St Paul & The Broken Bones Live 9/12/15

Wednesday, September 16th, 2015 by The Professor

Words & Photos by Katie Kazmierski ’18

saintpaul_rhl6 Paul Janeway of Saint Paul and the Broken Bones sauntered on stage in box-toed shoes almost more sparkly than the Rams Head lights. As he opened with the first song I knew that he wasn’t going to put on any ordinary old show, what with his incredible voice and an extremely talented band that compliments it.

Closing my eyes, I felt like I was transported back in time to the 60s when soul music was revolutionary. But instead of Otis Redding, opening my eyes I found Paul Janeway, who looks like just a normal guy—not someone you’d expect to have the extraordinarily powerful voice he does. Turns out he was once just that: a normal guy who worked as an Alabama bank teller. Lucky for us, he met current bassist Jesse Phillips (who Rachel interviews here!) in 2012 and together they embarked on a musical journey with the goal of making music that worked with Janeway’s smooth, soulful voice. St. Paul & The Broken Bones Interview

Monday, September 14th, 2015 by The Professor

saintpaul_ramsheadlive Jesse, the bassist for St. Paul & The Broken Bones took some time between shows to chat with Rachel ’16, from the “Kat & Rae In The Middle of the Day” Show.  Although she started off by confusing herself with her co-host Rae had a great time with Jesse and even put him through her infamous lightning round.  St. Paul & The Broken Bones, with opening act Alanna Royale, followed up the interview with a great show at Rams Head Live.  Check out the show review by Katie, posted elsewhere on the WLOY page 🙂

Free Late Night Concert: Wing Dam and Vundabar

Monday, September 14th, 2015 by WLOY Staff

Join us in McGuire Hall, THIS Thursday from 8-10pm for a killer FREE show!  Wing Dam, hailing from Baltimore, and Vundabar, coming all the way from Boston, are perform for free in McGuire Hall on September 17! Both bands possess a beachy, fuzzy, electronic rock sound that is enticing and addicting.

Wing Dam is Sara Autrey, Austin Tally and Abram Sanders, a coed group, possessing a punk 90’s vibe. Check out my personal favorite “House Boat”— this song shifts from beachy to rock throughout—listen before the show!

Vundabar, created by two cool guys, Branden Hagen and Drew McDonald have the classic fuzziness coming through their guitar in songs like “Gawk”. Both of these bands have excellent stage presence, stop by McGuire and enjoy an amazing FREE show with Wing Dam and Vundabar! (more…)

Fortunately, I know the perfect place for you to do this: the 3rd Floor Reading Room in the student center. Come by for WLOY’s, Open Mic Night, the first WLOY event of the school year. Bring your guitars, banjos, or mandolins to perform a cozy set or rock on. Voices are also much appreciated and encouraged; recite your favorite slam poetry or an original song. Sweetlife 2015 Day 1

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2015 by The Professor

The 2015 Sweetlife Festival May 30/31, 2015 at Merriweather Post Pavilion was 2 days of fantastic music, eclectic foods, and a wonderful atmosphere. We hurled staffers Phil Dayao ’16 and Brandon Newby ’15 into the pit to see what happened. Armed with cameras, recorders and excitement, they hit the show… Brandon’s Day 1 report is below:

Lightshow Sweetlife 2015 Lightshow
After dealing with some parking issues and retrieving our press passes, Phil and I headed to the Treehouse Stage to catch the first act of the day. Unfortunately, through all of this, we were only able to catch the very end of Lightshow’s set. What we were able to see surprised me though. After rounding the corner, I was surprised to hear a live band! More surprised due to the fact that being an up-and-coming hip-hop artist, it’s hard to form a band and have them play your music the way you want it; that usually comes after some time. With this live band and Lightshow’s natural charisma, he put on a great show. He commanded the stage and made everyone present acknowledge him and his set of skills that are sure to take him a long way. Check out our interview with Lightshow too!
