen to our Studio Seizure with them!
