Concert Review: Emarosa at Baltimore Soundstage

December 9th, 2018 by WLOY Staff

On Tuesday, November 27th 2018, five bands rolled up to the Baltimore Soundstage in Baltimore, MD to liven up a welcoming crowd. Arlington, the Faim, Devour the Day, Emarosa, and Hands Like Houses made for an interesting line-up for sure.

I’ve found that Soundstage always has amazing opening bands, and Arlington was no exception. In fact, I’m listening to them as I write. Anyways, the show started off with Arlington, a three-member band from southern California. The first thing that I noticed besides their incredibly full sound and high energy performance was that the lead singer, Tyler Benko, sounded like Alex Turner from the Artic Monkeys. Then I realized that this band had the sound that I wish the latest Artic Monkeys album had. Amazing. Arlington was definitely one of the best performances that I’d ever seen. They even played a cover of “Reptilia” by the Stokes, which the bassist Channing Peake took on the vocals. It was Peake’s birthday, and “Reptilia” is one of his favorite songs. I also have to give credit to drummer Grant Whitson. I honestly wish they could have played longer, as I would have loved to hear so much more! Arlington’s sound, stage presence, mastery of instruments, crowd reaction, and style were all around incredible, and I definitely recommend checking them out. Read the rest of this entry »

Hymn For Her at Starbucks 12/6

December 3rd, 2018 by WLOY Staff

This your last chance to join WLOY for a Coffeehouse Performance, until next semester, and believe me this band may be last, but in no way are they the least. Hymn for Her describes themselves on their Facebook as, “punksy folksy airstreamy country bluesy grassy waynesy lucy take you on a hayride to hellsy,” which in regular English means that they are of fun with a twist of a psychedelic vibe. The duo has been touring all over the world, and we are lucky to have them come to visit at Starbucks this Thursday, December 6th, from 8-10pm. Remember these performances are FREE, which is unthinkable with this caliber of talent. Please come relax with some coffee from Starbucks (who always stays open later for our Thursday performances) and enjoy this music and grab a WLOY Van Cookie while they last.

Out of Water eXperience–Thursday, Nov 29

November 28th, 2018 by WLOY Staff

If you have not seen The Out of Water eXperience once save the date–Thursday, Nov 29th. Femi the Drifish along with the other musicians that make of The Out of Water eXperience will be taking on McGuire, and giving to Loyola a little something we have been missing all along. As a Rage Against the Machine and Kendrick Lamar hybrid, The Out of Water eXperience offers WLOY something a little than what we typically have on stage. One of my favorite aspects of this group is that they do not hold back with their music, playing more light-hearted tunes to making important statements about social justice. If you want to have a spunkier Thursday night, come to McGuire with some friends and come to listen to The Out of Water eXperience.

Red Sammy Live at Starbucks 11/15

November 13th, 2018 by WLOY Staff

Red Sammy has played for us on multiple occasions, including (but of course not limited to) claiming the stage at Honfest. Fortunately, for us, we will be graced with their presence once again performing at a Coffeehouse this Thursday, November 15th, at Starbucks. Interestingly enough, Red Sammy’s band name hits closer to home than meets the eye, coming from Flannery O’Connor’s short story, “A Good Man is Hard to Find” at least I think that is pretty cool. For those not on campus the most recent dormitory on campus was named after Flannery O’Connor. In addition to drawing inspiration for their name from Flannery O’Connor’s books, they also use his, along with Faulkner’s, Hawthorne’s and Poe’s writing as inspiration for their lyrics as well. We hope to see you at Starbucks, and remember, (as always) bring your friends! Red Sammy will be performing from 8-10pm and Starbucks stays open late for these events in case you need some extra energy…

After The Whistle: Loyola Men’s Soccer vs. Army

November 13th, 2018 by WLOY Staff

On Friday, November 10th, the top-seeded Loyola Greyhounds men’s soccer team faced off against fifth-seed Army West Point in the Patriot League Championships. Kyle Wenning and Stefan Joyce, hosts of the After the Whistle sports show on WLOY, were at Ridley Athletic Complex to provide some commentary on the game and get fan reactions during the action. Although the Greyhounds didn’t come away with the win, Kyle and Stefan still had a memorable time on a rainy Friday night cheering on the Hounds.

Don’t forget to tune into After the Whistle with Stefan, Kyle, and Austin on Mondays from 12-1 p.m and Fridays from 2-3 p.m!

The Mayor’s Christmas Parade – Gallery

November 5th, 2018 by The Professor

WLOY has been a part of the Mayor’s Annual Christmas Parade in Hampden since 2010 when we were invited to enter. We naturally assumed this meant we needed a float so we built one. Unlike all the other media that entered the parade with their generic vans, we got a bit serious… We have lots of photos from the various years but below are links to the official ones on the parade’s website. Perhaps the best result was when the parade was up for US Today’s 10 Best Holiday Parades in the US award. The featured image used worldwide was our very own float with Hillary tossing out fuzzy snowballs to the kids lining the sidewalks. We were pretty overwhelmed to see that as the photo used as it was a complete surprise! The parade is every year on the first Sunday in December at 1pm and runs from Falls Rd & Cold Spring Lane along Falls Road South to 38th Street where it turns East and runs to Chestnut, turning North and ending. Join the fun (and 20,000 friends) and say hi to WLOY. Who knows what this year’s theme will be?? Read on for the image gallery! Read the rest of this entry »
