Maryland Deathfest – Sunday, May 26
Thursday, July 18th, 2024 by Liz Kosik
Fred, the drummer from Dismember, told me to meet Matti at the hotel they were staying at to do the interview before they left for Sweden. This was a very big moment for me. I LOVE their first album and the second album is amazing as well. The members of this band have been international superstars in the death metal community for decades, and I was about to sit down with the lead singer. I met Matti in the lobby of the hotel and he led me over to a quiet spot that had a few chairs and a table. While I was setting up the recorder for the interview he offered to get me a coffee. There’s no way I’m gonna turn down a coffee from the lead singer of Dismember, I mean, c’mon.

Maryland Deathfest – Saturday, May 25
Thursday, July 18th, 2024 by Liz Kosik
Saturday I had several interviews lined up which was wildly exciting. I had been studying and researching the bands and artists to be able to ask insightful and thought-provoking questions that hadn’t been asked before. Prior to my interviews, I was able to catch the Avulsed set on the Market Street stage. This live performance has to be one of the greatest live performances I’ve ever seen in my entire life.

Maryland Deathfest – Friday, May 24
Wednesday, July 17th, 2024 by Liz Kosik
After an incredible first day at Maryland Deathfest 2024, I was beyond pumped for another day filled to the brim with death metal. The first show I saw was Aura Noir, a Norwegian black/thrash metal band formed back in 1993. The band members had so much passion and energy during their set, and the crowd was definitely feeling it. Even though it was early in the day, they still had people crowd-surfing for most of the set. The music itself had a lot of nice, heavy breakdowns and some solid shredding.

Maryland Deathfest – Thursday, May 23
Wednesday, July 17th, 2024 by Liz Kosik
I have been a lover of Death Metal and all metal for a very long time. I had never been to an all-metal festival let alone one of the biggest Death Metal music festivals around the world. This was the experience of a lifetime and I’m so thankful for all of those who helped make this possible. I first arrived on Thursday evening and had no idea what to expect, I’d been to other music festivals but I knew this one was going to be quite different. Even just driving through Baltimore there were so many people in metal shirts and denim jackets covered with patches, I felt like I was meant to be here, among my people.

AOTW: The Everettes – “Soul Steps”
Wednesday, November 8th, 2023 by Liz Kosik
by Anabel Martin Llanusa ’25
Album of the Week: The Everettes – “Soul Steps”
Released: April 28, 2023
Rate: 7.5/10
RIYL: Amy Winehouse, Stevie Nicks, Aretha Franklin, Sharon Jones
The Everettes blended classic soul and gave this album a modern twist, making “Soul Steps” a unique musical experience. “Soul Steps” is a captivating album whose sound revolves around 70s soul music.
My favorite song on this album is definitely “So Many Ways”. The band could pay tribute to these old soul songs and all their musical influences while keeping their unique touch. Other songs that I enjoyed were “Red Flags” and “Heads Up High.” They have the same vintage style that predominates in the album. However, although the album captures an old soul vibe, the sound gets slightly repetitive. “Soul Steps” by The Everettes is a fantastic and unique modern soul album. The album features beautiful melodies, and amazing vocals, creating a captivating musical experience.
