Fiji mermaids, mummified remains, and varying re-creations of monsters are some of the peculiar items you might find on a strange self-guided tour of Dr. Gloom’s Crypt of Curiosities, located by the backroom of the Protean Book and Record Store. The artifacts are from all over the world and this display also includes reactions of characters from myths and folklore. The original “Crypt of Curiosities” was opened by Dr. Augustus Gloom in 1954. He was a strange man interested in death and bizarre creatures, so his hobbies quickly led him to accumulate a collection of unusual artifacts from all across the US.

Explore Baltimore! Protean Book and Records

What- music and bookstore
When- Tuesday to Sunday, 11am to 6pm
Where- 836 Leadenhall St, Baltimore, MD 21230
This place is more than just a music or book store, it is an experience! Protean Book and Records is the ideal store for anyone who is looking for a vast selection of exceptionally reasonably priced and used books, movies, and records. The store also features an eclectic array of unique items and pop culture memorabilia. This store is a must for anyone searching for a one-of-a-kind book, hard-to-find vinyl, or even a birthday gift. The owners are extremely friendly and sweet so they are more than willing to assist their customers in any way they can.
I very much enjoyed visiting this store and checking out all the books and records, as well as the little museum of weird items in the back of the store, Dr. Gloom’s Crypt of Curiosities, which features mummified and taxidermized creatures. Most of the walls are lined with books and all the records take up room on the floor. Running along the top of the bookcases are little Knick knacks and collectibles. Featured in a display case at the counter are vintage videos, and there is even a little section of the store which sells items for only $2. All the items are highly organized and checking out all of the quirky items and toys is like a blast from the past. Make sure to check out this hidden gem next time you find yourself in Federal Hill!

Battle of the Bands 2022 Winner
Friday, April 22nd, 2022 by Ronnie Gruseck
After a thrilling Tuesday evening following Easter break, with more than 150 students crowding into McGuire Hall, a winner was finally chosen to open Loyolapalooza on May 1st!
Three bands (Panic! in the Fine Arts Department, Folding chairS, and Crown Me King) each competed in fifteen-minute segments, after which area music producers, musicians and radio programmers served as judges and provided their own take on each performance. With booming instruments and a lively crowd throughout the contest, McGuire Hall was jumping with competition and strong energy.
Congratulations to Crown Me King who won the judges vote. The performances were so good that we decided to pick not one, but two winners to perform at Loyolapalooza, where Folding chairS won the audience vote by a slim margin of less than a handful of votes. Folding chairS will perform earlier in the day at Loyolapalooza, along with the 3 winners from Songwriter Skirmish.
WLOY congratulates Crown Me King on winning Battle of the Bands and opening for Two Friends at Loyolapalooza on May 1st!

This electronic & dance music record store has carefully curated collections, specializing in new and used house music, Baltimore club, ambient, synth-wave/darkwave, industrial/EBM, 80’s r&b, and so much more like rare and classic hip hop. This store is very small and more so like a boutique, but this makes it unique. If you’re looking for very specific dance music, I would check this place out first. The store also sells ceramics, books, t-shirts & more fun knick-knacks.
