August 8th, 2013 by WLOY Staff

TheMarchSunday, August 25, 2013 from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Enon Baptist Church – 601 N. Schroeder Street

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, THE MARCH: A Civil Rights Opera Project will be holding a free mass meeting performance called Prelude to a Dream on August 25th at the Enon Baptist Church. Prelude to a Dream is a dramatization of the tension and uncertainty during the final preparations for the march and the stories of ordinary Americans who planned to attend the march. THE MARCH: A Civil Rights Opera Project explores the personal and political circumstances surrounding the 1963 March on Washington, and will be premiering in full in the Fall of 2014. Until the project is completely developed, however, creator Alan Marshall has been producing theatrical based “mass meetings” which display certain episodes around the civil rights movement during the Summer of 1963. These performances include freedom songs , speeches, testimonies, and character driven drama, all happening around the audience. After the mass meeting performance, there will also be a preview of the grand finale of THE MARCH: A Civil Rights Opera. This scene, set at the Lincoln Memorial, includes several opera singers portraying characters who delivered speeches at the 1963 march including A. Philip Randolph, John Lewis, Martin Luther King Jr. and Roy Wilkins. This event definitely will be very informative and beautiful.

The towers current exhibit includes a sound and light show, and a video on the production of shot. Admission is $5 for adults; $4 for children, seniors 65 and up, students, and military; and free for children 6 and under.
