Friday, November 15th, 2013 by WLOY Staff

91520177958567Loyola soccer is officially through one full season as part of the Patriot League, and changes are already in order. Both the men’s soccer coach, Mark Mettrick, and women’s soccer coach, Katherine Remy Vettori, will not have their contracts renewed and will not be back at Loyola next year.

The men finished the 2013 season with a conference record of 2-6-1 and an overall record of 7-8-2. The women were about the same in terms of conference play, going 1-6-2 in conference play, but struggled outside the conference as well, going 2-11-4 overall. (more…)

NFL Division Breakdown

Tuesday, November 12th, 2013 by WLOY Staff

NFL-Season-Opening-ScheduleThis NFL season is shaping up to be one of those “down-to-the-wire” style seasons. Basically, if you were to ask any expert as to who will win each division they would answer with something to the tune of “who knows!”

With the hope of putting some things into perspective for the second half of the NFL season, I figured I’d give you my division-by-division breakdown. Keep in mind these are all just opinions and speculation. Take none of it to heart! (more…)

Where Do You Draw The Line?

Friday, November 8th, 2013 by WLOY Staff

UnknownIn the past week, the situation regarding Jonathan Martin, Richie Incognito, and the Miami Dolphins organization has gone from bad to…just plain weird.

The report came out earlier this week that Dolphins’ offensive lineman, Richie Incognito, had been harassing teammate Jonathan Martin with racist, overtly offensive, and threatening comments. The voicemail read as follows:

“Hey, wassup, you half (racial slur) piece of (expletive). I saw you on Twitter, you been training 10 weeks. I’ll (expletive) in your (expletive) mouth. I’m gonna slap your (expletive) mouth, I’m gonna slap your real mother across the face (laughter). (Expletive) you, you’re still a rookie. I’ll kill you.”

NBA Basketball Starts Up Again

Tuesday, October 29th, 2013 by WLOY Staff

It’s that time of year again. NBA basketball is finally back in season starting tonight with a matchup between the two-time defending champion Miami Heat and the finally health-restored Chicago Bulls.

The question on everyone’s mind heading into this season is, “can anyone stop the Miami Heat from winning a third straight NBA title?” There are a couple of different teams that might threaten the Heat’s chances at a third straight title.

The first two threats to the Heat can be seen in the Western Conference. First is the Los Angeles Clippers. The Clippers have been getting better every year and pressing for the title in the Western Conference. With the addition of a couple of solid 3-point shooters and Doc Rivers as head coach, the Clippers should be a team to look out for.

The next team of course is the team that fell just short in the NBA championship against the Heat this past year, the San Antonio Spurs. While it is true that the Spurs are aging, it doesn’t seem to be slowing down Tony Parker or Manu Ginobli. Besides, as long as Gregg Popovich is the head coach, you can never fully count out the Spurs.

Moving over to the Eastern Conference, it would be pretty easy to say that the Chicago Bulls pose a decent threat to the Heat. With a healthy Derrick Rose for the first time in almost two years, the Bulls should be able to close games out better than they did last year and find themselves pushing up at the top of the Eastern Conference.

The other big threat to the Heat in the East would have to be the Indiana Pacers. The Pacers are a young, close knit team that now has a solid amount of playoff experience after pushing the Miami Heat to a 7-game series in the Eastern Conference finals. With that young experience, the Pacers should be a big threat for years to come.

No matter who decides to emerge in the NBA this year, we can be sure we will see some great basketball this year.

The Fall Classic

Friday, October 25th, 2013 by WLOY Staff

UnknownThe World Series officially kicked off this week, and started with a very interesting opening two games. This year’s World Series sees the feel-good story Boston Red Sox facing the ridiculously experienced St. Louis Cardinals. It’s the series of the Beards vs the Birds.

Strangely enough, this is the first time in a while that the World Series is between the two teams with the best records in their respective conferences. Both teams finished the regular season with a record of 97-65, and the argument can be made that they have been the two best teams in baseball all year. (more…)

The Dark Side Of Sports

Tuesday, October 15th, 2013 by WLOY Staff

imagesThe Houston Texans’ quarterback, Matt Schaub, has started the NFL season on a terrible note by setting the NFL record for most consecutive games with a pick-six with four in a row. The fans of the Texans were rightfully very frustrated with their team’s quarterback, but that was no excuse for what happened on Sunday at Reliant Stadium.

This past Sunday, the Texans took on the Rams at home in Houston. Schaub went down with what looked like a very bad ankle injury, and at that moment, the home-town Texans fans cheered in excitement that Schaub was injured. (more…)
