Listen / Watch WLOY Now on CH 35

September 1st, 2010 by WLOY Staff

NOTE: This announcement only applies to Loyola students living on the Evergreen campus. This does NOT apply to people living in the Baltimore area.

If you haven’t noticed already, the TV channels in your dorm room have changed! There have been a bunch of great new additions made to the channel lineup over the summer, however you need a TV with a digital tuner to see all of them.

We have moved from Channel 50 to Channel 35. Some of you are wondering, why does a radio station have a TV channel? The answer is BECAUSE WE CAN! You can tune into WLOY on your TV and watch the pretty picture slideshow on your screen. You can also listen to us as the music bed to the new channel guide on Channel 3.

More information about the TV upgrades on campus can be found at Technology Services.

Fitz and The Tantrums

August 31st, 2010 by WLOY Staff

For some bands, it takes a lifetime to build this success, but few performers deliver an unrestrained blast of soul-clapping, get-down-on-the-floor, moneymaker shakers like Fitz and the Tantrums. Fitz and the Tantrums have resurrected a sound that’s been dormant for decades: the blues of a 1970’s love affair. It all started with a neglected vintage organ, and since then they’ve been keepin’ it real like it’s 1969. The organ became a driving force for the front man, Fitz, and helped him to find his voice. When his ex-girlfriend called him about the old organ, he knew exactly what to write about. It inspired him to compose the breakup song, “Pickin’ Up the Pieces,” which is also the title of the album.

The Love Leighs

Interviewed by: Karyn Oliver

Mobtown Couch host, Karyn Oliver managed to get the Austin, Texas based band, The Love Leighs into WLOY Studios on 8/19/10 for an interview and performance. The Love Leighs combine the songwriting styles and ukulele strums of Raina Leigh and Jessica Leigh with the side-man stardom of Jimmie Dreams to bring you the twisted, delightful, dark and dazzling jazz, blues and twang you’ve always longed for.

Save Student Station KTRU

August 19th, 2010 by The Professor

Yesterday the University of Houston approved a deal to buy the non-commercial, student-staffed 50,000 watt KTRU-FM from Rice University. The trouble is, no one mentioned it to KTRU! Rice University apparently decided to sell the station for between $9-10 million dollars to U of H without any public discussion. The deal will effectively kill independent radio in the Houston market, end 40 years of Rice student radio and add another NPR affiliate to the market. Rice has had major losses in it’s endowment in the past year, but the explanation given is that the money will fund new programs. Perhaps the most amazing thing is the statement from their PR office claiming that “the students aren’t losing anything” since they will move to the internet?! Ok, we at WLOY will happily trade our internet stream for your 50,000 watt FM signal ANY DAY. Please call 🙂

Want to find out more? Savektru.org is one of the many sites set up to support cancellation of the deal. KTRU was threatened with shutdown in 2000 and raised enough noise from the community and alumni to bring them back from the brink then.

Lollapalooza 2010

August 16th, 2010 by WLOY Staff

With 240,000 people, 130 bands, on 110 acres of the beautiful Grant Park, Lollapalooza saw its 19th year as a festival as an overwhelming success for the Austin based promoters C3. Perry Ferrell’s traveling festival is a distant afterthought. Instead we’ve become accustomed to the three-day event and are finally getting used to it as a mainstay Chicago event every August.

Arcade Fire: “The Suburbs”

August 10th, 2010 by WLOY Staff

Arcade Fire WLOYIf Funeral was the personal homage to life, love, and loss and Neon Bible was a straight shot at the gut of political immoral corruption, than Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs is merely a simple acknowledgment of the two concepts along with the reluctant but powerful realization that “we can’t run from our upbringing” especially when two story brick houses and shopping malls stand in our way. And as Win Butler and company convey on their third album, each new generation is engulfed in a more brutal “suburban war.” With so much indie cred on the line, Arcade Fire delivers once again with their longest most expansive album yet. Interpol & Twin Tigers Concert

August 5th, 2010 by WLOY Staff

I was first introduced to Interpol in 2004 when I heard their album, Antics. I became fond of the band after listening to the album, but I admit I lost faith in them after Our Love to Admire (2007) received less praise than Antics. However, I think I need to revisit the album, now that I found a new appreciation for Interpol. I had always heard great things about Interpol’s live show, but it was difficult to ignore all the hype and avoid preconceived notions. I expected a great show and that is exactly what I got. Their sound filled the venue, reinforced by a brilliant light show. What impressed me was the balance between the vocals and instrument sound levels. The lyrics were clearly distinguishable over the rest of the band, not to mention that Paul Bank’s voice was perfect.

August 1st, 2010 by The Professor

JR (Originally aired Aug. 1, 2010)

After more than 20 years of living on he streets, JR speaks to us from his home. He gives this advice to you: “Get all the education you can, soak it up…. do it for yourself, not for anybody else…” and talks about how he survived sleeping in the alleyways for so long. He also plays a few notes on his guitar, as music “soothes the soul.”
