by Liz Kosik ’25

WLOY presents “The Encore,” where we spotlight our favorite artists that have visited the station. This week: Skribe

Skribe, is a self-proclaimed garage folk artist from Baltimore, MD. His music range matches that of his personality — eccentric, yet down to earth. Skribe’s and artistic output began in 2009 with his 14-track album, “Doin’ The Dirt.” With that, he has released two others, “Postcards” and “Less is More,” both offering a distinct contribution to his discography. Since then, his music journey has aged into fine wine, gathering and developing his sound and style. His newest track, “Miracles of Alchemy” confirms Skribe’s knowledge of who he is, but definitely shows his versality. Read the rest of this entry »

Song of The Week: The Courettes – “California”

Released: June 4, 2024

Rate: 7/5/10

RIYL: Miranda and the Beat, The Woggles, Kate Clover

The Courettes, a dynamic rock duo from Denmark, blend vintage garage rock and modern punk influences to create a unique sound. Formed by Brazilian singer-guitarist Flavia Couri and Danish drummer Martin Couri, the band is known for their powerful performances and retro-inspired tunes. With a knack for delivering energy and grit, The Courettes have garnered a dedicated fanbase across Europe and beyond, including our very own WLOY station. The duo dropped by WLOY in September 2023 to promote their original vinyl release, “Boom! Dynamite.” We were able to chat with the pair about their upcoming plans, such as some performances in the Baltimore and DC area. Now, they’re out with their newest single, “California.”

The Courettes have cultivated such an original sound, creating a distinct and recognizable style. Their retro-inspired theme distinguishes them from contemporary artists, adding a unique personality that truly makes them stand out. “California” follows a similar production and resonates with their style, however, does not hide or get lost in their more recognizable tracks. “California” stands on its own and adds aura to their discography. Definitely check it out!

Find The Courettes 2023 WLOY interview here! Also, don’t miss the duo’s U.S. return this August at Metro Baltimore. Follow for more details here!

Maryland Deathfest – Sunday, May 26

July 18th, 2024 by Liz Kosik

by Metal by Moonlight

Fred, the drummer from Dismember, told me to meet Matti at the hotel they were staying at to do the interview before they left for Sweden. This was a very big moment for me. I LOVE their first album and the second album is amazing as well. The members of this band have been international superstars in the death metal community for decades, and I was about to sit down with the lead singer. I met Matti in the lobby of the hotel and he led me over to a quiet spot that had a few chairs and a table. While I was setting up the recorder for the interview he offered to get me a coffee. There’s no way I’m gonna turn down a coffee from the lead singer of Dismember, I mean, c’mon.

Maryland Deathfest – Saturday, May 25

July 18th, 2024 by Liz Kosik

by Metal by Moonlight

Saturday I had several interviews lined up which was wildly exciting. I had been studying and researching the bands and artists to be able to ask insightful and thought-provoking questions that hadn’t been asked before. Prior to my interviews, I was able to catch the Avulsed set on the Market Street stage. This live performance has to be one of the greatest live performances I’ve ever seen in my entire life.

Maryland Deathfest – Friday, May 24

July 17th, 2024 by Liz Kosik

by Metal by Moonlight

After an incredible first day at Maryland Deathfest 2024, I was beyond pumped for another day filled to the brim with death metal. The first show I saw was Aura Noir, a Norwegian black/thrash metal band formed back in 1993. The band members had so much passion and energy during their set, and the crowd was definitely feeling it. Even though it was early in the day, they still had people crowd-surfing for most of the set. The music itself had a lot of nice, heavy breakdowns and some solid shredding.

Maryland Deathfest – Thursday, May 23

July 17th, 2024 by Liz Kosik

by Metal by Moonlight

I have been a lover of Death Metal and all metal for a very long time. I had never been to an all-metal festival let alone one of the biggest Death Metal music festivals around the world. This was the experience of a lifetime and I’m so thankful for all of those who helped make this possible. I first arrived on Thursday evening and had no idea what to expect, I’d been to other music festivals but I knew this one was going to be quite different. Even just driving through Baltimore there were so many people in metal shirts and denim jackets covered with patches, I felt like I was meant to be here, among my people.
